The AllPeopleQuilt Easy Triangles Table Runner is a template-cut design of alternating solid and striped equilateral triangles arranged in diagonal rows. It finishes at 22 × 47 inches. The pattern was published June 14, 2013, and is credited to the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors, quiltmaker Laura Boehnke, and inspiration from “Flying Solo,” a quilt by collector Julie Hendricksen. See the pattern and download its templates.

What you need for this pattern

The stated fabric amounts assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric. Pattern measurements include 1/4-inch seam allowances.

You will also need the downloadable A, B, and C templates. The instructions use rotary cutting, but they do not require a 60-degree ruler. A rotary cutter, mat, sewing machine, thread, iron, and pins are practical supplies; the pattern does not present a complete mandatory notions checklist.

Cut and organize the triangles

  1. Download and make the A, B, and C templates from the AllPeopleQuilt project page. Keep them with the pattern so you can identify each shape during cutting.

  2. For Pattern A triangles, rotary-cut 4 × 42-inch strips first, then place the template to cut triangles across the width. Follow the pattern’s cutting chart for all pieces and fabrics.

  3. If you want to match the pictured arrangement, pair stripe and solid fabrics before cutting. Put the pieces for each of rows 1–13 in a separately labeled resealable bag; this helps keep the many triangles in sequence.

Sew the rows without stretching the bias edges

The triangle edges are bias edges and can stretch. Sew the triangles into the pattern’s diagonal rows while keeping the grain line along each row’s long edges. The pattern recommends this orientation to minimize stretching and make row-to-row joining easier.

Most central rows, rows 4–10, each use five solid Pattern A triangles and five stripe Pattern A triangles. Use the row diagram and the labeled bags to preserve the intended alternation and orientation; do not assume every row has the same piece count.

Join the rows and add the border

  1. Join the completed rows in the pattern’s order. The assembled center should measure 18 × 43 inches, including seam allowances.

  2. Cut the specified solid blue 2-1/2-inch border strips. Piece them into two 2-1/2 × 43-inch strips and two 2-1/2 × 22-inch strips.

  3. Sew the long borders to the runner first, then add the short borders. Press the seams toward the border.

Layer, quilt, and bind

Layer the pieced top with batting and backing, baste the layers, and quilt as desired. Finish by binding with the solid blue fabric, following the pattern’s binding instructions. The stated backing and batting amounts are based on this pattern’s 22 × 47-inch finished size; recalculate if you change the dimensions or use fabric of a different width.

How this pattern differs from other triangle runners

“Triangle table runner” describes several distinct constructions. Their tools, sizes, and fabric requirements are not interchangeable.

Pattern Triangle method and size Tools or materials called out
AllPeopleQuilt: Easy Triangles Table Runner Template-cut equilateral triangles in diagonal rows; 22 × 47 inches Downloadable A, B, and C templates; quantities listed above
WeAllSew / BERNINA: Equilateral Triangle Table Runner Separate equilateral-triangle project; 41.5 × 14.5 inches 18 different 10-inch fabric squares, a Good Measure 60-degree triangle ruler, backing, batting, and a 12-inch spinning rotary mat
Shabby Fabrics: Floating Peaks runner tutorial A different ruler-based runner project Creative Grids 60 Degree 8.5-inch Triangle Ruler; the page says the featured kit may no longer be available
Nancy Zieman Productions: No-Hassle Triangles Summer Table Runner Half-square and quarter-square triangle units with column strips; 21 × 56-1/2 inches No-Hassle Triangles Gauge and ruler are listed among the tools

A 60-degree triangle ruler can support other triangle-cutting approaches, but it is optional for the AllPeopleQuilt pattern, which directs you to use downloadable templates. Choose the instructions and tools for one project rather than combining its dimensions or cutting requirements with another design.
