Dulux Concrete & Paving works best as a three-stage DIY system: clean the existing surface, use the primer intended for that surface, then apply a suitable decorative or protective finish. The correct route depends first on whether the concrete is bare or sealed, and whether the existing coating is sound, peeling or flaking. Before buying anything, check the surface condition and gradient in Dulux Australia’s project planner. Dulux says its Concrete & Paving products must not be used on slopes greater than 1:8 (7°) because of slip risk. A steeper area needs specialist advice rather than a different coating.

The range is intended for exterior areas such as driveways, garage floors, paths, patios and steps. Dulux describes the products as water-based, tintable to Dulux colours and, for relevant products, slip resistant and durable. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Current labels, product data sheets, safety data sheets and local stockist information should decide the exact products and application method for your project.

What Dulux Concrete & Paving is designed to do
Concrete & Paving is a coordinated coating range rather than one universal paint. Dulux separates it into preparation and finishing stages so the coating can bond to the actual substrate. The range is aimed at rejuvenating and protecting hard exterior surfaces that are structurally sound, including concrete driveways, garage floors, paths, patios and steps.
That distinction matters because a coating cannot repair movement, major cracking, rising damp or a failing old film. The planner asks you to identify both the material and its condition, including whether it is bare, coated, peeling or flaking. Treat that diagnosis as the first job, not as an optional colour-selection exercise.
The three stages
| Stage | Purpose | What determines the product |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1: Clean | Remove dirt, oil, grease and other contamination so the next layer can contact the substrate. | Whether the surface is bare concrete or sealed/previously coated, and how contaminated it is. |
| Stage 2: Prime | Prepare the cleaned surface for the chosen topcoat and promote adhesion. | The substrate type and the existing coating system; Dulux lists separate preparation products for bare and sealed surfaces. |
| Stage 3: Finish | Provide the visible colour, decorative texture, traction or clear protection. | Desired appearance, traffic and slip context, and whether you want to hide or retain the natural look. |
Do not assume that a product listed in the range is suitable for every substrate. Match each product to the directions for the surface you actually have.
Identify the surface before you plan the finish
Bare concrete
Bare concrete has no intact sealer or paint film between the slab and the new coating. It still needs cleaning: curing residues, dust, laitance, oil and embedded grime can prevent adhesion. Dulux provides bare-concrete cleaning/etching and priming products for this route. Use the current label and data sheet to establish the required dilution, dwell time, rinsing and drying conditions; those details are product-specific.

Sealed or previously coated concrete
A sealed surface requires a different preparation path because the existing film is the immediate bonding surface. Dulux’s sealed-surface cleaner is described as the first preparation stage and is formulated to remove stubborn oil and grease. The product page identifies uses that include sealed surfaces and pebble, stone, brick and previously sealed surfaces. It directs users to sweep and pressure-wash the area, then wait until pooled water has disappeared before proceeding. Follow the current label for the complete process and confirm that the existing coating is sound.
Peeling, flaking or doubtful areas
Loose paint or sealer is a failure layer. Coating over it can produce fresh peeling even when the new product is applied correctly. Remove all unsound material and reassess the exposed substrate. If the remaining film is inconsistent, heavily contaminated or unknown, pause and obtain advice from a coating professional or Dulux before choosing a primer. The planner’s condition categories are useful because “sealed” alone does not mean “ready to coat.”
Preparation is part of the coating system
Most exterior coating failures begin before the first topcoat. Oil, dust, chalking, moisture and incompatible old films can defeat an otherwise suitable finish. Work through cleaning and priming as separate decisions rather than substituting a quick hose-down for the specified preparation.
Cleaning workflow for a sealed surface
- Sweep away loose dirt, leaves and aggregate.
- Use the sealed-surface cleaner in the manner stated on its current label, concentrating on oil and grease contamination.
- Pressure-wash the area as directed, protecting adjacent walls, doors, drains and landscaping from contaminated runoff.
- Inspect for remaining glossy patches, loose film, stains or edges that lift. Rework or remove those areas rather than covering them.
- Wait until pooled water has gone and the substrate meets the product’s stated dryness requirements. Do not use visual surface dryness as a substitute for the label’s conditions.
The cleaner page specifically calls out pressure washing and clearing pooled water; the label and product data sheet remain the authority for the full procedure.

Cleaning and preparing bare concrete
Use the bare-concrete cleaner or etch product specified for the system. Remove all residue after treatment and allow the slab to dry as directed. Etching is not a cure for oil contamination, structural defects or a damp slab. If water continues to appear, investigate the moisture source before priming.
Why the primer must match
Dulux separates primers for bare and sealed surfaces because the two substrates present different adhesion conditions. A bare slab may need a primer that keys into mineral concrete; a sealed slab may need one compatible with the existing film. Applying the wrong primer, or skipping it because the surface looks clean, removes a designed layer from the system. Check the exact product name, permitted substrates, coverage, recoat window and weather limits on the current technical information.
Choose the finish by appearance and use
Once preparation is settled, select the finish that matches the visual result and the way people will use the area. The range includes coloured sealers, a decorative aggregate-look coating, a higher-traction option and a clear protective sealer.

| Coloured sealer, matt | A solid, low-sheen colour for a coordinated driveway, path, patio or garage floor. | Dulux describes the coloured sealer as tintable and slip resistant. Confirm the selected colour and current substrate directions. |
| Coloured sealer, satin | A coloured finish with more sheen than matt where that appearance suits the setting. | Sheen changes how texture, marks and light are seen; it does not remove the slope restriction. |
| Crushed Pebble Effect | A decorative, textured appearance when a plain block colour is not the desired result. | The range lists a dedicated roller unit for this effect. Use the specified tool and application method rather than an ordinary roller by assumption. |
| Super Grip | Areas where Dulux positions higher slip resistance and heavier traffic as key considerations. | “Super Grip” positioning is Dulux’s guidance. It is not permission to coat a gradient over 1:8 or 7°. |
| Clear protective sealer | Projects intended to retain more of the underlying natural appearance while adding a protective clear layer. | Check that the existing surface and its colour variation are acceptable before choosing a clear finish. |
Colour and tinting
Dulux says the water-based topcoats can be tinted to a wide range of Dulux colours and provides colour tools and examples on its range material. Confirm the tinting service, available bases and lead time with a stockist before committing to a large area. Test the chosen colour in the actual light and beside adjoining walls or paving; a small sample can reveal how the concrete’s texture changes the appearance.

Traffic and traction
Consider where people walk, whether vehicles turn or brake there, and whether the surface is regularly wet. Dulux positions Super Grip for higher slip resistance and high-traffic contexts, while also describing relevant coloured sealers as slip resistant. These descriptions come from Dulux, not an independent ranking of traction. Product selection cannot compensate for a steep gradient, standing water or poor drainage.
Check the gradient before you buy
Dulux’s project planner sets a maximum gradient of 1:8 or 7° for its Concrete & Paving products and says not to use them above that limit because of slip risk. In ratio terms, 1:8 means one unit of rise over eight units of horizontal distance. The two expressions are the planner’s stated limit; they are not a guarantee that every surface below the limit is safe in every weather condition.
How to make a practical check
- Choose the steepest line that people or vehicles will actually use.
- Measure a known horizontal run and the vertical rise over that run with a level, straightedge or suitable surveying method.
- Calculate rise divided by run and compare it with the 1:8 limit, or measure the angle if you have an inclinometer.
- Include transitions, ramps and local low spots rather than measuring only the middle of the slab.
If the result is steeper than 1:8 (7°), follow the planner’s advice and seek specialist guidance. Do not try to make an excluded slope acceptable by adding a more textured finish.
A complete DIY workflow
- Map the project. Record each area, its material, condition, gradient, drainage and intended traffic. Separate bare, sealed and failing sections.
- Confirm suitability. Check the project planner, current product pages and data sheets for the exact substrate and finish. Stop if the gradient exceeds 1:8 (7°) or if the slab has unresolved structural or moisture problems.
- Repair before coating. Remove loose material and address cracks, failed joints, drainage problems or movement with methods appropriate to the substrate. A decorative coating is not structural repair.
- Clean using the correct route. Use the bare-concrete preparation for a bare slab and the sealed-surface cleaner for a sealed or previously coated surface. Pressure-wash where directed and manage runoff.
- Allow the surface to reach the specified condition. Clear pooled water and observe the label’s drying, temperature and weather requirements. Exterior work should not be scheduled around rain or overnight dew when the product directions prohibit it.
- Prime with the matching product. Apply the primer intended for the substrate, at the stated coverage and recoat interval. Do not mix preparation stages from unrelated systems without confirmation.
- Lay out the finish. Decide where wet edges, joins and colour changes will fall. Have enough material from compatible batches where possible, and use the dedicated roller unit for Crushed Pebble Effect if that is your chosen finish.
- Apply the topcoat exactly as directed. Respect coats, film thickness, application tools, drying and recoat times on the current label. Avoid adding water, texture or additives unless the manufacturer permits it.
- Protect the curing surface. Keep pedestrians, vehicles, furniture and wash water off the area for the period specified by Dulux. Resume use only when the product directions allow it.
Common failure modes and fixes
New coating peels from a clean-looking slab
Likely causes include residual oil, dust, laitance, a glossy old sealer or the wrong primer. Return to the substrate diagnosis, remove failed material, repeat the specified cleaning and use the primer matched to the surface. Do not simply add another topcoat over the loose film.

Patchy colour or visible overlaps
Uneven porosity, inconsistent film thickness, working beyond a wet edge and different substrate repairs can all change the appearance. Plan manageable sections, maintain the stated coverage and keep the application sequence consistent. A tinted finish can still show the concrete’s texture and repairs.
Water remains in hollows
Standing water points to drainage or level issues that coating alone does not solve. Remove pooled water before priming as the sealed-surface instructions require, then decide whether the underlying fall needs repair. Persistent dampness should be investigated before the system is applied.
A high-traffic area feels unsafe
Review the gradient, drainage, contamination and chosen finish. Super Grip may be the range’s option for higher slip-resistance needs, but the 1:8 (7°) exclusion still applies and no coating guarantees safe use in every condition.

Prices, stock and technical documents
The available material does not establish a current price, a cost saving versus hiring a contractor, independent durability results or verified marketplace listings. Treat “affordable” as a project question to calculate locally, including cleaner, primer, finish, tools, repairs and preparation time. A smaller materials bill can be outweighed by correcting a failed coating.
Dulux directs customers to stockists for availability. Before purchase, verify the exact finish, tint base, pack size, regional stock and compatible preparation products. Product pages provide access to product data sheets and safety data sheets; read them alongside the container label, especially for personal protective equipment, ventilation, pressure-washing runoff and disposal.
Use this decision checklist
- Have you identified the substrate as bare, sealed or previously coated?
- Are peeling and flaking areas removed or professionally assessed?
- Have oil, grease, dirt and pooled water been dealt with using the specified preparation product?
- Is the primer matched to the substrate rather than chosen only by colour or convenience?
- Does the finish suit the desired look: matt, satin, decorative pebble effect or clear?
- Does the use case call for the higher-traction option, and is the drainage adequate?
- Is the steepest section at or below 1:8 (7°)?
- Have current labels, data sheets, safety sheets and local stock been checked?
When those questions have clear answers, Dulux Concrete & Paving offers a coherent DIY route from surface preparation to final appearance. The result depends less on choosing a fashionable colour than on correctly identifying the existing surface, completing both preparation stages and refusing unsuitable slopes.
