There is no universally greenest architectural membrane. The responsible choice is the product and assembly that meet the project’s structural, daylight, solar-control, thermal, maintenance and service requirements with the lowest documented life-cycle impact. Compare the complete system—membrane, steel or cable supports, fixings, pneumatic equipment, replacement plan and end-of-life route—not a material name in isolation.
Membrane architecture can reduce the amount of stiffening material because a thin skin weighs far less than many conventional enclosure components. That is a potential system advantage, not proof that every tensile roof, façade or canopy has a lower footprint. Polymer membranes are generally fossil-derived, and the environmental result depends on the exact formulation, layer count, geometry, climate and service strategy.

What an eco-friendly membrane actually means
In architecture, an eco-friendly membrane is not simply a fabric advertised as recyclable or a transparent foil described as lightweight. It is a membrane system whose required function is delivered with a demonstrably reasonable impact over its full life cycle.
That assessment starts with the brief. A canopy that only sheds rain has different requirements from a conditioned atrium roof. A translucent façade may need external shading, an insulated cushion or mechanical ventilation to control heat gain. If those supporting measures are omitted from the comparison, the membrane can look efficient on paper while the completed building performs poorly.

The 2016 review by Carol Monticelli and Alessandra Zanelli notes that typical building membranes are polymer-based materials originating from fossil fuel. The authors also identify a gap between research studies and real architectural practice and call for eco-efficiency decisions to begin in the early design phases. In practical terms, sustainability must be set while the geometry, support structure and environmental strategy are still changeable.
Which membrane families are used in architecture?
The principal families discussed in the published review are PES/PVC, fiberglass/PTFE, PTFE fabric and ETFE foil. They are not interchangeable products: each combines a different substrate, coating, thickness, joining method and support concept.

PES/PVC coated polyester
Polyester fabric coated with polyvinyl chloride is widely specified for tensile roofs, façades and canopies. Taiyo describes PVC-coated polyester as a common, cost-effective option available as watertight fabric or open mesh. The same brochure describes photocatalytic titanium-dioxide variants. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent proof of lower life-cycle impact, self-cleaning performance or superior durability.
The fabric can be selected where a project needs a flexible, tensioned weather skin or a mesh that admits air and daylight. The design team still has to account for coating chemistry, welds, edge details, cleaning access and eventual separation or recycling.
Fiberglass/PTFE and PTFE fabric
Fiberglass-based fabrics coated with polytetrafluoroethylene are used where a dimensionally stable, durable membrane is required. The environmental case depends on the actual specification: reinforcement weight, coating quantity, attachment details, expected service period and what happens when the fabric is removed. A generic label such as PTFE fabric is not a functional unit for an environmental comparison.

ETFE foil
ETFE is a fluoropolymer supplied as foil. Novum describes two distinct arrangements: sealed air-filled pillows made from two, three or four welded layers, and a tensioned single-skin arrangement. These assemblies behave differently. A cushion needs pneumatic equipment and a controlled air supply; a single skin does not have the same build-up or thermal behavior.
Novum characterizes single-skin thermal performance as nominal and indicates that shading may be provided with colored, solid or translucent materials. Therefore, a transparent ETFE roof should never be assumed to provide adequate solar control or insulation without a project-specific calculation.
Taiyo’s TensoSky brochure describes ETFE as lightweight, durable, recyclable and usable in single or multiple layers. Those claims should be treated as supplier statements. Ask for evidence that applies to the specified product, layer arrangement, climate, warranty and recovery route.
What the published impact figures show—and why they cannot rank materials
The 2016 comparison matrix is useful for showing the spread of reported results, but it combines different studies, functional units and configurations. It is not a current environmental product declaration and should not be used to declare ETFE, PVC or PTFE the winner.
| Material or assembly | Embodied energy reported | Global warming potential reported | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| PES/PVC | 96–113.3 MJ/kg; 54–68 MJ/m² | 4.6–6.13 kg CO₂e/kg; 2.2–4.1 kg CO₂e/m² | Values in the Monticelli and Zanelli 2016 matrix; units and source studies differ. |
| ETFE, sources combined | 26–337.3 MJ/kg | Not stated as one comparable range in the matrix | The wide span reflects different cited sources and should not be treated as a product rating. |
| ETFE, five-layer cushion | 315 MJ/m² | Not stated for this row | Configuration-specific matrix entry. |
| ETFE, three-layer cushion | 326.2 MJ/m² | 89 kg CO₂e/m² and 170 kg CO₂e/m² entries are reported for a three-layer cushion | The matrix contains two GWP entries; the underlying studies and boundaries must be checked. |
Because the figures use both mass and area as functional units, a heavier or lighter design can appear better depending on the denominator. Cushion layer count, membrane tension, support steel, inflation equipment and replacement assumptions can change the result substantially. Use these historical values as a warning about data variability, not as a procurement scorecard.

How to compare two real membrane options
When a project team has actual products to choose between, compare them in the same sequence. Record the answers in the specification so that an attractive marketing claim cannot substitute for missing evidence.
1. Define the required function
- Is the membrane a rain screen, tensile roof, façade, daylighting layer, solar shade or part of a conditioned envelope?
- Is the assembly a tensioned single skin, a fabric with coating, or a multi-layer pneumatic cushion?
- What daylight transmission, glare control, solar-control and acoustic targets apply?
- Which loads govern: wind, snow, maintenance access, drainage, movement or seismic action?
2. Count the whole-system material
Request the membrane mass per square metre and calculate the mass of the complete option. Include primary steel, secondary framing, cables, plates, edge beams, anchors, welds, gutters, access systems and, for cushions, fans, controls and standby equipment. A lightweight skin is only an advantage if the structural concept does not add more material elsewhere.
3. Match life-cycle evidence
Ask for a product-specific environmental product declaration (EPD) and record:
- the declared or functional unit;
- life-cycle modules and system boundary;
- impact categories reported;
- manufacturing location and electricity assumptions;
- transport scenarios;
- expected service life and replacement intervals;
- installation, cleaning and repair assumptions; and
- end-of-life scenarios.
Soprema states that its synthetic membrane EPDs follow EN 15804 and that EPDs support comparison when the conditions are the same. Apply that principle to any supplier: two declarations are comparable only when their units, modules, assumptions and system boundaries align.

4. Model operational performance
For a transparent or translucent assembly, calculate annual solar gains, glare, daylight distribution and heating or cooling demand. For an ETFE cushion, include the actual layer count, air pressure, edge losses and shading strategy. For a mesh or open fabric, document what ventilation and weather protection the building still requires. Never infer good thermal performance from transparency, thinness or low mass.

5. Plan maintenance and replacement
Specify inspection access, cleaning method, repair materials, welding or patching procedures, replacement triggers and safe working loads. Ask the manufacturer for the warranted service period and for evidence from installations with comparable exposure. Sollertia says its façade membranes can be changed without altering attachment systems or the supporting structure; treat that as a system-specific supplier claim and verify that the proposed details genuinely allow independent replacement.
6. Secure an end-of-life route
Obtain a written route for take-back, reuse, recycling or disposal in the project’s country. Identify who removes the membrane, how it is separated from cables and fixings, where it is transported and what proportion is actually recovered. A general statement that a material is recyclable does not prove that a local facility accepts the exact coated fabric or foil, nor that recovery will occur when the building is dismantled.
ETFE cushion, ETFE single skin or coated fabric?
The right choice follows the building function rather than a material preference.

Design strategies that can reduce impact without changing the membrane family
Environmental gains often come from design decisions rather than a material switch.
- Reduce surface area: coordinate the form with the structural grid and drainage so that unnecessary folds, overlaps and secondary skins are eliminated.
- Use the minimum justified layer count: do not specify a three- or four-layer cushion where a two-layer build-up and external shading meet the brief.
- Coordinate supports early: a membrane engineer, structural engineer and environmental modeller should test the skin and support system together.
- Design for replacement: use accessible attachment details and replaceable panels where feasible instead of requiring demolition of the entire support structure.
- Control the sun deliberately: combine transmission data with shading, orientation and ventilation rather than relying on a transparent material to perform every envelope function.
- Protect vulnerable details: drainage, edge clamping and movement joints often determine cleaning frequency and premature replacement.
A practical specification workflow
- Write the performance brief. State geometry, climate, loads, daylight targets, solar-control limits, thermal requirements, fire and code constraints, design life and access provisions.
- Shortlist complete assemblies. Name the fabric or foil, coating, layer count, seams, edge details, supports, inflation equipment and shading components.
- Request evidence. Collect the current EPD, technical data sheet, warranty, maintenance instructions, repair guidance and a location-specific end-of-life statement.
- Normalize the comparison. Convert each option to the same functional unit and compare matching EN 15804 modules or equivalent declared boundaries. Record every service-life and replacement assumption.
- Model the building outcome. Check structural material, daylight, glare, annual energy, fan electricity for cushions, maintenance access and replacement downtime.
- Test the worst credible case. Include soiling, damaged panels, loss of inflation, shading failure, unusual weather and the consequences of delayed repair.
- Put obligations in the contract. Require the delivered product to match the declared formulation and layer count, preserve documentation, provide spare or repair materials and identify the responsible end-of-life contractor.
- Review after installation. Keep as-built quantities, product batch information, commissioning data and maintenance records so a future replacement can be compared on evidence rather than assumptions.
Common claims that need qualification
“ETFE is the greenest option.”
Not established. The published matrix contains widely varying ETFE results, including different cushion configurations, while the review calls for harmonized data. Compare the specified assembly and its supports with a matching EPD.

“The membrane is recyclable, so the project is circular.”
Recyclability is a product attribute, not proof of collection, sorting, transport or actual recycling in the project’s region. Require a documented route and identify who pays for it.
“A self-cleaning coating eliminates maintenance.”
Photocatalytic TiO₂ and similar features are supplier claims. They do not remove the need to inspect seams, drainage, fixings, inflation equipment or safety systems.
“The lightest roof always has the lowest footprint.”
The membrane may be light while the support steel, cables, anchors or equipment are extensive. Compare the complete installed system and its replacement cycle.

Bottom line for architects and owners
Choose an eco-friendly membrane by proving the performance of the whole envelope or tensile structure. Start with function, then compare material and support quantities, harmonized life-cycle data, operational behavior, maintenance, replacement and a real end-of-life route. ETFE, PES/PVC, fiberglass/PTFE and PTFE fabrics can each be appropriate in different assemblies; none is automatically sustainable because of its name, transparency, weight or recyclability claim.
