The easiest documented hanging choices for an indoor garden are pothos and spider plant. Pothos is a forgiving trailing vine for bright, indirect light, while spider plant adapts to a range of indoor conditions and suits hanging baskets. A heartleaf philodendron may also be manageable, but its care and pet-safety profile must be checked for the exact species or cultivar. Those recommendations are supported by university extension and animal-safety guidance; a reliable, evidence-based ranking of 13 different plants is not.
That distinction matters. “Easy” depends on the light at your actual hanging point, how consistently you can check soil, and whether pets can reach the foliage. Use the sourced choices below, then apply the selection and care process to any additional plant you consider instead of assuming every trailing houseplant has the same needs.

What makes a hanging plant easy?
An easy hanging plant is not one that can be ignored. It is one whose requirements fit the place where you intend to hang it and the routine you can maintain. Three questions determine whether a plant will be low effort for you:
- How much light reaches the leaves? A ceiling hook, window recess, and nearby shelf can receive very different light even in the same room.
- Can you inspect the soil? Hanging pots are harder to reach, so a plant that needs frequent checking becomes inconvenient if the basket is mounted high.
- Can pets reach it? Safety is species-specific. Never infer that one plant is safe because another plant in the same room is.
Trailing growth is useful in a basket or elevated planter because stems can spill over the rim, but the growth habit alone does not establish light, watering, or toxicity requirements. Match all three factors before you buy.

The strongest documented choices
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Penn State Extension describes pothos as an easy-care vining houseplant and a good hanging plant. Place it in bright, indirect light and water when the soil is dry; occasional fertilizing is part of its routine. See the complete extension guidance at Penn State Extension’s pothos houseplant guide.
Pothos can persist in lower light for a time, but that is tolerance, not an ideal condition. Penn State notes that desirable leaf qualities may diminish in low light. Variegated or otherwise bright markings can become less pronounced, and the plant may look less vigorous. If the hanging site is dim, move the plant closer to a bright window with filtered light rather than treating low light as a feature.
For watering, check the potting medium rather than following a universal calendar. When the soil has dried, water thoroughly and allow excess to drain; a hanging container should never be left sitting in a saucer of water. The interval will change with season, room temperature, pot size, and light, so “water weekly” is not a dependable rule.
Pothos is often chosen for rooms where a trailing silhouette is the main design goal. Trim long stems with clean scissors if they obstruct a walkway or window, and use the cuttings only if you can provide suitable propagation conditions. Keep the basket secure and make sure the plant cannot brush against a hot light fixture, fan, or heater.

Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach identifies spider plant as adaptable to different indoor conditions and attractive in hanging baskets. That combination makes it a practical choice when you want a softer, arching display rather than a single long vine. Read the extension overview at Iowa State’s low-maintenance houseplant guidance.
Adaptable does not mean location-proof. Observe the plant after it is hung: foliage should remain firm and evenly colored, and the container should dry between waterings without staying saturated. If the plant declines, reassess the actual light and drainage before adding fertilizer or watering more often.
The ASPCA’s entry for spider plant classifies it as non-toxic to dogs and cats. That status applies to those species and to the plant identified in the entry; it is not a blanket approval for every household animal or every plant with a similar appearance. Check the current entry at ASPCA’s spider-plant listing when pets are part of the decision.
Heartleaf philodendron: a conditional option
The University of New Hampshire Extension says many philodendron types grow indoors with little care. That broad statement does not provide a complete hanging-plant care profile for every philodendron, nor does it establish pet safety for a particular species or cultivar. If you choose one, record the exact botanical name from the label and verify its light, watering, mature size, and animal-safety information individually. UNH’s guidance is available at “Which foliage houseplants are easiest to grow?”.

Do not assume that “philodendron” is a sufficient safety identification. The ASPCA lists philodendron among plants that may be problematic for pets; consult the current species information and keep the plant inaccessible if you cannot confirm the identification. The broader pet-safety context is explained by the ASPCA’s houseplant safety guidance.

Why there is no responsible, sourced ranking of 13 plants here
The available authoritative material supports detailed recommendations for pothos and spider plant, plus a general low-care observation about philodendrons. It does not provide comparable light, watering, trailing, and safety data for 13 separate plants. Ranking 13 names as “easiest” would create false precision and could lead you to put a plant in conditions it cannot tolerate.
When you see a longer list elsewhere, check whether each entry supplies the same minimum information:
- the exact species or cultivar, not only a common name;
- the light level recommended for the hanging location;
- how to judge watering, rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule;
- whether the plant naturally trails, arches, or merely has flexible stems;
- pet-safety information for the species and the animals in your home; and
- the source and date of the information.
If an entry lacks those details, treat it as an idea for further checking, not as a verified easy-care recommendation.

Choose the plant for the exact hanging location
1. Inspect light at plant height
Stand where the basket will hang and observe the light at the leaves’ height during the part of the day you expect the room to be used. A window-facing shelf may be bright while a ceiling corner several feet away is substantially dimmer. Direct sun through glass can also be much harsher than bright light reflected into the room.
For pothos, prioritize bright, indirect light to preserve the best leaf color. Spider plant is the more adaptable of the two documented choices, but still needs enough light to maintain healthy growth. If you cannot describe the location as bright, choose the plant only after you can adjust the position or provide suitable supplemental lighting.
2. Check access before mounting
You must be able to reach the pot safely to test the soil, remove dead leaves, rotate the container, and inspect for pests. A plant that requires a ladder every time you water is not low maintenance in practice. Leave enough clearance for trailing stems so they do not catch on doors, blinds, fans, or people passing beneath.
3. Confirm drainage
Use a container with a drainage route and protect the surface below it. After watering, excess should be able to leave the pot instead of collecting around the roots. Because a hanging basket can drip onto furniture or flooring, test the arrangement before placing it over electronics, books, or an irreplaceable surface.

4. Match the mature shape to the room
Pothos tends to produce vines that lengthen over time; spider plant forms arching foliage and can produce offsets. Decide whether you want a long cascade, a rounded silhouette, or clearance around a window. Pruning is easier when the plant is accessible, so do not mount a vigorous trailer where trimming would require moving heavy furniture.
Light, water, and habit at a glance
| Plant | Evidence-supported light guidance | Watering approach | Hanging habit | Pet-safety note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pothos | Bright, indirect light; lower light may reduce desirable leaf qualities. | Water when the soil is dry; fertilize occasionally. | Vining and suitable for hanging. | Check the current species entry before placing it where pets can reach it. |
| Spider plant | Adaptable to different indoor conditions; assess the actual site rather than assuming any light is sufficient. | Use the plant’s soil condition and drainage to decide when to water; no universal interval is established here. | Attractive in hanging baskets, with arching foliage. | ASPCA lists spider plant as non-toxic to dogs and cats. |
| Heartleaf philodendron | Species-specific information required; the general statement that many philodendrons grow indoors with little care is not a complete profile. | Verify the exact species’ instructions. | Confirm the labeled species and mature form before hanging. | Verify the exact species; ASPCA identifies philodendron among potentially problematic plants. |
A practical care routine after hanging
- Record the installation date and location. Note which window or light source is nearby so you can identify changes if growth slows.
- Inspect the medium before each watering. Touch the soil surface and, when possible, check farther down in the pot. Water according to the plant’s guidance and current dryness, not a fixed reminder alone.
- Drain completely. Do not leave the container standing in collected water. Empty any catch tray that remains wet after watering.
- Rotate the pot periodically. Turning it helps prevent one-sided growth when light arrives from a single direction.
- Check stems and leaf undersides. Look for insects, sticky residue, discoloration, or sudden leaf drop. Early detection is easier when the basket is at eye level during maintenance.
- Trim only for a reason. Remove damaged growth, clear blocked pathways, or shorten stems that have outgrown the space. Avoid repeated pruning merely to force a shape the plant does not naturally maintain.
Troubleshooting common failures
Leaves lose color or variegation
For pothos, first reconsider light. The plant may survive in a dim position while losing the leaf qualities that made it attractive. Move it toward bright, indirect light and watch new growth rather than expecting old leaves to recolor.
Soil stays wet for a long time
Check drainage, pot size, and the amount of water applied. A hanging location with little airflow or low light can dry more slowly than a nearby shelf. Do not compensate for slow drying by adding another watering on a calendar schedule.
Leaves wilt soon after watering
Verify that water is reaching the root zone and that the container is not channeling water around a dry root ball. Confirm the plant’s light and temperature conditions, then reassess the soil before watering again.
The plant is unsafe to reach
Relocate it or block access rather than relying on a warning label alone. For pets, identify the exact plant and consult the current ASPCA entry or another qualified veterinary poison-control resource. Spider plant’s dog-and-cat classification does not establish safety for other animals.

If you want more than the documented choices above, use this 13-point checklist for each individual plant before buying:
- Write down the botanical name on the label.
- Confirm that the plant naturally trails or arches in a container.
- Measure or observe light at the intended hanging height.
- Find species-specific light guidance from an extension service, botanical garden, or equivalent authority.
- Find species-specific watering guidance.
- Check whether the container and location allow excess water to drain.
- Check the plant’s expected mature width and stem length.
- Confirm that you can reach the pot without unsafe climbing.
- Look up pet safety for the exact species.
- Consider every animal in the home, not only dogs and cats.
- Plan how you will inspect leaves and stems.
- Decide where trimmings and fallen leaves will go.
- Reassess the choice after installation if growth, color, or soil moisture does not match the guidance.
This process produces a genuinely easy plant for your room instead of a generic list that treats every hanging basket as the same environment.
