Yes—painting a tired mantel or fireplace surround with a textured decorative finish can change the room without removing the woodwork. The Architecture & Design feature published on 23 February 2011 highlighted two options: Dulux Design Stone for extra depth and dimension, and Dulux Design Suede for a matte appearance reminiscent of suede. That article was about decorative surfaces, not the inside of a firebox or any surface that becomes hot. Before buying, confirm that the current product, colour and technical instructions suit your substrate and exposure.
What Design Stone and Design Suede are intended to do
Design Stone and Design Suede are effect finishes rather than ordinary smooth wall paints. Their value on a mantel is visual: texture catches and scatters light, so a plain surround can read as more substantial even when its shape has not changed. The 2011 article presented painting as an alternative to removing or replacing a traditional wood mantel when the fireplace looked dull.

Design Stone was described as adding “extra depth and dimension.” Design Suede was described as producing a “stylish matte finish which echoes the look of suede.” The same article said the finishes could hide surface imperfections. That is a qualitative design statement, not a measured performance result or a promise that every crack, dent or uneven repair will disappear. Deep damage still needs repairing and levelling before a decorative coating is applied.
Neither description establishes a heat rating, fire resistance, cleanability rating, coverage figure or service life. Those details must come from the current technical sheet and label for the exact product sold in your country.

Stone or Suede: which look fits your fireplace?
| Option | Documented visual effect | Useful when you want to | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dulux Design Stone | More depth and dimension from a stone-like textured appearance | Give a flat mantel or surround a stronger architectural presence | No verified current heat rating, durability figure, coverage or application time |
| Dulux Design Suede | A stylish matte surface that echoes suede | Reduce visual sheen and create a softer, quieter finish | No verified current heat rating, durability figure, coverage or application time |
Choose by the way light behaves in the room rather than by the product name alone. Stone’s additional visual depth can help a broad, simple mantel look more dimensional. Suede’s low-sheen appearance can suit a contemporary room or a surround where you do not want texture to become the main feature. A sample board viewed beside the hearth, floor and wall colours is safer than judging a small colour chip in a shop.

Colours reported in the original feature
The colour examples quoted by Andrea Lucena-Orr, identified there as Dulux Colour Planning and Communication Manager, were Design Stone “Weathered Rock” and “Rocky Dam,” and Design Suede “Eco Chic” and “Brazilian Bean.” These are historical examples from the 2011 article. Do not assume that the names, formulas or stock remain unchanged; ask Dulux for the current colour card and product code in your market.
Lucena-Orr also said the broader Design range offered many colours for personal taste. That does not mean every colour is available in both effects, so check the current range before designing around a particular swatch.

Check the fireplace before you select a paint system
The most important decision is not Stone versus Suede. It is whether the surface is an appropriate, cool, paintable substrate. The material reviewed here does not establish that either effect paint is suitable inside a working firebox, on a metal insert, on a grate, or on any area that is heated during use. Do not extend a decorative-wall recommendation to those locations.
Separate decorative areas from heated areas
- Treat a mantel, surround or other cool exterior area as a possible decorative-paint project only after checking the current product instructions.
- Keep the coating away from the firebox and other heated components unless the fireplace and paint manufacturers explicitly specify a compatible, temperature-rated system.
- If the surround becomes noticeably warm during normal operation, stop and obtain product-specific advice from the manufacturer or a qualified professional before painting.
Identify the substrate
Wood, plaster, masonry, previously painted surfaces and textured coatings can require different cleaning, filling and priming steps. Look for flaking paint, chalky residue, grease, soot, moisture, movement at joints and loose material. A decorative texture can disguise minor variation, but it cannot make an unstable coating sound. Remove or stabilise anything that is not firmly attached, then follow the current instructions for that substrate.

A Dulux Acrylic Sealer Undercoat datasheet, version 7.0 approved 1 June 2022, describes the undercoat as designed for painting over roughly textured Dulux Design Suede and Design Stone. It is specified for interior use and says not to apply at or below 10°C, or when temperatures may fall below 10°C while it dries. It also directs preparation and painting to conform to AS2311.

That document supports a possible preparation route for a compatible, cool interior surface. It does not prove that the undercoat is mandatory for every fireplace, that it is the current system in every country, or that the decorative topcoat is safe on a heated surround. Check the latest country-specific datasheet and label for both the primer and the effect paint. If the existing surface is not one of the substrates listed, ask Dulux for written compatibility guidance rather than guessing.
Materials and tools for a controlled application
A Nine/The Block feature-wall demonstration lists a practical set of general tools. It is a feature-wall guide, not fireplace-specific directions, so use it as a shopping checklist and let the current paint label determine the actual method.
| Item | Purpose | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Design Stone or Design Suede paint | Decorative textured finish | Confirm current name, colour, pack size and substrate instructions |
| Quality masking tape | Protect adjacent walls, trim and hearth edges | Press edges down after surfaces are clean and dry |
| Paint stirrer | Disperse texture and colour before and during use | Follow the label on stirring frequency and mixing method |
| Drop sheet | Protect floors and hearth surfaces | Secure it so it cannot shift while you work |
| 12 mm medium-nap roller | Apply product over a broad area | The listed size comes from a feature-wall demonstration; the current label takes precedence |
| Roller tray | Load the roller evenly | Keep the tray clean between products |
| 100 mm paint brush | Cut in at edges and handle narrow sections | Use the brush type specified by the product instructions if different |

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
- Confirm the location is cool and eligible. Identify the exact area to be painted and exclude the firebox, insert and any heated component. If the fireplace is used, arrange the work when it can remain completely cold and dry. Resolve any uncertainty about heat exposure before purchasing paint.
- Verify the current product system. Obtain the local product label and technical data for Design Stone or Design Suede, including approved substrates, preparation, drying, recoating and cleaning. Confirm the colour is currently made and that the effect product is intended for the area you identified.
- Make a test panel. Use a piece of the same material, or an inconspicuous section that can be repaired, to check colour, texture, adhesion and the way side lighting reveals imperfections. Let it dry for the full period stated by the manufacturer before judging it.
- Protect the room. Move furnishings, lay the drop sheet and mask the wall, floor, hearth and trim. Remove loose accessories so the tape can follow a clean edge.
- Prepare the surface. Clean according to the label, remove loose or flaking material, fill appropriate defects and allow repairs to dry. Sand or abrade only where the product instructions call for it. A textured finish will not compensate for dampness, grease, soot or a failing previous coating.
- Apply an undercoat only when the system calls for it. If the current instructions specify Dulux Acrylic Sealer Undercoat for your substrate, observe its interior-use limitation and its requirement not to apply at or below 10°C or when drying temperatures may fall below 10°C. Follow AS2311 as directed by the datasheet. Do not infer that this undercoat makes a heated surface suitable.
- Stir and apply the effect paint as labelled. Use the recommended roller, brush, loading method, coat count and drying interval for the current formulation. Textured products can settle; do not improvise with added water or other thinner unless the label expressly permits it.
- Inspect before removing protection. In the lighting in which the fireplace is normally viewed, check for missed edges, heavy overlaps, thin spots and repaired areas that remain visible. Correct only as the product instructions permit, then allow the stated drying and curing time.
- Remove tape and return the room carefully. Pull masking tape as directed, avoid scraping a soft film, and keep the fireplace out of service until every relevant coating has cured according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
How to handle common surface situations
Wood mantel
Wood can move at joints and may carry polish, wax or soot. Cleaning and adhesion testing are especially important. Seal repaired or porous areas only with a primer approved for that wood and the chosen topcoat. If the mantel is close enough to heat that it warms during use, obtain a heat-exposure decision before painting.
Masonry or plaster surround
Mineral surfaces can be porous, dusty or affected by moisture. Establish that the surface is dry and sound, then use the preparation and sealer specified for that substrate. The 2022 undercoat datasheet’s reference to roughly textured Stone and Suede is not a blanket approval for every masonry condition.
Existing textured finish
Do not assume one textured coating can be placed over another. Check whether the existing film is firmly bonded, identify its chemistry if possible and perform the test panel. The undercoat reference is specifically about painting over roughly textured Design Suede and Design Stone; it does not validate unknown textures.

Troubleshooting before you commit to the whole surround
| Symptom | Likely decision point | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Peeling, bubbling or powdery areas | The existing coating or substrate is not sound | Stop, remove or stabilise the defective material and follow the approved preparation system |
| Texture looks patchy in side light | Uneven loading, overlap or an underlying repair is showing | Use the label’s application method on a test panel and correct the substrate before continuing |
| Colour is wrong after drying | Historical colour availability or lighting was assumed | Confirm the current colour card and judge a fully dry sample in the room |
| Coating dries slowly | Temperature, ventilation or humidity may be outside the label’s conditions | Respect the stated environment; for the undercoat, never apply at or below 10°C or when drying temperatures may fall below that level |
| Surface becomes hot in use | The project may exceed the decorative system’s documented exposure | Do not light the fireplace; seek manufacturer or qualified-professional guidance |
What you can and cannot budget from the available information
No reliable price, coverage rate, number of coats, drying schedule for the current topcoat or application-time figure is established here. Pack sizes, formulations, colours and retail prices can vary by country and date. Build a budget only after you have the current product data and a measured area, and allow for preparation materials, primer where required, masking supplies and possible repairs.

A practical decision checklist
- Is the area definitely a cool exterior surface rather than the firebox or a heated component?
- Have you confirmed the current product name, colour and local technical sheet?
- Does the documented substrate match your mantel or surround?
- Have you tested adhesion, texture and colour on a sample before masking the room?
- Are repairs, soot, grease, moisture and loose coatings resolved?
- If using Acrylic Sealer Undercoat, can you maintain its stated interior conditions, including temperatures above 10°C throughout drying?
- Will the finished colour and sheen work with the room’s fixed materials when viewed in both daylight and artificial light?
For a cool, sound, compatible surround, Design Stone is the evidence-supported choice when you want visible depth and dimension; Design Suede is the choice when a matte, suede-like appearance matters more. The 2011 feature makes those distinctions clear, but current availability and heat suitability must be verified before work begins.
