Earth Day is observed every year on April 22. It began in the United States in 1970 as a day of rallies, teach-ins and locally organized activities, then grew into an international observance. In 2026, its theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” with a focus on renewable energy. You can take part by learning, joining or organizing a local event, volunteering, or making conservation choices at home.
When is Earth Day?
Earth Day falls on April 22 each year. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists the date and year-round environmental information on its Earth Day page.
Earth Day is not a recurring U.S. federal holiday, according to the Congressional Research Service (CRS). Congress has designated Earth Day on particular dates through public laws, but that is different from making April 22 a federal holiday every year.

Why is Earth Day on April 22?
Senator Gaylord Nelson called for environmental teach-ins, drawing on the campus teach-in model used to encourage public discussion. Organizers chose a weekday between winter weather and final exams to make it easier for college students to participate. April 22, 1970, was the date they selected; the annual observance has continued on that date.

The original event was a U.S. grassroots mobilization, not the global format familiar today. It brought together rallies, speeches, teach-ins and locally organized activities. Nelson later wrote that his primary objective was to show national political leaders “that there was broad and deep support for the environmental movement.”
How did Earth Day become an international observance?
The first Earth Day helped put environmental concerns on the U.S. national agenda. The EPA’s institutional history reports that 20 million Americans demonstrated in cities across the country in 1970. Congress authorized the creation of the EPA in December of that year. The agency connects Earth Day with the growing public and political attention to environmental issues, but the event should not be treated as the sole cause of a specific law or agency.

How can you celebrate Earth Day?
There is no required checklist. Choose an activity that fits your time, interests and community. GovInfo suggests education, local events, volunteering and conservation at home; the EPA also points people to environmental information and actions throughout the year.
- Learn and share: Explore an environmental issue or use EPA lesson and homework resources, then discuss what you learn with others.
- Attend an event: Look for a local Earth Day gathering, teach-in, cleanup or other community activity.
- Organize a gathering: If there is no event nearby, invite others to learn or take part in a practical local activity.
- Volunteer: Find a community group or environmental organization with an activity suited to your availability.
- Conserve at home: Choose a realistic household action connected to resource use or energy. The official guidance offers this as an option, not a measure of how much a person cares.
The cited sources do not rank these choices by quantified environmental impact, so select based on what is useful and feasible for you rather than assuming one activity is universally best.
