A 23 July 2015 Architecture & Design report describes Duratuff Select vinyl cladding installed on an unidentified Sydney residence. Country Style Cladding installed the Heather-colour weatherboards, and the homeowner chose installation with 30 mm foam for additional wall insulation. The stated goal was an easier, lower-maintenance home—not a documented energy or comfort result.
The project is useful as a case study in what to verify before specifying vinyl cladding. The report does not provide the home’s area, project price, measured energy use, acoustic performance, maintenance records or post-installation durability data. Current product information from Austech adds supplier-described construction, cleaning, colour and warranty details, but those claims should be checked against the written terms and documentation that apply to your project.

What the Sydney project actually documents
The project story is brief, so its strongest value is identifying the material and installation choices rather than proving a measured transformation. The residence and homeowner are not named. The report identifies Duratuff Select vinyl cladding in Heather, Country Style Cladding as the installer, and 30 mm foam selected to add wall insulation.
| Documented item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Publication | Architecture & Design, 23 July 2015 |
| Cladding | Duratuff Select vinyl cladding |
| Colour | Heather |
| Installer named in the report | Country Style Cladding |
| Insulation choice | 30 mm foam, described as additional wall insulation |
| Stated design objective | An easy-living, low-maintenance home |
Those facts support a description of the design intent. They do not support a claim that the home achieved a particular reduction in heating or cooling costs, a measured increase in comfort, less noise, a specific service life or a quantified maintenance saving.

What Duratuff Select is
Austech’s current product page describes Duratuff Select as vinyl wall cladding, also called weatherboards, for construction and renovation work. The page says the panels use a 180 wind-lock system. In the supplier’s description, that system secures the panels while allowing for expansion and contraction. The same page describes solid foam insulation built onto the weatherboards and positions the product as an alternative to painted exterior wall finishes.
These are supplier statements, not independent test results. A wind-lock description explains the intended panel connection; it does not, by itself, establish the wind rating for a particular building. The rating depends on the building’s location, exposure, substrate, fixing pattern, detailing and installation compliance. Ask for the technical data and the site-specific requirements rather than treating a product feature as a complete engineering approval.

The Sydney homeowner selected installation with 30 mm foam. That is a project specification reported in 2015, while the current Austech page uses broader wording about foam insulation built onto the weatherboards. Do not assume that every current profile, batch or installation uses exactly the same foam arrangement. Confirm the thickness, density, thermal resistance, joins, flashings and compatibility with the wall system in the quotation and technical documents.
Foam attached to or installed with cladding can contribute to the wall assembly’s thermal performance, but the cladding thickness alone cannot predict a home’s energy use. Existing wall framing, bulk insulation, thermal bridges, windows, roof, floor, air leakage, shading and heating and cooling equipment all affect the result. The original report contains no before-and-after measurements, so it cannot be used as proof of a particular energy saving.

Why vinyl was chosen for a lower-maintenance brief
Painting a weather-exposed exterior normally creates a recurring preparation and recoating task. Duratuff Select is presented by Austech as a finish that does not need painting. Its current product page says: “Washing down with warm soapy water occasionally is all that is needed”. That is a supplier statement about the product’s intended upkeep, not an independently audited finding from the Sydney residence.
Austech’s brochure uses similar language, saying: “Once installed, the only maintenance required is an occasional wash down to keep it sparkling clean like day one.” Treat this as product guidance that should be confirmed for the profile and installation you are buying. A homeowner still needs to inspect joints, corners, penetrations, trims, sealants, flashings and nearby building elements. Dirt, salt, pollution, vegetation and accidental damage can change the practical cleaning schedule.
A sensible maintenance plan
- Request the current care instructions before installation and keep them with the warranty documents.
- Inspect the cladding after severe weather and at regular intervals for loose panels, impact damage, distortion or failed adjacent sealants.
- Use the supplier’s approved cleaning method; the published guidance refers to warm soapy water, not abrasive tools, solvents or unapproved coatings.
- Record repairs and cleaning dates, especially if a warranty claim could depend on maintenance history.
- Deal with roof leaks, overflowing gutters, rising damp and vegetation separately; cladding cannot correct a moisture source elsewhere in the building.
Wind, movement and installation detailing
The 180 wind-lock system is intended to hold panels together while accommodating expansion and contraction. Vinyl products move with temperature, so the result depends on allowing movement where the installation instructions require it. Corners, window and door openings, eaves, gable ends, service penetrations and transitions to other materials need compatible trims and clearances.
The 2015 story names the installer but gives no fixing schedule, substrate description, flashing detail or wind classification. A reliable quotation should identify the existing wall condition, removal or retention of the old finish, battens or furring, insulation arrangement, fasteners, trims, penetrations and waste removal. It should also state who is responsible for rectifying concealed defects discovered after work starts.

Because Country Style Cladding is identified in a 2015 report, do not assume that it remains in business or serves your suburb. Verify its current registration, insurance, references and relationship with the product supplier. Austech’s current page says it can provide an installer recommendation, which gives buyers a second route for finding a current installer.
Warranty and Australian Standard claims need document checks
The available documents use different warranty descriptions. The 2015 project article says 50 years, and Austech’s current product page also states a 50-year warranty. Austech’s brochure instead describes a “Transferable, Lifetime* limited warranty.” These statements may belong to different document dates or terms. They should not be reconciled by assuming that “lifetime” means 50 years or that every installation receives identical coverage.
Before signing, ask Austech for the current warranty document that applies to the exact Duratuff Select profile, colour and installation date. Check:
- Whether the warranty is limited, prorated or subject to a defined remedy.
- What “transferable” means, including notification requirements when a property changes hands.
- Coverage for colour change, cracking, distortion, installation components and labour.
- Exclusions for coastal exposure, impact, chemical contamination, building movement or non-approved installation.
- Maintenance, installer and registration conditions that could affect a claim.
- The process, evidence and time limits for reporting a problem.
The brochure identifies Australian Standard 4256.4 and says Select is manufactured to that standard “for our harsh conditions.” That is a supplier statement about the product. Request the current compliance documentation and confirm which parts of the completed wall assembly, rather than only the cladding, are covered by the relevant requirements.

Colours and availability are date-sensitive
The 2015 report describes 13 colours available at that time. Austech’s current page lists Blue Grey, Estate Grey, Flagstone, Harvard Slate, Heather, Linen, Sand, Soft Maple, Sterling, Vintage Cream and White, and asks customers to confirm availability with a salesperson. The two counts should not be treated as a contradiction about a single fixed catalogue: ranges change, and the current page is the better starting point for a new order.
Heather is the colour documented on the Sydney project. If you are matching an existing wall or ordering replacement boards, obtain a current physical sample. Screen images and old project photographs cannot establish a colour match, and a colour name alone does not confirm that the same profile or production range is still available.

How to buy and specify it now
- Describe the wall. Give the supplier the address, building type, number of storeys, exposure, existing cladding, wall substrate and any known moisture or movement problems.
- Confirm the product. Ask whether the quotation is for Duratuff Select vinyl wall cladding and identify the profile, colour, trims, corners, starter strips and finishing pieces.
- Resolve the insulation detail. Put the foam thickness and assembly location in writing. If 30 mm is proposed, ask for the product data and the effect on window, door and service reveals.
- Obtain the installation requirements. Request the current manual, wind-zone guidance, fastening schedule, movement clearances and flashing details before work begins.
- Verify supply. Austech says Duratuff Select is supplied exclusively through Austech. Confirm stock, colour availability, lead time, delivery responsibilities and the process for obtaining matching replacement boards.
- Choose an installer carefully. You can use a supplier referral or source your own contractor. Check current business details, insurance, relevant experience and a written scope; the 2015 reference to Country Style Cladding is not proof of current availability.
- Record the handover. Keep invoices, product identifiers, colour information, installation photographs, warranty registration and care instructions.
Austech also offers a DIY manual. A manual is not the same as a guarantee that a homeowner’s installation will satisfy wind, moisture or warranty requirements. If you are not experienced with cladding details, use a qualified installer and have difficult junctions reviewed before panels are covered.
How to compare cladding options without overstating this case study
The Sydney report is a single-product project note, not a side-by-side test. If you are comparing vinyl with painted timber, fibre-cement, metal or another exterior system, use the same questions for every option:

- Installed cost: include substrate repairs, flashings, trims, insulation, access equipment, waste and future repainting or cleaning.
- Upkeep: distinguish a supplier’s routine-cleaning guidance from independently documented service records.
- Thermal performance: compare the complete wall assembly’s stated thermal resistance, not the cladding label alone.
- Weather and movement: check wind, moisture, expansion, impact and fire requirements for your site and jurisdiction.
- Warranty: compare duration, transfer rules, exclusions, labour coverage and claim procedures in current written documents.
- Appearance: check current colours, profiles, trim availability and the ability to obtain matching boards later.
- Installation: establish whether the existing wall can remain, what preparation is required and who signs off on compliance.
The available material does not provide comparable prices, independent durability tests or measured operating savings. A responsible comparison therefore treats those as questions to answer with current quotations and technical evidence, not as conclusions drawn from the Sydney home’s publicity item.
What the original story does—and does not—prove
It proves that a Sydney homeowner selected Heather Duratuff Select, engaged Country Style Cladding as named in the 2015 account and included 30 mm foam with a low-maintenance objective. It does not identify the project cost, wall area, construction date, energy bills, indoor temperatures, noise levels, cleaning frequency, repairs or the cladding’s condition years later.

That boundary matters when the project is used as inspiration. The most defensible takeaway is not a guaranteed saving or performance number. It is a specification pattern to investigate: a vinyl weatherboard system, a stated foam-insulation component, a supplier-defined maintenance routine and warranty terms that must be verified for the current product.
