Dulux ENVIROSOLUTIONS Waste Paint Hardener is intended for unwanted water-based paint. Dulux Australia says it turns liquid water-based paint into a solid mass that can then be disposed of responsibly. It is not presented as a treatment for oil-based paint. For oil-based leftovers, Dulux describes a separate method using absorbent material and drying. Large quantities should be directed to a participating Paintback collection site, subject to local Australian arrangements.
What Dulux ENVIROSOLUTIONS Waste Paint Hardener does
The product’s purpose is simple: treat leftover water-based paint so the liquid becomes a solid mass. That change makes a small amount of household paint easier to handle for disposal than leaving it as a pourable liquid. Dulux Australia describes the resulting solid as suitable for responsible disposal, but the official guidance does not establish a universal dosage, setting time, pack size or application sequence.

Different containers hold different amounts of paint, and the current product label is the controlling instruction for how much hardener to use, how to mix it, how long to wait and what precautions apply. Do not rely on an online ratio, an old package or a guess based on the colour or thickness of the paint. Read the label on the product you have before opening it.
The hardener is a disposal aid, not a way to make leftover paint usable again. Once paint has been treated, it should not be poured, brushed onto a surface merely to get rid of it, or mixed with another waste stream unless the label and your local disposal service say that is acceptable.

Identify the paint before choosing a disposal method
Paint type determines the route. Check the original can for the manufacturer’s description. If the label does not clearly identify the paint as water-based or oil-based, pause and ask the manufacturer, your council or the disposal service rather than treating an unknown product with hardener.
| Paint situation | Guidance described by Dulux Australia | What to verify locally |
|---|---|---|
| Unwanted water-based paint | Use Dulux ENVIROSOLUTIONS Waste Paint Hardener to turn the liquid into a solid mass, following the current product label. | How your council wants the solid and its container presented for disposal. |
| Unwanted oil-based paint | Put excess paint onto absorbent material such as kitty litter, cardboard or shredded paper, leave it to dry, then dispose of it with normal household waste. | Whether your council has a different household-waste, hazardous-waste or collection requirement. |
| Large quantity of unwanted paint | Use a participating Paintback collection point for unwanted paint and packaging. | Nearest site, accepted materials, opening arrangements and any quantity limits. |
| Can once emptied | Dulux says an emptied can may be placed in household recycling bins. | Whether your local recycling program accepts that type of can and how it must be prepared. |
Do not infer that a method is interchangeable between these rows. In particular, Dulux’s hardener guidance is tied to water-based paint, while its oil-based guidance relies on absorbent material and drying.

This workflow is for a small household remainder that the can or local service identifies as water-based. The exact quantity and waiting period must come from the current package instructions.
- Confirm the paint type. Read the can and make sure it is identified as water-based. If the information is missing or contradictory, do not add the hardener until you have obtained advice.
- Read the complete hardener label. Note the stated amount for your volume of paint, mixing directions, required waiting time, protective measures and disposal instructions. The official Dulux guidance cited here does not provide a single ratio that applies to every use.
- Prepare the work area as the label directs. Keep the paint in a suitable container, protect surrounding surfaces and keep children and animals away. Follow any ventilation, glove or eye-protection advice printed on the product.
- Add and mix the product exactly as specified. Do not estimate by eye, substitute another powder or liquid, or combine the hardener with oil-based paint. Use the label’s sequence and mixing instruction.
- Wait for the stated result. The intended outcome is a solid mass rather than a free-flowing liquid. Do not dispose of the material while it remains pourable, and do not assume it has set merely because the surface looks firm.
- Dispose of the solid according to local instructions. Dulux describes the solidified paint as suitable for responsible disposal. Your council may specify which bin or drop-off service is appropriate, so check that arrangement before placing it out.
- Handle the container separately. If the can is genuinely emptied, Dulux says it can be placed in household recycling bins. Local recycling rules still control acceptance, so follow your council’s preparation requirements.
Keep the product label or a photograph of it until disposal is complete. That record helps resolve questions about the paint type, the amount treated and the required waiting period without guessing later.

What to do with leftover oil-based paint
Do not use the water-based-paint hardener for oil-based paint. Dulux Australia gives a different household method: place excess unwanted oil-based paint onto an absorbent material, including kitty litter, cardboard or shredded paper; leave it to dry; then dispose of it with normal household waste.
- Check that the paint is oil-based. Use the can’s wording or obtain advice if the type is uncertain.
- Choose an absorbent material. Dulux specifically lists kitty litter, cardboard and shredded paper. Use enough material to take up the excess rather than leaving a free liquid pool.
- Allow it to dry. Leave the treated material undisturbed until it is dry. The official guidance does not set a universal drying time; conditions and the amount of paint affect how long this takes.
- Use normal household waste only where that remains your local rule. Dulux describes disposal with normal household waste, but Australian councils can set additional requirements. Check before placing a large, unusually packaged or partly liquid amount in a bin.
This method is for excess household oil-based paint in the circumstances covered by Dulux’s Australian guidance. It is not a reason to pour paint into a sink, toilet, gutter or outdoor drain, and it is not a substitute for a dedicated collection service when the quantity is large.

Why paint must not go down a drain
Dulux Australia states: “Never dispose of unwanted paint by pouring it down household or stormwater drains.” A drain is not a paint-disposal system. Household and stormwater networks can carry material away from the property, where it is outside the controlled handling route intended for waste.
The prohibition applies whether the paint is water-based or oil-based, whether the drain is indoors or outdoors, and whether the amount seems small. Do not rinse a paint-filled brush, roller or container into a drain as a workaround. Instead, follow the relevant solidifying, absorbent-drying or collection route and check your council’s instructions for cleaning tools and containers.

When Paintback is the better option
For a large amount of unwanted paint, Dulux points Australians to Paintback. Dulux describes Paintback as an industry initiative that accepts unwanted paint and packaging at participating collection points around Australia and aims to divert architectural and decorative waste paint from landfill.
Paintback is particularly relevant when the quantity is too large or awkward for a normal household process. Before travelling, confirm the nearest participating site and its current acceptance rules. Collection coverage, operating arrangements and accepted materials can change, and not every site should be assumed to handle every product or quantity.

- Identify whether the paint is water-based or oil-based before contacting the site.
- Estimate how many containers you have and whether any are partly full, solidified or damaged.
- Check the site’s current list of accepted paint and packaging.
- Confirm opening hours, access instructions and any quantity conditions.
- Keep containers closed and transport them in a way that prevents tipping or leakage, following any directions supplied by the collection point.
If no participating site is practical, contact your local council for its household chemical or paint-disposal alternative. Australian disposal arrangements differ by council, so a method accepted in one area may not be accepted in another.
Empty cans, packaging and local recycling rules
Dulux says a can, once emptied, can be placed in household recycling bins. “Emptied” is important: a can containing liquid paint is not the same as an empty metal container. Do not place a partly full can in recycling merely because its lid is closed.

Check your council’s recycling instructions for the can’s material, lid, label and any requirement to separate components. If the can still contains paint, use the route for that paint type or take it to a collection service. Paintback also covers unwanted paint and packaging at participating locations, which may be more suitable than kerbside recycling for a larger set of containers.

Using hardener on the wrong paint
Problem: The paint is oil-based, but the water-based hardener has been added or is being considered. Correction: Stop and separate that material from the intended water-based process. Follow the product label and ask the manufacturer or council how to manage the mixed or uncertain waste; do not assume it will solidify as described for water-based paint.
Guessing the quantity or waiting time
Problem: An internet comment or an old label supplies a ratio or time that is not on your current pack. Correction: Use the current label. The cited Dulux guidance establishes the solidifying purpose, not one universal recipe.
Putting liquid paint in recycling
Problem: A can still contains paint but is placed in the recycling bin. Correction: Keep liquid paint out of kerbside recycling and use the appropriate paint-disposal route. Recycle the can only once it is emptied and your local program accepts it.

Choosing household waste for a large amount
Problem: Several full containers are treated as ordinary bin waste. Correction: Check Paintback first for a participating collection site, then ask your council about alternatives. The quantity is a reason to verify the route, not to pour or abandon the paint.
Assuming every Australian council operates the same way
Problem: Advice from another suburb is followed without checking local rules. Correction: Dulux’s guidance is Australian, but collection coverage and recycling requirements are local and can change. Verify the current arrangement with your council or the named collection service.
A quick decision guide
Use this sequence before handling the leftovers:
- Is the paint clearly water-based? If yes and the quantity is small, read the current Dulux ENVIROSOLUTIONS Waste Paint Hardener label and follow its instructions. If no, continue to the next question.
- Is it clearly oil-based? Use absorbent material such as kitty litter, cardboard or shredded paper, let it dry, and follow the local rule for normal household waste. Do not substitute the water-based hardener.
- Is the amount large, the paint type uncertain, or the packaging difficult to manage? Contact a participating Paintback site or your council before disposal.
- Is the can empty? Check local recycling rules; Dulux says an emptied can may go in household recycling bins.
- At any point, are you considering a drain? Stop. Paint must not be poured into household or stormwater drains.
The safest choice is the one that matches all three variables: paint type, amount and local Australian collection rules. The hardener addresses only the first category when the paint is water-based; it does not replace the label, council guidance or a collection service.
