What the Campbelltown design brief required
The centre’s brief combined a demanding healthcare environment with a visible sustainability ambition. Duracube describes exterior solar shading intended to maximise views while controlling the building’s exposure to sun. Inside, wet areas had to withstand frequent use, moisture and cleaning without creating an onerous maintenance burden.
That combination matters in a cancer-care facility. Toilets, showers, change areas and staff amenities are repeatedly exposed to water, cleaning products, impact and high traffic. A finish that looks appropriate on opening day but swells, delaminates or becomes difficult to clean would work against the operational brief. The project account therefore presents material selection as part of a broader performance strategy rather than a decorative choice.
Erilyan is described as seeking third-party certifications, waste-reduction initiatives and stewardship programs while materials were being selected. Those activities indicate an effort to align procurement and construction with sustainability goals, but the case study does not provide certification numbers, waste tonnage, lifecycle calculations or a verified Green Star score.
Why compact laminate was chosen for wet areas

Durability under repeated use
Partitions, lockers and benches are touched, opened, leaned against and cleaned throughout the day. The selected system had to function as an architectural element and as equipment that users interact with directly. Duracube supplied toilet and shower partitions, engraved lockers with combination locks, shoe-box benches with slat tops, ironing-board cupboards and additional cut-to-size panels. Specifying a coordinated compact-laminate system allowed these different elements to be treated as one fit-out language.

Resistance to moisture
Wet-area partitions and storage sit close to showers, basins and wet clothing. Duracube identifies water resistance as a reason the material suited the brief. The project information does not state a water-absorption value, edge-detail specification, sealant system or installation test, so those details would need to be confirmed in a technical schedule before another project adopted the same approach.
Maintenance considerations
The manufacturer also describes the laminate as easy to maintain. In practice, that claim should be translated into project-specific instructions: approved cleaning chemicals, wiping frequency, treatment of edges and hardware, and procedures for repairing scratches or damaged components. The palette combines concrete and graphite references with timber-inspired decors. Questions a project team should verify
- Which Green Star tool and version governed the target?
- Was a 6-star rating formally certified, and under whose assessment?
- What chain-of-custody, environmental or manufacturing certificates applied to the supplied panels?
- How were offcuts, packaging and replacement parts handled?
- What cleaning products and maintenance intervals were assumed in the operational plan?
How the package fits a cancer-care environment
A cancer-care centre has a different emotional and operational context from a conventional commercial amenities block. Patients may be immunocompromised, fatigued or accompanied by carers; staff need reliable storage and easy-to-clean change facilities; and the building must feel calm rather than institutional. The reported combination of timber-look finishes, concrete and graphite tones could support a less clinical visual character while the compact-laminate systems provide privacy and storage.
That interpretation is a design reading, not a measured patient-outcome claim. The source does not report patient satisfaction, staff feedback, cleaning audits or clinical metrics. Coordinate partitions, storage and seating
The project demonstrates the value of treating partitions, lockers and benches as a coordinated package. Shared dimensions, edge treatments and colours can simplify detailing and reduce visual conflicts between separate trades. Coordination should still define interfaces with plumbing, walls, floors, ventilation and accessibility hardware.

Separate verified properties from marketing language
Terms such as antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, durable and easy to maintain should each be tied to a current technical document or test report. If a property is essential to an approval, put the required evidence, test standard and acceptance threshold in the tender documents rather than relying on a case-study description.

Confirm the sustainability pathway
A Green Star target can influence product choices, but the credit pathway must be checked early. Ask whether the product contributes through materials, responsible procurement, waste, emissions or another category, and retain the documentation needed by the project’s assessor.
Limits of the published evidence
The Campbelltown case study establishes the project identity, design and construction team, reported value, intended Green Star target, Duracube’s supply scope and the manufacturer’s rationale for compact laminate. It does not establish an independent comparison with painted metal, glass, ceramic, timber-based panels or other wet-area systems.
It also does not provide a service-life prediction, maintenance-cost study, infection-control result, embodied-carbon figure, achieved certification record or independent inspection.
