Yes—Ecoview Plus sunscreen fabric is designed to preserve an outward view while providing a level of daytime privacy. Hunter Douglas Commercial described its 6% and 10% openness versions that way in 2016. That is not a promise that people outside can never see in, and it does not establish privacy after dark. The result depends on openness, fabric colour, daylight on each side of the glass, and the window’s glazing.

ECOVIEW® Plus is a solar-screen fabric specified by Hunter Douglas Limited as PVC-coated fibreglass in a 2 x 2 basket weave. Its 2014 technical sheet reports a 6% average openness factor, with the actual value dependent on colour. A separate Hunter Douglas Commercial product statement published on November 3, 2016, refers to both 6% and 10% openness options. Because those documents are dated, treat the figures as published historical specifications and ask the current manufacturer or supplier for the specification that applies to the fabric being quoted.

The technical sheet identifies the material as a sunscreen for architectural window coverings rather than a transparent curtain or an opaque blackout cloth. The documented formats are roller blinds, Roman shades and panel glide systems. The 2016 description also refers to darks, greys and neutral colours, and says dark fabrics can provide a clear, sharp outward view. It attributes that performance in dark colours to the manufacturer’s Koolblack technology; that is a product claim, not an independent test result. The original sheet also lists item codes, roll dimensions, historical availability through the company and a five-year warranty, but those commercial terms should not be assumed to remain current.

Does it let you see out while people outside cannot see in?
It can make it harder to see into a room during bright daytime conditions, while leaving a usable view out. The manufacturer’s precise wording is “a level of daytime privacy without compromising the view,” not one-way privacy. A screen fabric has openings, so the same weave that permits an outward view also permits some light and visual information in the opposite direction. Whether an observer can make out people or room details depends on the relative brightness, viewing angle, distance and the colour and openness selected.
Daytime privacy is most plausible when the exterior is brighter than the interior. If the room is brightly lit at night and the outside is dark, the visual balance reverses: silhouettes and interior activity may become easier to see from outside. The cited product documents do not establish night-time privacy, so do not specify Ecoview Plus as a stand-alone privacy solution after dark. If evening privacy is important, pair the sunscreen with an opaque roller, curtain or other covering and verify the complete assembly in the actual room.

How openness controls the privacy–view trade-off
Openness is the approximate proportion of the fabric area that is open rather than covered by yarn or coating. It describes the weave, not a guaranteed viewing angle or a percentage chance that a person can be seen. Lower openness generally gives a more closed visual screen; higher openness generally preserves more daylight and view but offers less visual screening. The published references identify these two options:

Do not read “6%” as “94% private” or “10%” as a measured visibility score. Furniture, interior lighting, the observer’s position and the window’s height can matter as much as the nominal openness factor. Obtain a full-size sample and view it from both sides in daytime before approving a large installation.
Why fabric colour changes the experience
Two fabrics with the same nominal openness can look and perform differently because colour changes contrast and the balance of reflected and transmitted light. The 2016 manufacturer statement says dark fabrics produce a clear, sharp outward view. In practice, a dark room-facing surface can reduce the apparent haze caused by reflected interior light, while a lighter colour can make daylight feel brighter. Those are visual-design effects, not a guarantee that every dark colour will look identical in every orientation.

The 2014 sheet reports colour-specific solar and visual values, including solar transmittance (Ts), solar reflectance (Rs), solar absorbance (As), light transmittance (TL), light reflectance (RL) and ultraviolet transmittance (Tuv). For example, it lists Tuv of 5% for Pearl Linen and 6% for White. The same table gives different TL and RL values for individual colours. These are document-reported figures for the specified fabric and test conditions; they are not universal results for every window, room or camera view.

Choose colour with the intended sightline in mind. A sample viewed against a bright sky can appear different from one viewed against trees, neighbouring buildings or a shaded courtyard. Check both the outside view and the room-side appearance with the blind fully lowered, because a colour that looks neutral in a showroom may create a different contrast at the project’s orientation.
Solar control: what the technical numbers actually mean
A sunscreen influences heat and light by transmitting, reflecting or absorbing incoming solar radiation. The technical sheet expresses that relationship as Ts + Rs + As = 100%. Those terms describe the fabric’s treatment of solar energy; they are not interchangeable with openness or with the amount of heat a whole room will gain.
The sheet also reports GTOT, the total solar-energy transmittance or solar heat-gain coefficient for the fabric-and-glazing combination. It states that a lower GTOT indicates greater ability to insulate against solar heat build-up. GTOT therefore belongs to a system: changing the glass, air gap, coating or frame changes the result even when the blind fabric is unchanged. It is not a promise of a particular reduction in energy bills.

These are listed system values for the stated Cumberland-and-glazing combinations. They cannot be transferred to another colour or used without checking whether the project has clear single glass, clear insulating glass, low-E/argon units or reflective glass. Ask the supplier for the current performance table matching the exact fabric colour and glazing build-up.
Fabric construction and published physical data
The 2014 sheet gives a fabric weight of 410 g/m² ± 20 and a thickness of 0.42 mm with a printed tolerance of ± 5 mm. That thickness tolerance appears unusually large relative to the nominal thickness, so the original or current technical document should be checked before these tolerances are used in a specification. The construction is described as PVC-coated fibreglass with a 2 x 2 basket weave. These are material descriptors, not a substitute for checking fire, acoustic, moisture or wind requirements for a particular building.
A similarly named “ecoview plus” sheet from Suntex also describes PVC-coated fibreglass and 6% and 10% openness, but the relationship between that product and Hunter Douglas ECOVIEW® Plus is not established. Do not merge its values, warranty or availability statements with the Hunter Douglas documents without written confirmation of product identity.
Selecting a blind format for the window

These formats are the applications identified by the manufacturer; the cited documents do not provide a current installation manual. A fabric choice cannot correct poor measuring. Confirm the opening width and height at several points, the mounting surface, handle projection and any required side channels with the installer.

A practical specification process
- Define the privacy condition. Decide whether the requirement is daytime screening only or privacy after dark. If evening privacy is required, include an opaque secondary covering in the brief.
- Record the glazing build-up. Identify single or double glazing, low-E coatings, gas fill and reflective layers. GTOT values are valid only for the corresponding fabric-and-glazing combination.
- Compare 6% and 10% samples. View each from inside and outside in daylight, then repeat with the room lights on after sunset if possible. Judge privacy, glare and the actual view rather than relying on the openness number.
- Choose colour with the sightline. Compare dark, grey and neutral options against the real exterior background. Request the colour-specific TL, RL, Tuv and solar figures for the selected fabric.
- Select the operating format. Match roller, Roman or panel glide hardware to window size, access, stack space and the desired control position.
- Verify current documentation. Obtain the current technical sheet, warranty, roll dimensions, item code, fire information and availability. The 2014 and 2016 documents are historical references, not current commercial terms.
- Approve a full-size mock-up. Check sightlines from likely outside positions, glare on screens, nighttime silhouettes and the finished colour before releasing a multi-window order.
Cleaning and day-to-day care
The 2014 care guidance is deliberately simple, but it is also dated. It recommends low-suction vacuuming to remove dust and a sponge with soapy water for stains. After spot cleaning, leave the blind fully down until it is dry. Do not substitute abrasive pads, solvents or high-pressure spraying unless the current supplier specifically permits them; coatings and edges can be damaged by aggressive cleaning.
- Lower the blind completely so the fabric is supported and accessible.
- Use a vacuum at low suction with a suitable brush attachment, moving gently across the surface.
- For a stain, use a clean sponge and mild soapy water rather than saturating the roll or headrail.
- Leave the blind down until dry, then inspect for marks, edge fraying or tracking problems.
Follow the current supplier’s care sheet if it differs from these 2014 directions, especially for motorised systems, hem bars and side channels.
What the evidence can—and cannot—prove
The available evidence is a manufacturer product description and a technical sheet, not an independent field study of view quality or privacy. No cited source measures how often an outside observer can identify a person, compares rooms at different light levels or guarantees a particular “wonderful view.” The defensible conclusion is narrower: Ecoview Plus is offered in sunscreen weaves intended to retain an outward view while providing some daytime privacy, with results shaped by openness, colour and glazing.
