The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde is model HP09. It uses two different filter systems: a permanent catalytic filter and a replaceable HEPA+Carbon filter. Dyson recommends changing the HEPA+Carbon filter every 12 months, or sooner when the machine displays a filter-life alert. The catalytic filter is designed not to require replacement. Before ordering, match the part number to your HP09 and check Dyson’s current compatibility guidance, because more than one filter product is now listed for this model.

The HP09’s filtration system has two parts with different maintenance requirements:
- Permanent catalytic filter: supplied as part of the machine and described by Dyson as not requiring replacement.
- HEPA+Carbon filter: the consumable filter that captures airborne particles and adsorbs some gases. This is the filter you replace on a maintenance schedule.
Do not treat “the HP09 filter” as a single interchangeable component. The catalytic element and the HEPA+Carbon element have separate roles, and the replacement procedure in the U.S. manual is specifically for the HEPA+Carbon filter.

Dyson describes the HP09 as a purifier, fan and heater. Its Auto mode uses onboard sensors to adjust operation according to detected air quality, while the remote, app and supported voice-control services provide operating controls. Those are manufacturer descriptions of the product’s functions; they are not independent measurements of how quickly a particular room will be cleaned or heated.
How often should you replace the HP09 filter?
Dyson’s U.S. support guidance recommends replacing the HEPA+Carbon filter every 12 months or when the machine notifies you. The interval is a recommendation, not a guarantee that every household will use the filter at the same rate. Dust load, smoke, cooking emissions, pets and operating hours can affect how quickly a filter reaches its service indication.
The 12-month guidance applies to the replaceable HEPA+Carbon cartridge. Dyson says the catalytic filter does not need changing. There is therefore no routine annual catalytic-filter purchase in the HP09 maintenance schedule.
What the filter warning means
The filter-life indicator is a replacement prompt. It does not establish an independently measured room-air concentration, and it should not be read as a laboratory test of the purifier’s performance. When the indicator appears, plan a cartridge replacement rather than trying to wash or vacuum the HEPA+Carbon filter.

Which replacement filter fits a Dyson HP09?
Dyson’s model-specific information identifies part 965432-01 as a compatible 360° Glass HEPA + Carbon air-purifier filter for the HP09. A separate, newer Dyson product page also lists the HP09 for part 974527-01, the 360° Combi HEPA+K-Carbon filter. Because these are distinct products, confirm the compatibility list and instructions shown for your exact machine before ordering.

Use the model identifier HP09 and the complete part number when searching. Do not assume that a cartridge advertised for another Hot+Cool model will fit merely because the machines look similar. Filter housings, covers and electronic recognition can vary between models.

How to replace the Dyson HP09 HEPA+Carbon filter
Follow the sequence in the U.S. manual. Replacing the cartridge is a physical service operation, so keep the unit stable and avoid operating it while the covers are removed.

- Switch the HP09 off. Use the power control and wait for the fan and heater to stop.
- Unplug the machine. The manual instructs owners to disconnect power before filter replacement. Do not rely only on standby mode.
- Release the outer covers. Open the retaining mechanisms as shown in the manual and remove the covers from the purifier body without forcing them.
- Remove the used HEPA+Carbon filter. Lift out the spent cartridge. Handle it carefully, especially if it has collected dust or smoke residue; place it directly into a waste bag.
- Install the new cartridge. Seat the replacement filter squarely in the housing. Check that it is oriented correctly and fully engaged around the 360-degree intake area.
- Reinstall the outer covers. Close each cover and make sure the latches are secure. A cover that is not seated can prevent normal operation.
- Reconnect power and turn the unit on. Confirm that the display and controls respond normally.
- Reset the filter-life indicator. Press and hold the Night mode button until the display counts down from five. Release it after the reset completes.
The reset is part of the replacement procedure, not a substitute for installing a new cartridge. Resetting the indicator with the old filter still in place removes the reminder without restoring filtration capacity.
How to reset the filter light after changing the cartridge
With the new filter installed, covers secured and the HP09 powered, press and hold the Night mode button. The display should perform a five-second countdown. Keep holding through the countdown; releasing too early may leave the old filter-life status active.
If the indicator does not clear
- Turn the machine off, unplug it and confirm that the replacement cartridge is seated completely.
- Check that every outer cover is latched and aligned with the body.
- Restore power and repeat the Night mode-button hold through the full five-count sequence.
- Confirm that the cartridge is intended for HP09 and that its part number matches the current Dyson compatibility information.
- If the display still reports the old status, stop forcing the covers or controls and use Dyson’s model-specific support service for further instructions.
Does the catalytic filter ever need replacing?
Dyson says the HP09 catalytic filter is permanent and does not need replacement. Owners should therefore replace only the HEPA+Carbon cartridge on the normal schedule unless Dyson gives them different instructions for a particular service issue.
Do not remove, wash, spray or chemically treat the catalytic element as a do-it-yourself maintenance step. The documented owner procedure covers removal of the replaceable HEPA+Carbon filter and resetting its life indicator; it does not call for servicing the catalytic filter.

What does the HP09 claim about particle filtration?
For the 965432-01 Glass HEPA + Carbon filter, Dyson publishes a claim of 99.97% capture of particles as small as 0.3 microns and labels the filter HEPA H13-grade. The particle size and percentage belong together: the statement concerns particles at or above the stated size under the manufacturer’s test definition.
That figure should be interpreted narrowly. It describes a filter-level specification, not a measured clean-air delivery rate for a furnished room. Real-world results also depend on airflow, room volume, placement, doors, leaks, pollutant sources and operating mode. No independent comparative test or independently verified room-cleaning result is established here, so the specification should not be converted into a ranking against other purifier fan-heaters.
Using Auto mode, heating and fan functions
In Auto mode, Dyson says the HP09 uses onboard sensors to adjust operation according to air quality. You can manually select a desired temperature when using the heating function. The same machine can circulate air without heating, but the choice of mode changes how it operates and how much power and noise it may produce.
The available materials do not establish independent noise measurements, energy costs, clean-air delivery rates or a validated room-size limit. Treat any such figures shown in third-party listings as separate claims that require their own source and test conditions.

Maintenance and safety checklist
- Replace the HEPA+Carbon filter every 12 months or when the HP09 displays its replacement notification.
- Leave the permanent catalytic filter in place; Dyson says it does not require replacement.
- Unplug before opening covers or removing the cartridge.
- Use the exact HP09-compatible part number, not a generic “Hot+Cool” description.
- Close and latch the outer covers before restoring power.
- Reset the indicator with the Night mode button and complete the five-count display sequence.
- Keep the used filter contained when disposing of it, particularly if the unit has operated around smoke, dust or strong odors.
- Do not infer that a cleared indicator proves the new filter is genuine or correctly matched; verify the part number and fit separately.
Common ordering and installation mistakes
Buying by product nickname alone
“Hot+Cool” covers a family of products. Order by HP09 plus the complete replacement part number. A cartridge that fits another model may not be approved for your machine.
Confusing the two filter generations
Dyson’s pages identify both 965432-01 Glass HEPA + Carbon and 974527-01 Combi HEPA+K-Carbon products in connection with HP09. They are not the same product name or part number. Check the current listing for your unit before paying, and retain the order details in case support needs to confirm compatibility.
Resetting before replacing
The indicator reset changes the service reminder only. It does not clean the old cartridge or extend its useful life. Replace first, secure the covers, then reset.
Expecting a whole-room guarantee from the 99.97% figure
The published percentage is a Dyson filter specification for particles as small as 0.3 microns. It should not be presented as an independently measured room result or as evidence that the HP09 removes every type of pollutant.
Other HP09 parts owners may need
Dyson’s support information lists a genuine replacement remote control under part 969897-14. The model-specific parts area also lists filter shrouds and other components, but availability can change. Confirm that a part is shown for HP09 before ordering, especially when a listing uses a family name rather than the model number.
