“Dulux Render Effects” is not confirmed by the currently available Dulux Australia pages as a current standalone product name. Dulux Acratex is a broader coating system that includes preparatory renders, acrylic texture coatings and protective membrane or elastomeric topcoats. Several current Acratex textures resemble the finish a specification may call Render Effects, but Coventry Fine, Super Trowel 2mm and AcraSand should not be treated as automatic replacements. Before ordering or applying material, obtain the exact current Dulux product data sheet or project specification.
What Dulux Render Effects may refer to
Architectural specifications sometimes use a finish description, a project nickname or a legacy trade name rather than the exact label printed on a current pail. The available Dulux Australia information confirms the Acratex family, but it does not establish whether Render Effects is a current product, a discontinued name or terminology used only on a particular project. No technical data sheet for that exact name was identified.

That distinction matters because texture coatings that look broadly similar can differ in build, aggregate, application tool, substrate approval, recoat interval and required weatherproofing coat. A product page for one Acratex texture is evidence for that product only. It is not proof that the material can be substituted for a coating named Render Effects.
If the name appears on drawings, a quotation, an older maintenance record or a label, keep the wording in the project file and ask the specifier or Dulux to map it to a current stock code. Request the current product data sheet, safety data sheet, colour information and any project-specific DuSpec specification before purchase.

How Acratex coatings fit together
Dulux presents Acratex as a system rather than a single finish. The range overview separates products into render materials, acrylic textures and membrane or elastomeric topcoats. In a typical specification, those layers have different jobs:
- Substrate and preparation: concrete, masonry, blockwork, render or another approved surface is made sound and suitably prepared.
- Render or levelling layer: where specified, a render establishes the profile and provides a compatible base for the texture.
- Acrylic texture layer: this creates the visible float, scratch-float or granular appearance and contributes build that can hide minor substrate variation.
- Protective topcoat: a membrane or elastomeric coating may be specified to complete the weatherproofing system.
The layers are not interchangeable. A texture product may require a particular primer, base coat or topcoat, and a topcoat selected for a different texture can change appearance or performance. Read the complete system specification instead of selecting a texture by colour alone.
Current Acratex products that illustrate the choices
The following products are documented on current Dulux pages. They are useful reference points when identifying a finish, not confirmed replacements for Render Effects.

These values are product instructions, not independent performance statistics. The different intervals alone show why instructions must not be transferred between products: AcraSand lists a two-hour recoat time, while Coventry Fine and Super Trowel 2mm list 24 hours.
Choose by finish before choosing a product
Float-finish render appearance
Coventry Fine is the relevant documented example when the design calls for a fine, traditional float-finish look. Its page lists trowel, hopper-gun and hawk methods, so the installer and specifier can select a method compatible with the project and approved substrate. The description does not establish that it matches a Render Effects sample or legacy specification.

Scratch-float texture with higher build
Super Trowel 2mm is described as a high-build scratch-float finish. The 2mm designation and the recommended polystyrene-float finish are important identification clues. Dulux lists concrete, masonry, Hebel block, cement render, autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) and bricks as substrates for this product page. Confirm that the actual wall has one of those substrates and meets the current preparation requirements.

AcraSand is the documented 100% acrylic example. It is a mid-build sand texture intended to produce a fine granular appearance, with brush, roller or hopper-gun options. Dulux calls for at least two coats and a minimum 125-micrometre dry film thickness. If the required appearance is a smooth float or pronounced scratch-float, AcraSand is not automatically suitable simply because it is acrylic.
Other named finishes
Dulux Trade’s texture range also lists Coventry, Tuscany, Sienna, Roll On, Super Trowel, Spray On, Sedona and AcraSand. The list demonstrates that the range has several finish and application options; it does not establish that any one of them is a direct Render Effects equivalent. Ask for a sample or approved mock-up when the visual match is critical.
What to verify in the specification
Use the following decision points in this order. They prevent a familiar product name from being substituted for the specified system.
- Write down the exact reference. Record the spelling, product number, colour, texture description and the document revision shown on the plan, quote or label. Include photographs of the label if available.
- Obtain current documents. Ask Dulux or the project specifier for the product data sheet, safety data sheet, Acratex Application Manual and any DuSpec project specification. Dulux’s range information directs specifiers to technical information, samples and stockists.
- Match the visible finish. Decide whether the requirement is fine float, scratch-float, granular sand or another texture. Compare a manufacturer sample or an approved test panel rather than relying on names such as fine or high build.
- Confirm the substrate. Check the wall against the product’s listed substrates and the substrate guide. Super Trowel 2mm, for example, lists concrete, masonry, Hebel block, cement render, AAC and bricks; that list must not be extended to an unlisted surface without written approval.
- Map the complete coating system. Identify preparatory render, primer or base coat, texture coat and protective topcoat. For Super Trowel 2mm, Dulux names Acrashield Advance as the weatherproofing barrier topcoat for optimum weatherability.
- Confirm application and timing. Copy the approved tool, coat count, dry-film requirement and recoat interval from the exact data sheet. Do not use AcraSand’s two-hour interval for a different texture, or a 24-hour interval as permission to recoat another product early.
- Approve a sample area. Have the installer produce a representative panel showing the colour, aggregate, tool marks, joints and topcoat. Obtain written acceptance before covering the full elevation.
Application workflow for a high-build acrylic texture
The exact method belongs to the current product data sheet and project specification. The workflow below organizes the checks an applicator and site supervisor should make; it does not replace those documents.

1. Check the wall and preparation requirements
Confirm that the substrate is one the selected product allows and that project-specific preparation has been completed. Coventry Fine’s page refers users to a DuSpec specification and the Acratex substrate guide. Use those references to resolve repairs, porosity, joints, movement and other preparation questions before texture is delivered. Do not assume that a sound-looking wall is automatically ready for an acrylic high-build coat.
2. Confirm the material and batch
Compare the pail label with the approved product name and revision. Acratex contains multiple textures with different tools and build requirements. Keep the data sheet and safety data sheet on site, and check colour and batch details before opening containers.
3. Select the approved tool and finish technique
Use only the method stated for the chosen product. Coventry Fine lists trowel, hopper gun and hawk. Super Trowel 2mm uses hawk and trowel followed by a polystyrene float. AcraSand lists brush, roller or hopper gun. Tool changes can alter film build and pattern, so an installer should not substitute a roller for a trowel merely to save time.
4. Build the texture to the specified profile
Keep the application consistent across each working section and maintain the approved joint layout. For AcraSand, the published requirement is at least two coats and a minimum 125-micrometre dry film thickness. That numerical requirement belongs to AcraSand; it must not be copied to Coventry Fine, Super Trowel 2mm or an unidentified Render Effects product.

5. Observe the product-specific recoat interval
Allow the stated interval before the next coat or system layer. Dulux lists two hours for AcraSand and 24 hours for both Coventry Fine and Super Trowel 2mm. Actual site conditions and the current data sheet govern whether additional waiting is necessary. Recoating by habit rather than by the selected product’s instruction risks trapping moisture or disturbing the texture.

6. Apply the specified weatherproofing layer
Where the system calls for a membrane or elastomeric topcoat, use the named compatible product and its instructions. Dulux specifically pairs Super Trowel 2mm with Acrashield Advance weatherproofing barrier topcoat for optimum weatherability. Do not infer that the same pairing applies to an unidentified Render Effects product.
7. Inspect before handover
Check the approved sample against the completed work for colour, pattern, coverage, visible roller or trowel marks and transitions at details. Record the product, colour, batch and documents used so future repairs can identify the original system.

Calling a related product a replacement
The most serious error is treating a current Acratex product as Render Effects without confirmation. The names may describe different generations, finishes or system positions. Resolve the identity with Dulux or the specifier first.
Choosing from the finish name alone
Fine, high build and acrylic do not describe the whole system. Compare finish profile, application method, substrate list, coat count, dry-film requirement and topcoat. A granular AcraSand appearance is not equivalent to a float-finish Coventry Fine appearance.
Transferring recoat times
Two hours for AcraSand and 24 hours for Coventry Fine or Super Trowel 2mm are not generic Acratex rules. Put the exact product name beside the interval on the site schedule.

Ignoring the topcoat requirement
A texture layer may not be the complete exterior weathering system. Super Trowel 2mm is documented with Acrashield Advance for optimum weatherability. If the project names a different texture, obtain its own topcoat instruction rather than copying this pairing.
Assuming exterior colour suitability
A separate DuSpec search result for another Acratex product, RenderWall Plus AcraLite High Build, cautions that not all colours are suitable for exterior use and describes a membrane topcoat system. Because that page concerns a different product and could not be opened, those cautions cannot be generalized to Render Effects. Check the exact current colour and exterior-use statement for the selected product.

Dulux Australia’s Acratex range information directs trade users to technical product information, safety data sheets, project specifications, samples and stockists. Those documents are the right route for an unresolved Render Effects reference. Ask the stockist to supply the current data sheet, not just a colour card or a verbal description, and have the project designer approve any proposed substitution in writing.
Availability and naming can vary by market and can change as ranges are revised. A product found in an older specification may no longer be stocked under the same label. Until the current documentation identifies the material, describe the item in the purchase order as “Render Effects — identity to be confirmed” rather than silently selecting a similar-looking texture.
Practical selection checklist
- Exact current product name and code confirmed by Dulux or the project specification.
- Product data sheet, safety data sheet and relevant Acratex Application Manual available to the installer.
- Finish identified as float, scratch-float, granular sand or another documented profile.
- Substrate checked against the selected product’s approved list and preparation guide.
- Application tool and finishing method copied from the selected product’s instructions.
- Coat count, dry-film target and recoat interval recorded for that product only.
- Compatible protective topcoat identified where the system requires one.
- Sample panel approved before full-area work begins.
- Colour and exterior-use suitability confirmed for the exact product and region.
- Batch, colour and final system documents retained for maintenance.
Bottom line for a Render Effects specification
Dulux Acratex offers documented high-build acrylic texture options, but the evidence available does not verify Render Effects as a current standalone product name. Coventry Fine, Super Trowel 2mm and AcraSand demonstrate distinct finishes and instructions: float, scratch-float and granular sand respectively. Select by the approved finish and complete system, then follow the exact current data sheet for substrate, application, recoat timing and topcoat. Until Dulux or the project specifier confirms the identity, none of the related products should be presented as an equivalent.
