Eid al-Ghadir is observed on 18 Dhu al-Hijjah, the Islamic lunar-calendar date that changes on the Gregorian calendar each year. It commemorates a reported declaration by the Prophet Muhammad about Ali at Ghadir Khumm. Shia Muslims understand the declaration as affirming Ali’s authority and succession; Muslims interpret the key word mawla differently.

What is Eid al-Ghadir?

Eid al-Ghadir is a Muslim observance commemorating an event said to have taken place at Ghadir Khumm as Muhammad returned from the Farewell Pilgrimage. The traditional date given for the reported event is 18 Dhu al-Hijjah 10 AH. The account and its significance are part of religious tradition; the available sources do not establish the historical authenticity of every version of the report.

The observance is especially significant in Shia Islam. A 2018–2019 Shap religious-festivals calendar describes the announcement as Muhammad appointing Ali as his successor in the Shia understanding, and notes Ghadir Khumm’s particular significance in Ismaili tradition. That calendar explains community meaning, but it is not a current guide to Gregorian dates.

When is Eid al-Ghadir?

Eid al-Ghadir falls on 18 Dhu al-Hijjah each year. Because the Hijri calendar is lunar, its Gregorian date shifts annually. The exact Gregorian date for a given year can also depend on the local calendar or moon-sighting practice, so check a trusted local Islamic calendar for the date observed in your area.

What happened at Ghadir Khumm?

In the traditional account, Muhammad addressed people at Ghadir Khumm on his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage and made a declaration about Ali. Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi’s Shia-perspective study renders the reported words: “Whoever’s master (mawla) I am, this Ali is also his master.” This is Rizvi’s rendering of the report, not an independently verified verbatim transcript.

The meaning of the declaration is disputed. Shia Muslims understand it as establishing Ali’s authority and succession. Other interpretations do not necessarily read it as an appointment to succeed Muhammad. The Arabic word mawla can be rendered in different ways, including “master,” “leader” or “friend”; the choice matters because it shapes how the statement’s implications are understood.

Why do Shia Muslims celebrate Eid al-Ghadir?

For Shia Muslims, Ghadir Khumm is a pivotal event because they understand Muhammad’s words as affirming Ali’s leadership after him. The holiday therefore commemorates more than the reported gathering: it expresses a religious understanding of Ali’s place in the community and the succession to Muhammad.

Accounts and practices can differ among Muslim communities. The Shia interpretation should not be presented as a consensus interpretation shared by all Muslims. For a fuller account of the Shia perspective, Al-Islam.org hosts a 66-page study that includes a chapter by Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi on Ghadir Khumm.

How do people observe Eid al-Ghadir?

Customs vary. Descriptions of Eid al-Ghadir include religious gatherings, prayers and sermons, as well as congratulations, charitable acts, gift-giving and sharing food or sweets. These are practices reported in some communities, not a universal checklist followed by every Muslim or every Shia community.
