Yes, Duratuff Select vinyl cladding may be installed over an existing fibro exterior in some renovations, but the suitability of any particular house depends on a site inspection, the condition of the wall and the fixing system. Austech Building Products describes Duratuff Select as vinyl wall cladding for exterior renovation and says its systems can often be fitted over existing fibro, weatherboard or brick. That is a supplier statement, not a universal approval or confirmation of the exact Architecture & Design project named in the headline.
The available project evidence is enough to explain how this type of makeover works, what design and insulation decisions matter, and what a homeowner should verify before signing a quote. It is not enough to identify the featured home’s location, owner, designer, price, installation date or final energy result.

Duratuff Select is a vinyl wall-cladding range supplied by Austech Building Products. It is intended to create a finished exterior surface during a renovation or on a new structural framework. The attraction for a tired fibro house is visual as much as practical: new horizontal boards or another architectural profile can cover a weathered appearance without requiring the owner to demolish the entire wall system.
Austech presents the product as suitable for exterior renovation and says it can often be installed over existing fibro, weatherboard or brick. “Often” is important. The statement does not remove the need to check whether the existing wall is sound, reasonably flat, dry and capable of receiving the proposed battens, trims and fasteners.

Vinyl cladding is a finish system, not a structural repair. It will not correct movement in a failing wall, stop active leaks or make unsafe substrate safe. Those issues have to be resolved before cladding is installed.
What is—and is not—confirmed about the Architecture & Design makeover
The exact Architecture & Design feature referred to in the title was not available in the material used for this article. Consequently, the project’s address, climate, existing wall build-up, selected colour, profile, insulation, installer, budget and completion result cannot be stated as facts.

Austech’s Sydney page does describe an “aging, weather-beaten fibro exterior” that received an insulated vinyl-cladding facelift. The page does not name the client or prove that this is the same house as the Architecture & Design story. Treat it as a comparable supplier case study, not as a project specification.
There is also a separately reported Duratuff Select project at Buff Point. ArchitectureAu’s 2015 product-news article says that house used the Double Chamfer profile in Soft Maple, with an optional 30 mm insulation layer, and was a finalist in two 2014 National Building Design Awards categories. Those details demonstrate one possible design, but they do not describe the titled makeover.
Why owners consider cladding over an old fibro exterior
A faster visual change than rebuilding the wall
Where the existing fibro is stable, an over-cladding approach can change the street-facing appearance without removing every sheet. The new system supplies its own boards, corners, openings and finishing trims, so the result can read as a deliberate architectural skin rather than a patch repair.

More control over the design language
Duratuff Select is presented with different colours and architectural profiles. Profile choice affects shadow lines and the apparent scale of the facade; colour affects how large, contemporary or coastal the home looks. A homeowner should view full-size samples outdoors because a small indoor swatch cannot show how texture and daylight alter the result.
An opportunity to address comfort during the renovation
Insulation can be part of the wall build-up when the design and existing conditions allow it. The Buff Point example used an optional 30 mm layer, while the Sydney supplier case study refers to insulated vinyl cladding. Neither example establishes a standard thickness or a guaranteed improvement for every house. The insulation type, continuity, vapour control, ventilation and window details all influence the result.
First check: is the fibro wall suitable?
Before comparing colours, have the existing exterior inspected. The installer should document the wall condition and explain exactly what will remain, what will be repaired and what will be covered.
- Substrate condition: Look for loose, cracked, swollen or badly distorted sheets, failed joints, rot in adjoining timber and signs of movement.
- Moisture: Trace staining, damp smells, leaking gutters, failed flashing and water entry around windows before the new skin hides them.
- Flatness and fixing: Ask how battens or other supports will be aligned and fixed, and how loads will be transferred into sound framing.
- Openings and services: Windows, doors, vents, pipes, meters and external lights need compatible trims and clearances.
- Material safety: Older fibro may contain asbestos. Do not cut, drill or remove suspect sheets until a qualified professional has assessed them under the rules that apply in your location.
If the wall cannot provide a reliable fixing base, the contractor may propose repairs, removal or a new structural framework instead of direct over-cladding. A quote should state which option is being used; “installed over fibro” is not precise enough by itself.
How an over-cladding renovation is normally planned
The following sequence is a homeowner’s project checklist, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s installation manual or local building requirements.

- Survey the facade. Record wall dimensions, corners, openings, existing trims, drainage paths and defects. Photograph each elevation so changes are traceable.
- Resolve hazards and defects. Arrange any required asbestos assessment, leak repairs, framing repairs and pest or rot treatment before the cladding crew starts.
- Confirm the build-up. Obtain a drawing or written description showing the existing wall, battens or framework, insulation if included, membranes, cavity or drainage provisions, cladding, trims and fasteners.
- Select the profile and colour. Compare samples against the roof, windows, masonry, paving and neighbouring streetscape. Confirm whether the selected profile is available for every required trim.
- Detail openings and transitions. Require drawings for window heads and sills, external corners, internal corners, soffits, roof junctions, decks and changes to other materials.
- Check approvals and engineering. The builder should identify any planning, building, fire, wind or heritage requirements that apply to the site and edition of the product.
- Install the support system and insulation. Supports must be aligned and fixed as specified. If insulation is included, ask how gaps, compression, moisture control and thermal bridges will be handled.
- Install boards and trims. Panels, joints and fasteners need the movement allowances and clearances required by the current Duratuff documentation. Openings and penetrations should be sealed and flashed, not simply cut around.
- Inspect before handover. Check straight lines, consistent reveals, corner alignment, window detailing, drainage paths and damage. Obtain product records, warranty terms and maintenance instructions.
Choosing a profile, colour and insulation package
Profile
A deeper or more pronounced profile creates stronger shadow lines and may make a broad wall look more articulated. A simpler profile can produce a quieter, more contemporary surface. The correct choice depends on the house proportions and the trims available for that profile, not just the appearance of one sample board.
Colour
Use the roof and window frames as fixed reference points. Pale colours can make a small facade appear larger, while darker colours can emphasise corners and openings. Ask for a sample viewed in direct sun, shade and overcast conditions. Confirm the exact colour name on the quotation rather than relying on a verbal description.
Insulation
Insulation is a design decision, not an automatic feature of every Duratuff Select installation. The Buff Point project reported by ArchitectureAu used an optional 30 mm layer. Austech’s Sydney case study refers to insulated cladding but does not establish a universal thickness, thermal rating or energy saving. Ask for the proposed product, thickness, tested value where available, installation location and treatment at windows, corners and floor lines.
What the available performance claims actually mean
Austech’s Sydney page advertises a 50-year product warranty and resistance to wind and weather. These are vendor claims. Before relying on them, obtain the current written warranty, identify what is covered, check exclusions and confirm whether registration, approved installation or specific maintenance is required. A product warranty is not automatically a warranty on the whole wall assembly or on the contractor’s workmanship.

Wind performance likewise depends on the site exposure, building geometry, fixing pattern and installation details. Request the current technical documentation for the relevant region rather than assuming a headline claim applies unchanged to every elevation.

Two cladding quotes can look similar while allowing very different scopes. Ask each contractor to price the same written specification and to identify exclusions.

No comparable installed price for the featured home is established. The cost will vary with wall area, height, access, repairs, openings, insulation, trims, disposal and regional labour. A low headline price that excludes substrate repairs or window detailing is not comparable with a complete facade renovation.
Maintenance after the makeover
Ask the installer for the current cleaning and inspection instructions. At minimum, plan periodic visual checks of joints, corners, flashings, gutters and penetrations, especially after severe weather. Keep vegetation and stored items from trapping moisture against the wall. Do not repaint, pressure-wash or modify the cladding unless the product documentation permits it; an incompatible coating or aggressive cleaning method can affect the finish and warranty.
Record the product profile, colour, installation date, installer and warranty documents. Those details make future repairs easier and prevent a later contractor from guessing which trims or boards were used.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every fibro wall can be over-clad
Supplier language such as “can often be installed over” describes a possible method, not an approval for every building. Require a condition report and a stated fixing strategy.
Using a case study as a promise
The Sydney aging-fibro example and the Central Coast energy-bill claim are supplier case studies. The Buff Point profile, colour and 30 mm insulation details belong to another project. None should be copied into your specification without checking the actual house.

Choosing a colour before checking trims
A colour that looks right on a board is not useful if the required corner, window or transition trims are unavailable. Confirm the complete system before ordering.
Covering water problems
New boards can conceal leaks until damage is more extensive. Repair roof edges, gutters, flashings and wall defects first, and include inspection access where the design requires it.
Relying on an old warranty sheet
Warranty conditions and product documentation can change. Request the current version for the product and installation date, and keep it with the contract.
Is Duratuff Select a sensible choice for a tired fibro home?
It can be, when the existing wall is suitable, the support and moisture details are designed correctly, and the owner wants a new profiled exterior rather than a painted repair. The product offers a defined palette and the possibility of adding insulation during the work. The evidence does not justify promising a particular energy saving, wind rating, lifespan outcome or installed price for the Architecture & Design project.
