To draw Durga Maa, start by choosing how much you want to include: a simple face, a child-friendly outline, a detailed full figure, or a watercolor painting. For a beginner, lightly sketch the main shapes in pencil first, then add facial features and ornaments; arms, weapons, a lion, and elaborate clothing can be added only if you want a more detailed composition.
Choose a drawing style
There is no single tutorial sequence or level of detail that every drawing must follow. Pick an approach that suits your time, materials, and comfort with drawing:
| Approach | What to draw | Medium and detail |
|---|---|---|
| Face study | Eyes, eyelids, brows, tika, nose, mouth, and nose ring | Pencil or pen; focused on facial features. See Hand Of Art’s feature sequence. |
| Simple or child-friendly drawing | A simplified Durga drawing with fewer elements | Keep the outline and details manageable. ShemarooMe describes its easy drawing episode as suitable for all ages. |
| Detailed full figure | Figure, multiple arms, clothing, crown, weapons, and lion | More shapes and finishing details; a 36-step tutorial demonstrates one possible sequence. |
| Watercolor treatment | A pencil drawing finished with watercolor | Work from lighter shades toward darker details, as in RangCanvas’s two-part tutorial. |
Gather simple materials
- A4 white paper: A practical drawing surface named in the Lavi Arts step-by-step video description.
- 2B pencil: Use it for the first outline and facial details. Lavi Arts lists a 2B pencil among its materials.
- Optional brush pen: Useful if you want stronger, darker lines; Lavi Arts lists a Camel brush pen, but no particular brand is necessary.
- Optional watercolor and brushes: Choose these for a painted finish rather than a pencil- or pen-only drawing.
Draw a simple Durga Maa face step by step
- Place the face lightly. Sketch a loose face shape on the paper, leaving room above for the crown or hair and below for the neck or clothing. Keep the pencil marks light so they are easy to adjust.
- Set the facial features. Mark the approximate positions of the eyes, nose, and mouth before refining any one feature. This gives you a chance to balance their placement while the sketch is still simple.
- Draw the eyes and brows. Add the eyes, eyelids, and brows. Work on their shapes gradually rather than pressing hard into the paper.
- Add the tika, nose, and mouth. Once the main features are placed, draw the tika and refine the nose and mouth.
- Finish with a nose ring and chosen ornaments. The Hand Of Art face-feature sequence includes a nose ring. Add only the extra decorations you want; a first drawing can stay simple.
- Strengthen selected lines. When you are satisfied with the outline, go over the lines you want to keep with a darker pencil line or an optional brush pen.
Extend the drawing into a full figure
If you want more than a face, build the larger composition from its main shapes rather than beginning with small decorations. A full-figure tutorial from DrawingTutorials101 covers the figure, multiple arms, weapons, a lion, clothing, a crown, and finishing details in 36 steps. It was published on September 29, 2015; treat it as one example of a drawing sequence, not a required or definitive standard.

- Block in the upper body and limbs. Place the main figure and arm positions first, keeping the forms simple while you check the overall balance.
- Add clothing and crown. Sketch the larger clothing shapes and crown after the figure is established.
- Choose optional composition details. Add multiple arms, weapons, or a lion if they suit the drawing you have planned. These details increase the amount of sketching, so they are not necessary for a simpler picture.
- Refine and darken. Add smaller details only after the main forms are in place, then strengthen the lines you want to preserve.
Finish the drawing in watercolor
For a watercolor version, make a light pencil outline before painting. RangCanvas’s tutorial describes moving from lighter shades toward darker details. Begin with pale washes, let the main shapes read clearly, and add darker accents after the lighter color areas are in place. The sequence can be adapted to a simple face or a larger figure; watercolor is an optional finish, not a requirement.
