Make washable cloth napkins by cutting prewashed cotton or linen into squares, folding a narrow hem on every edge, pressing, and stitching it down. An 18-inch cut square is a dependable dinner-napkin starting point; careful pressing and optional mitered corners give a tidy, low-bulk finish.
Choose the size before you cut
Napkin dimensions are measured before hemming unless noted otherwise. Sewing.org’s technical guidance (2009) places practical sizes from 10-inch cocktail napkins through 22-inch dinner napkins. For everyday meals, 18 inches is the most convenient all-purpose choice; 20 or 22 inches provides more coverage.
| Use | Cut size | Expected result or note |
|---|---|---|
| Cocktail | 10 inches | Small drinks and snacks |
| Small place setting | 12 inches | Compact luncheon napkin |
| Luncheon | 15 inches | Useful for light meals |
| Dinner | 18 inches | Standard starting size |
| Large dinner | 20–22 inches | More lap coverage; needs more fabric |
AllPeopleQuilt’s project cuts an 18-inch square and finishes at about 17 inches square after hemming. Its layout uses one fat quarter per napkin, although the exact yield depends on the fat-quarter dimensions and the fabric’s usable width.

Light- to medium-weight cotton is the easiest choice: it presses cleanly, is widely available and tolerates frequent laundering. Linen gives a softer, more textured look but wrinkles more readily. Madam Sew also identifies terry and microfiber as possible napkin fabrics; their thicker or more absorbent surfaces may need a wider hem and a longer drying time.

Prewash and dry the fabric as you plan to launder the finished napkins. Sallie Tomato specifically recommends prewashing before cutting so later shrinkage does not distort the finished squares.
Gather supplies
- Cotton or linen fabric
- Coordinating thread
- Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat, or sharp fabric scissors
- Fabric marker or chalk
- Pins or sewing clips
- Iron and ironing surface
- Sewing machine
A rotary cutter, ruler and mat make multiple identical squares faster to measure, but scissors work for a small set. Janome’s beginner project specifies one yard of fabric, coordinating thread and basic cutting tools for four 18-inch squares; actual yardage varies with fabric width, shrinkage and pattern placement.

Make a simple narrow-hem napkin
- Prewash and press. Wash and dry the fabric, then iron it flat.
- Mark and cut. Measure your chosen square with a ruler, check that the grain is straight, mark all four sides and cut accurately. For a four-napkin set, Janome’s project cuts four 18-inch squares from one yard of fabric.
- Press the first fold. On each edge, press approximately 1/8 inch toward the wrong side. A narrow seam gauge or ruler helps keep the fold even.
- Enclose the raw edge. Fold the edge over again by roughly the same amount, or use a wider 1/2-inch double fold if you prefer a sturdier hem. Press each side before sewing.
- Stitch. Sew close to the inner fold all the way around, backstitching at the beginning and end. Janome’s instructions use 1/4-inch seam allowances in its beginner project; follow the allowance specified by your selected layout rather than mixing measurements.
- Finish and press. Trim thread tails, inspect the corners for missed raw edges and give the completed napkin a final press.
For a set of four, Janome estimates about 30 minutes for a beginner. That is project guidance, not a guaranteed production time; cutting, fabric weight and corner treatment can change the total.
Fold mitered corners for a neater finish
A mitered corner turns the two hems into a diagonal seam instead of stacking four layers in one spot. It is optional, but it reduces bulk and gives square napkins a more professional appearance.

- Press the chosen hem allowance on all four edges, then unfold the corner area.
- Trim or clip the corner excess so the folded edges will meet without a lump. Sallie Tomato recommends trimming corners to reduce bulk.
- Fold each edge to enclose its raw edge and press the folds firmly.
- At each corner, bring the two folded hems together on a diagonal, matching the fold lines. Clip or pin in place.
- Sew from the inner fold down the diagonal corner seam, then continue around the napkin close to the hem’s inner fold.
- Press the finished corner flat and check that no raw edge remains visible.
Sewing.org’s narrow-hem method similarly calls for clipping and folding the corners to create a mitered double hem. Practice on one scrap or a single napkin before sewing the whole set.
Decide between the main construction options
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Single-layer cotton with narrow hem | Fast, inexpensive everyday napkins | Edges require careful pressing to stay even |
| Single-layer linen | Soft, textured table settings | More visible wrinkling and possible fraying |
| Mitered hem | Neat corners and reduced bulk | More marking and pressing than a simple turn |
| Decorative topstitch | Visible detail on plain fabric | Stitching must remain even on all four sides |
| Reversible or double-layer construction | Two coordinated fabrics or extra body | More cutting, seam work and bulk than a single layer |
Keep decorative stitching optional. Sallie Tomato recommends topstitching near the interior fold and notes that decorative stitches can be added if desired.

Troubleshoot common problems
Wavy or rippled edges
The fold may be uneven or the fabric may have stretched during sewing. Repress the edge, reduce handling, and sew with the fabric feeding naturally instead of pulling it.
Bulky corners
Too much fabric is stacked at the turn. Clip or trim the corner before folding, then press the diagonal miter sharply.

Raw threads showing
The first fold was too shallow, or the second fold shifted. Unpick the affected section, press a consistent double fold that fully encloses the edge, and resew close to the inner fold.
Napkin is not square
Check the grain and measure both diagonals before hemming. A slightly skewed cut becomes more noticeable after pressing and stitching.
Care for the finished napkins
Wash according to the fabric’s care label and dry using the setting you intend to use routinely. Remove napkins promptly and press while slightly damp if you want crisp folds; air-dry or accept natural linen texture for a more relaxed look. Treat stains before heat-drying, since high heat can set them.
