Whelan Industries’ Dynamicboil SL is a commercial, wall-mounted boiling-water dispenser range. Its brochure describes a separate heating chamber and storage chamber: incoming water is heated before entering storage, rather than being mixed directly with water already held at boiling temperature. The range is presented in 15 sizes from 2.5 to 450 litres, so the practical buying question is not simply “which unit boils water?” but “how much water must be available at the busiest moment, and what electrical and plumbing service can the site support?”
The figures below come from Whelan’s product brochure and related Architecture & Design listings. The brochure does not state an issue date and says specifications may change without notice. Treat capacities, recovery rates, dimensions and connections as selection guidance until Whelan confirms the current model documentation for your project.

What is a Dynamicboil SL dispenser?
Dynamicboil SL is described as a commercial boiling-water system intended for fixed installation rather than a countertop kettle. The product brochure identifies a wall-mounted architecture with a heating chamber followed by a storage chamber. Whelan says the incoming cold supply is boiled in the heating chamber before it reaches storage, and that incoming water is not mixed with stored boiling water. That description is a manufacturer claim from the brochure, not an independent performance test.
This arrangement is intended to make a large volume of boiling water available from a plumbed system. It also means the unit has to be designed into the building: the selected model needs a suitable cold-water connection, electrical supply, physical support, access for service and an overflow route. Capacity alone is not enough to specify one safely.

How the heating and storage arrangement works
Separate heating and storage chambers
According to the brochure, cold mains water first enters a heating chamber. After heating, it moves into a storage chamber from which boiling water is dispensed. Whelan’s brochure calls this a distinctive feature of the SL Series and says the incoming water is boiled before entering storage. Because the wording is promotional and the “only unit in the world” comparison has not been independently verified, it is more accurate to use it as a description of the claimed design than as a proven industry-wide distinction.
Why the distinction matters to a specifier
A separate heating stage and storage stage affect how you think about demand. The tank gives you a reserve for a short, high-use period, while the heater’s recovery rate determines how quickly that reserve can be rebuilt. A unit that has enough stored water for a meeting-room rush may still be unsuitable if the site draws heavily for hours and the heater cannot recover fast enough.
The brochure does not provide a complete performance test method, inlet-temperature assumption or temperature definition for every model. Do not convert the brochure’s cup figures into a guaranteed service rate without asking Whelan for the current technical sheet.
How much capacity do you need?
Start with simultaneous demand
Whelan’s selection chart is based on the number of cups required at one time. The brochure states that one litre is approximately five cups. Use that as a first-pass planning conversion:

- Estimated litres required at one time = cups required at one time ÷ 5.
- Estimated cups available = nominal litres × 5.
For example, a peak requirement of about 100 cups would indicate roughly 20 litres of nominal capacity before allowing for operating margin. A 250-cup event would indicate about 50 litres. These are planning calculations from Whelan’s approximation, not a guarantee that every litre can be dispensed at exactly the same temperature or without interruption.
Add a margin for real operating conditions
Count the busiest realistic period, not the daily average. Include staff breaks, conference sessions, catering service, shift changes and any other event that creates a queue. Then allow for demand that arrives while the unit is recovering. A useful specification brief records:

- Expected cups drawn in the busiest 10- to 30-minute period.
- Expected total draw during the busiest operating hour.
- Whether cups are filled individually or used for urns, cooking or food preparation.
- Whether another boiling-water source is available if the dispenser is temporarily unavailable.
- Any site rule requiring spare capacity for future occupancy or changed use.
If the calculation lands between listed models, select the next suitable size only after checking the electrical load, mounting dimensions and recovery data. Oversizing can increase installation cost and service demand; undersizing creates queues and repeated recovery cycles.
Dynamicboil SL range and the documented BW 450 figures
The brochure lists 15 Dynamicboil SL sizes spanning 2.5 to 450 litres. It does not provide a complete, current table of every model’s capacity, recovery, power and dimensions in the material reviewed here, so those missing values should be obtained directly from Whelan before ordering.

The brochure’s statement that BW 450 can provide 2,250 cups and recover at 340 cups per hour should be read together with its qualification that specifications may change without notice. No independent test report or dated laboratory result was supplied for those numbers.
Electrical and plumbing requirements to confirm
Electrical service
The brochure says units up to 90 litres can connect to a 10-amp power point. That is a range-level statement, not permission to assume every model below 90 litres has identical wiring, protection or plug arrangements. Confirm the exact model, voltage, phase, current, isolator requirements and local code obligations with Whelan and a licensed electrician.

The electrician should match the manufacturer’s current wiring diagram to the building supply and protective devices, including requirements for isolation, earthing and service access.
Water inlet, electrical entry and overflow placement
Whelan’s brochure describes configurable placement for the water inlet, electrical service and overflow. That flexibility can help when a wall has existing services, but it must be agreed before rough-in. Ask for a dimensioned drawing showing connection positions for the exact model and orientation. Coordinate the drawing with the plumber, electrician, builder and anyone responsible for wall support.

Wall, access and service planning
Wall-mounted equipment transfers a substantial load to the supporting structure, especially when the storage chamber is full. Confirm the operating weight, fixing method and substrate with Whelan; the reviewed brochure material does not establish those values. Keep enough clearance to remove panels, inspect controls and replace serviceable parts. Also check the delivery route: a unit that fits the finished wall may not fit through a door, lift or corridor in its shipping configuration.
Installation checklist before ordering
- Record demand: document peak cups at one time and expected cups per hour for the busiest use.
- Shortlist capacity: use Whelan’s five-cups-per-litre approximation, then add a margin for queues and future demand.
- Request current documents: obtain the exact model’s data sheet, dimensions, wiring information, connection schedule and installation instructions.
- Verify the supply: have a licensed electrician confirm voltage, phase, circuit rating, protection, isolation and the meaning of any notation such as “3/240.”
- Coordinate plumbing: confirm inlet size, filtration or treatment requirements, shut-off access and the overflow connection and route.
- Check structure: confirm wall strength, fixing details, operating weight and service clearances.
- Confirm site conditions: check water pressure, water quality, ambient conditions, drainage and the route for bringing the unit into the building.
- Approve the final schedule: make sure the quotation and drawings identify the same model, capacity, connections and electrical details.
Dynamicboil compared with Econoboil and Thermoboil
Econoboil and Thermoboil are related Whelan wall-mounted ranges, but they are not additional Dynamicboil SL model names. The brochure lists Econoboil in 2.5- and 5-litre sizes, while Thermoboil is listed from 7.5 to 60 litres. It describes thermostat control, a manual reset and an over-temperature cut-out for those ranges. Architecture & Design characterizes Econoboil and Thermoboil as products for commercial and office kitchens.

Choose between these lines by demand and installation brief, not by the product name alone. Dynamicboil SL is the range in the brochure associated with the separate heating-and-storage description and the very broad capacity span. Econoboil and Thermoboil cover smaller published capacities and are described with thermostat-based control features.

A tap-based under-bench arrangement may suit a point-of-use kitchen where ambient or chilled water is part of the brief. A Dynamicboil SL installation is the more relevant comparison when the project needs a wall-mounted commercial boiling-water reserve at a much larger stated capacity. Confirm actual output and service requirements for either system before selecting it.
Common specification mistakes and fixes
Choosing by daily volume instead of peak volume
A site may consume hundreds of cups in a day but only need a modest reserve if demand is spread out. Conversely, a short conference break can overwhelm a smaller unit despite low daily use. Fix this by recording the busiest simultaneous draw and the busiest hour separately.

Treating brochure numbers as current certified ratings
The brochure’s publication year is not stated, and it expressly says specifications may change without notice. Fix this by attaching the current manufacturer data sheet and model-specific installation drawing to the purchase order.
Assuming every model uses the same power connection
The 10-amp statement applies to units up to 90 litres in the brochure; the BW 450 entry lists 7.2 kW and “3/240.” Fix this by having an electrician approve the exact supply and protection arrangement before rough-in.
Leaving overflow and service access until the end
Overflow location and service clearances can conflict with cabinetry, walls or other equipment. Fix this by coordinating connection positions and access zones on the architectural and services drawings before construction.

- Are the stated litres and cup figures storage capacity, usable dispensing capacity or a selection-chart estimate?
- What test conditions produce the stated recovery rate, including inlet temperature and target outlet temperature?
- What does the selected model’s electrical notation mean, and what circuit and isolation arrangement is required?
- What are the current operating and shipping dimensions, weights and wall-fixing details?
- Where can the inlet, electrical service and overflow be positioned on this exact model?
- What filtration, water-quality, pressure and drainage conditions apply?
- What clearances are required for installation, cleaning and service?
- What commissioning checks and maintenance intervals are specified?
- What current price, lead time and warranty terms apply to the project location?
Bottom line for selecting a Dynamicboil SL
Dynamicboil SL is a documented Whelan commercial wall-mounted boiling-water range with a stated 2.5- to 450-litre span and a brochure-described heating chamber ahead of storage. Select a size from measured peak demand, using the brochure’s approximate five-cups-per-litre conversion only as an initial calculation. Then verify the exact model’s recovery, electrical configuration, dimensions, inlet and overflow arrangement with Whelan before design or installation. Econoboil and Thermoboil are smaller related wall-mounted ranges with thermostat controls described in the brochure, while Twin Tap is a separate under-bench filtered-water system with optional chilled output.
