The exact Edwardian staircase listing named in the headline cannot currently be specified from the available S & A Stairs and Architecture & Design pages. Those sources do not establish its appearance, timber, dimensions, balustrade, price, lead time or availability. Treat the title as a lead and obtain a written specification from S & A Stairs before designing around it, ordering it or describing it as a period-faithful stair.
What can be confirmed about the Edwardian listing
The available Architecture & Design material does not identify a product page with a complete Edwardian specification. In practical terms, there is no verified basis for stating that this particular stair is straight, curved or spiral; that it uses a named timber; or that it includes a particular newel, balustrade, handrail, finish or landing arrangement.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is also no confirmed price, dimensional schedule, production date, installation territory, stock status or lead time for the title-level offer. These details can change with the project, so a current quotation and drawing set are more reliable than a catalogue description or an old image.
That uncertainty matters most when a stair is being used as a fixed design element. The floor opening, headroom, landing position, structural support and balustrade geometry must all work together. Do not reserve an opening, order related joinery or promise a completion date until S & A has confirmed those items for your address and project stage.

What S & A Stairs says about its capabilities
On its official homepage, S & A Stairs describes itself as a fourth-generation family business founded in South Yarra, Melbourne, in 1920. The company says it handles detailing, design, manufacturing, timber, glass, plaster, steel and logistics in-house, and provides a project-enquiry route at sastairs.com.au. These are company statements about its organisation, not specifications for the Edwardian stair.
The homepage also states, “We have a single minded focus on building the best product.” That is the company’s own positioning rather than an independently measured performance claim. Use the enquiry channel to ask which of those capabilities apply to the stair you are considering and which work would be carried out by project partners.

S & A publishes project pages with unusually specific component information, but the examples currently available are different projects and should not be substituted for an Edwardian schedule.
| Project or source | Details actually published | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Edward Street | Described as best suited to modern homes; 65 mm Victorian Ash treads, 78 mm Victorian Ash stringers, a 65 mm board Victorian Ash landing, toughened-glass balustrade and stainless-steel handrail. | Use only as an example of the level of component detail S & A may publish. It is not identified as Edwardian. |
| York Street | Victorian Ash and pressed-glass staircase, with component information on the project page. | It demonstrates another material and balustrade combination, not the contents of the Edwardian listing. |
| Architecture & Design supplier listing | S & A is described as making custom curved and spiral staircases for residential and commercial buildings. | This establishes a broad capability only. It does not show that the Edwardian stair is curved or spiral. |
The Edward Street figures are useful when asking for a drawing: request tread, stringer and landing thicknesses in the same unambiguous format, together with the timber species and finish. They cannot be carried across to another job without written confirmation.
Questions to resolve before you treat it as an Edwardian stair
Ask for answers tied to a drawing or quotation rather than relying on a project photograph. A complete specification should address:
Rank #2
- Identity: the exact project name, revision and date of the listing or quotation, so you know which design is being discussed.
- Geometry: straight, quarter-turn, half-turn, helical, curved or another arrangement; total rise; going; pitch; number of risers; landing sizes; and the required floor opening.
- Headroom and structure: the headroom envelope, trimming requirements, support points and any steel or plasterwork needed around the stair.
- Materials: timber species, grade, moisture condition, veneer or solid construction, glass type, metal grade and the finish system.
- Balustrade: spindle, panel, glass or mixed construction; post and handrail profiles; fixing method; and how the design will meet the applicable building requirements.
- Interfaces: how the stair meets existing floors, skirtings, walls, doors, architraves and the upper landing.
- Manufacture and installation: what is made in the factory, what arrives site-finished, who installs it, and what access and protection the site needs.
- Programme: drawing approval date, manufacturing window, delivery sequence, installation duration and the events that could move those dates.
- Commercial terms: itemised price, taxes, delivery, cranage or special access, variations, deposit, payment stages, warranty and repair obligations.
If an answer is not on the quotation, ask S & A to mark it “to be confirmed” and state when it will be resolved. That creates a decision trail without pretending an omitted detail has already been agreed.

How to check whether the design suits a renovation
A renovation has constraints that a new-build drawing may not reveal. Before requesting a final design, measure the existing stairwell and record the finished-floor levels at both ends. Locate joists, beams, pipes, ducts, doors, windows and any wall that cannot move. Photograph the route from the delivery entrance to the stairwell; a beautifully detailed stair can still fail if sections cannot be carried into the house.
Give S & A the existing drawings if they are reliable, but have critical dimensions checked on site. Ask the company to show the proposed floor opening and headroom in plan and section, not only in a perspective image. Confirm how much existing plaster, flooring, skirting and ceiling must be removed and who reinstates it.
For a heritage-sensitive renovation, separate two decisions: visual compatibility and technical replacement. You can request a period-appropriate appearance while still needing a new structural assembly, modern fixings and current safety documentation. Do not describe a stair as an original Edwardian survivor unless its provenance has been independently established; a newly manufactured stair inspired by a period brief is a different claim.
How to check whether it suits a new build
In a new build, the stair can be coordinated before framing and services are fixed. Give the architect, structural engineer and stair manufacturer the same reference levels. Ask for the stair opening, trimming steel or timber, landing support, balustrade fixing zones and finished floor build-ups to be shown on coordinated drawings.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteConfirm who owns each interface. One party may design the stair, another may supply steel, and the builder may form the opening or install the landing. Put tolerances and site-measure dates into the programme. A stair that is “custom” still needs a locked reference dimension before manufacture.
If the design uses glass, pressed glass, plaster or steel, request samples and maintenance information before approval. The Edward Street example shows that S & A can combine Victorian Ash, toughened glass and stainless steel, while the York Street example shows Victorian Ash with pressed glass; neither combination should be assumed for an Edwardian commission.
Using the period label responsibly
“Edwardian” can describe a visual brief, a property’s era, a reproduction style or the name attached to a listing. Those meanings are not interchangeable. Ask the supplier which meaning applies and what evidence supports it.
For a period-fidelity brief, request drawings of the handrail, newels, balusters, stringer edges, tread nosings, landing trim and finish. Ask whether each element is copied from a documented precedent, adapted from a standard profile or designed afresh for the room. Request timber and finish samples under the project’s lighting, because a photograph cannot establish colour, sheen or grain.
Recommended Free Tools
For a contemporary house, decide whether “Edwardian” is meant to govern every visible component or only a few cues. Record those decisions in the schedule so that a modern structural requirement is not mistaken for a departure from the approved appearance.

What the Architecture & Design pages do—and do not—show
The Architecture & Design supplier page at architectureanddesign.com.au/product/curved-and-spiral-staircases-from-slattery-and-acq presents S & A in the broader category of custom curved and spiral staircases for residential and commercial buildings. That is useful evidence that bespoke geometry is part of the company’s described capability. It is not evidence that an Edwardian item has a curved or spiral plan.
A separate Architecture & Design page concerns a Georgian staircase: architectureanddesign.com.au/editorial/product-news/georgian-staircase-available-from-slattery-acqurof. Georgian and Edwardian are different labels, and that page should not be used to supply missing Edwardian details. The distinction is especially important when a renovation brief depends on period accuracy.
A practical enquiry sequence
- Send the brief: include property type, location, renovation or new-build status, finished-floor levels, photographs, drawings and the desired period reference.
- Request an initial feasibility check: ask whether the available opening and access route can accommodate the proposed geometry.
- Receive a measured proposal: require plan, elevation and section drawings with dimensions, materials, balustrade arrangement and interfaces.
- Resolve samples and approvals: inspect timber, glass, metal, plaster and finish samples; record the selected products and sheen.
- Coordinate structure and services: have the architect, engineer, builder and stair designer sign off the opening, supports, headroom and landing.
- Obtain the itemised quotation: check inclusions, exclusions, delivery, installation, taxes, variations, warranty and payment stages.
- Approve manufacture only after the site measure: ensure the final dimensions reflect actual finished levels and documented tolerances.
- Plan delivery and protection: confirm section sizes, lifting route, storage conditions, floor protection and responsibility for damage.
- Close out the installation: collect care instructions, finish references, compliance documents and the agreed process for defects or later adjustments.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a title is a complete specification
A headline can identify a style or marketing category without stating the buildable dimensions. Treat it as the start of an enquiry and ask for the current drawing set.
Borrowing details from a neighbouring project
Victorian Ash, toughened glass and stainless steel are documented for Edward Street, not for the Edwardian listing. Pressed glass is documented for York Street, not for every S & A stair. Keep each project’s facts attached to its own name.
Reading capability as inclusion
A supplier described as making curved and spiral stairs may still quote a straight or turned design for your project. Capability tells you what can be discussed; the quotation tells you what is included.

Approving from an image alone
Images hide floor build-ups, fixing zones, clearances and access constraints. Require dimensioned plans and sections before approval.
Leaving the period brief unrecorded
Words such as “Edwardian” can mean different things to the owner, architect and maker. Attach reference images, profile sketches, sample approvals and exclusions to the contract.

Ordering before interfaces are coordinated
Stair manufacture should follow agreement on finished levels, opening size, structural support and service routes. Otherwise a late change can affect both the stair and surrounding joinery.
What to request in the final information pack
- Approved plan, elevation and section drawings with revision numbers.
- Dimensioned schedule for treads, risers, stringers, landings, posts and handrails.
- Timber, glass, metal, plaster and coating specifications, including sample approvals.
- Structural support and fixing details coordinated with the engineer and builder.
- Installation sequence, access requirements, protection measures and site responsibilities.
- Itemised quotation, programme, variation procedure, warranty and care instructions.
- Any compliance or certification documents supplied for the selected construction.
Keep this pack with the renovation or building contract. It gives you a precise reference if a component changes, a finish is damaged or a later owner needs to repair the stair.
Bottom line for a prospective buyer
S & A Stairs has documented experience in detailed, custom stair manufacture and publishes component-level information for selected projects. The available pages do not, however, establish the design or specification of the Edwardian stair named in the headline. Contact S & A through its official project-enquiry route, provide the measured project information, and make the supplier confirm geometry, materials, interfaces, programme and price in writing before you rely on the listing.
