The DVD logo is a trademark associated with the DVD format. Historically, it identified DVD equipment and discs that conformed to that format; the available sources do not establish who administers new logo uses today or what current permissions apply.
What the DVD logo identifies
The mark is associated with the DVD format, rather than being a general indicator that a device can play any optical disc. In a 1997 announcement, Toshiba said the logo would be available for use with equipment and discs conforming to the DVD format. That statement describes the program announced at the time; it should not be read as current licensing guidance.

What the 1997 licensing announcement said
On 11 April 1997, Toshiba announced that the ten companies comprising the DVD Forum had agreed on a DVD format and logo licensing program. Toshiba was to serve as interim licensing agent. The announcement stated: “The DVD Logo will be available for use in connection with DVD equipment/discs which conform to the DVD Format.” Toshiba’s 11 April 1997 announcement.

The announcement distinguished logo and format licensing from patent licensing: it said the license did not cover DVD patents, which would be licensed separately. It named Hitachi, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Mitsubishi Electric, Philips, Pioneer, Sony, THOMSON multimedia, Time Warner, Toshiba, and Victor Company of Japan (JVC) as the participating companies. That is a historical list, not a current membership roster.
What the sources establish about the licensing relationship
A license agreement filed in a USPTO proceeding names DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation as licensor and describes rights to sublicense DVD specifications and logos. This supports the historical relationship reflected in that agreement; it does not establish the corporation’s current status. Filed DVD Format/Logo License Agreement.

Can you use the DVD logo today?
The cited primary sources do not verify the corporation’s present status, whether new licenses are available, or the rules for new uses of the mark. The 1997 announcement and the filed agreement document historical arrangements, not current permission. Do not assume that the logo is free to reproduce or that the historical licensing route remains open. Anyone considering commercial use should seek current guidance from an authoritative rights holder or licensing source before using it.
