Build a clean hexagon wall shelf by cutting six matching boards with accurate 30-degree miters, gluing the joints, and securing the finished box with hardware rated for your wall and intended load. The method works for a single shelf or a honeycomb arrangement, and you can adapt the interior opening and shelf depth to your room instead of treating one project plan as universal.
This guide walks through sizing, tool choices, a tape or strap-clamp glue-up, finish options, and safe mounting. It also shows where a miter saw is helpful, what to do when you do not have one, and how to avoid the gaps and weak joints that make hexagon shelves frustrating.

Choose the shelf size before buying lumber
A hexagon shelf is made from six equal side pieces. Its appearance depends on two dimensions: the opening you want to see from the front and the width of the board, which becomes the shelf’s depth. A wider board creates a deeper box; a narrower board creates a shallower display. Decide where the shelf will hang and what it must hold before you cut.
Do not copy a cut length without checking the plan it came from. Kreg Tool’s Modern Hexagonal Floating Shelves example uses two 2×8 boards and cuts 12 pieces measuring 1.5 × 7.25 × 10 inches—enough for two shelves. In that example, the desired interior size is 7 inches and the plan adds 3 inches to create the rough section length. Those numbers describe that plan’s lumber and layout, not a universal hexagon formula.

Make a full-size sketch or mark the intended interior opening on cardboard. Check that the finished outside dimensions will fit between trim, switches, artwork, or neighboring shelves. If you plan a honeycomb arrangement, leave a consistent visual gap between boxes and account for the wall area occupied by the complete group.

Core materials
- Straight boards in the width and thickness you selected. Six pieces are required for one shelf; twelve are required for two.
- Wood glue labeled for woodworking. It is the direct consumable named by both the Kreg and Northeastern project guides.
- Painter’s tape for the hinged-tape assembly method, or a strap clamp for the alternative glue-up.
- Sandpaper or a sander, plus a clean cloth or brush for removing dust.
- Your chosen finish: stain followed by water-based polyurethane, clear finish, oil, wax, or paint.
- Mounting hardware suited to the wall and load, such as brackets, anchors, pocket-hole hardware, or sawtooth/keyhole hangers.
Cutting and measuring tools
- A miter saw set for 30-degree cuts is the most direct way to make the six matching miters. Northeastern Makerspaces lists a miter saw, tape measure, brad nailer, and sander for its Hexagon Shelf project.
- A table-saw setup can produce the complementary angle described in Kreg’s plan. Use the setup specified by your saw manual and verify the result on scrap before cutting project stock.
- A jigsaw can be used for the rough-length step in Kreg’s plan, but rough cutting does not replace accurate, repeatable miters.
- A square, pencil, measuring tape, and a stop block or fence help keep every piece the same length.
- A stud finder is useful when a stud-mounted installation is possible; Bunnings includes one in its honeycomb shelf installation guide.
- Use eye and hearing protection. Keep fingers a safe distance from a miter-saw blade and brad nailer, as Northeastern’s safety reminders require.
Understand the 30-degree cut layout
Each of the six sides ends in a 30-degree miter. Two matching miters meet at every corner, so an error on one piece repeats around the entire hexagon. The six raw lengths must match, and the saw must hold the same angle for every cut. A tiny discrepancy can show up as a widening gap at the final joint.
Set the saw according to its manual, then make test cuts on scrap of the same width and thickness as your shelf boards. Bring two test pieces together and inspect the outside and inside faces. Adjust the angle or fence only after the pair meets cleanly. Once the angle is correct, use a stop block so all six pieces share one length.

Mark the show face and the orientation of each piece before cutting. Keep the grain direction visually consistent if you want a uniform pattern. Label the pieces 1 through 6; this makes it easier to diagnose a joint that does not close during dry fitting.
Build the hexagon step by step
1. Cut six identical sides
- Measure the rough length required by your chosen interior opening and board width. If you are following Kreg’s example, the plan’s 10-inch pieces are tied to its 7-inch interior and 2×8 stock.
- Cut one piece, then use it as a reference for the remaining five. A stop block gives more reliable repeatability than measuring each board independently.
- Make the 30-degree miter at each end, keeping the orientation consistent. Check the first completed piece against the saw setting and your sketch before producing the rest.
- Dry-lay all six pieces on a flat surface. Confirm that the six corners close and that the front faces form one continuous plane.
2. Sand before assembly
Sand the show faces, edges, and cut ends while the parts are still separate. Kreg sands before glue-up because it is easier to reach every surface at this stage. Progress through grits appropriate to your lumber and finish system, then remove all dust. Avoid rounding the miter edges; softened edges can create a visible V-shaped gap even when the angles are correct.

3. Assemble with painter’s tape
- Place the six pieces in a straight row with the show face down and the miter points touching. Kreg’s method uses painter’s tape across the joints to create flexible hinges.
- Press the tape firmly over each joint. Leave enough tape on both sides to hold the parts while they fold.
- Open the strip slightly and apply a thin, even bead of wood glue to each end-grain miter. Kreg suggests letting a small amount on end grain begin to dry before adding more for the final assembly; follow the adhesive maker’s directions rather than using an invented waiting time.
- Fold the taped strip into a hexagon and bring the last joint together. Check the front face and inside corners while the glue is workable.
- Wipe squeeze-out with a damp cloth or tool recommended by the glue manufacturer. Do not flood the joint and drive glue into the wood pores you intend to stain.
4. Assemble with a strap clamp instead
A strap clamp is an alternative described by Westfalia’s DIY guide. Apply glue to the six miters, bring the pieces together, and position the strap around the outside perimeter. Tighten gradually and evenly so the clamp closes the joints without pulling one corner out of alignment. Painter’s tape and a strap clamp are alternative methods; the cited guides do not provide comparative joint-strength test results.

5. Let the glue cure, then clean the joints
Keep the hexagon on a flat surface while the adhesive cures for the period stated on its label. Once cured, remove tape or the strap, pare away hardened squeeze-out carefully, and sand any residue or sawdust. Inspect every corner under good light. A hairline gap may be filled only with a product compatible with your chosen finish; a large or uneven gap usually means the angle or length needs correction before finishing.
Finish the wood for the room
Stain and water-based polyurethane
Kreg’s example applies stain after glue cleanup and adds water-based polyurethane after the stain dries. Sand and dust the surface according to the stain and polyurethane labels, apply the products in a ventilated area, and observe the manufacturer’s recoat and drying instructions. Drying time varies with product, temperature, humidity, coat thickness, and airflow, so a generic cure-time promise would be misleading.
Clear, oil, wax, or paint
Westfalia’s guide lists oil, wax, stain, and paint as other finish choices: Build a Hexagon Shelf: Your DIY Decor Guide. A clear finish preserves the board’s natural color; oil or wax changes the sheen and tactile feel; paint lets the shelf match a wall or trim color. Test the complete finish schedule on an offcut, especially when combining filler, stain, and a water-based topcoat.

Paint all accessible surfaces, including the inside faces and end grain, if the shelf will be viewed from several angles. Mask the wall-contact areas only if your mounting system needs bare wood for a specific adhesive or bracket; otherwise, finish them as directed by the hardware instructions.

Mounting hardware is not interchangeable. Kreg lists brackets, anchors, and pocket holes as possible approaches. Bunnings describes locating a stud and drilling into it, while Westfalia lists sawtooth and keyhole hangers. Choose a system that matches the wall material, the shelf construction, and the weight and shape of the contents. None of these guides establishes a universal load rating for a handmade shelf or a universal drywall-anchor recommendation.
Stud-mounted installation
- Scan the wall with a stud finder and confirm the stud position with a small test hole or another method appropriate to your wall.
- Position the shelf, mark the hanger or bracket holes, and check level in both directions.
- Drill pilot holes sized for the selected screws, then fasten into the stud following the hardware maker’s instructions.
- Set the shelf on the hardware and test it empty before adding objects.
Drywall or masonry installation
When a stud is unavailable, select anchors specifically rated for your wall type and the intended load. Follow the anchor manufacturer’s drill size, hole depth, screw, and installation instructions. Masonry, plaster, hollow drywall, and tile require different hardware; do not assume an anchor that works in one substrate is suitable for another. Brackets can distribute load, while keyhole or sawtooth hangers provide a cleaner appearance but depend heavily on correct fastener placement and wall engagement.

Plan a honeycomb grouping
For several shelves, lay out the complete pattern on the floor first. Mark the centerline and top edge on the wall, then transfer each hanger location. Install one shelf, verify its level and spacing, and use it as the reference for the next. Keep heavier objects in shelves whose hardware is directly supported by studs or appropriately rated anchors.

Troubleshoot gaps, wobble, and finish problems
One corner will not close
Stop before adding more glue. Compare the two pieces at that corner on a flat surface, verify that both miters face the same direction, and check the saw angle with a fresh scrap pair. A length mismatch can also force the final joint open, so measure all six pieces against the labeled reference piece.
The hexagon twists under the clamp
Release pressure, realign the six sides on a flat surface, and retighten gradually. With tape, fold the strip slowly instead of snapping all corners together at once. With a strap clamp, keep the strap centered around the perimeter and watch the front face as tension increases.
Stain looks blotchy
Uneven sanding, glue residue, and different end-grain absorption can produce color variation. Remove squeeze-out before it cures, sand consistently, and test the stain schedule on scrap from the same board. If the result is unacceptable, let the finish cure as directed before deciding whether to sand back or switch to paint.
The shelf feels loose on the wall
Remove the contents and inspect every fastener. Confirm that the screw or anchor is intended for the wall material, that the hole size matches the hardware instructions, and that the bracket or hanger is firmly attached to sound wood. Do not compensate for an unsuitable anchor by adding weight or relying on adhesive alone.
