ElasticoFarm’s S-LAB in Turin makes an industrial production building feel approachable without disguising its restricted purpose. The approximately 2,000-square-metre complex uses 69 custom precast-concrete panels in five iron-oxide pinks, interspersed with translucent polycarbonate. The concrete gives the exterior a patterned, weighty presence; the polycarbonate admits daylight while keeping passersby from looking directly into the facility. Skylights and internal courtyards extend that controlled daylight strategy into the research labs.
S-LAB is not a public warehouse. It is a production complex on the Turin campus of Italy’s National Institute of Nuclear Physics, used to make machinery and precision instruments for the research agency. Azure Magazine’s March 3, 2022 feature identifies Stefano Pujatti as an ElasticoFarm co-founder and quotes his aim: “We wanted the building to complement rather than impose, to make a welcoming statement, not push people away.” Azure Magazine describes the project here.

What S-LAB is—and why it is called a warehouse
The word “warehouse” in the feature’s title describes the building’s broad industrial character, not its public use. S-LAB supports research production: it makes the machinery and precision instruments required by the National Institute of Nuclear Physics. Its setting is the institute’s Turin campus, so the building belongs to a working scientific site rather than a retail, storage or visitor-oriented development.
Azure Magazine reports a total area of approximately 2,000 square metres. That figure describes the complex as a whole; it is not a measured floor-area schedule for individual laboratories, workshops or service spaces. The same feature presents S-LAB as “an important building in an important location,” a status that helped shape the decision to give a utilitarian facility a deliberate civic presence rather than leave it as an anonymous shed.
The design problem: welcome without public access
ElasticoFarm’s stated brief was a visual and social one. S-LAB needed to read as a serious, controlled research facility, but its exterior did not need to look hostile. Pujatti’s formulation—complement rather than impose—explains why the building’s warmth comes from material, color and daylight rather than from decorative additions.

That is a reported design intention, not a claim about security performance. The article does not provide access-control specifications, blast ratings, surveillance details or measured resistance data, so the façade should be understood as communicating a boundary visually rather than proving a particular level of protection.
Façade materials and their stated roles
| Element | What the project uses | Role described for S-LAB |
|---|---|---|
| Precast concrete | 69 panels, each reported as 2.2 metres high and 20 centimetres thick; lengths range from six to 10 metres | Creates the colored outer pattern and, in some locations, extends beyond the perimeter and contributes to vertical support |
| Iron-oxide color | Five pink shades, from pastel pink to deep rusty red | Gives the otherwise industrial envelope a warm, varied visual identity |
| Translucent polycarbonate | Panels interspersed with the concrete | Brings daylight inside while obscuring direct views from people passing outside |
| Roof and internal daylight devices | Skylights and internal courtyards | Contribute to the controlled environments described for the research laboratories |
| Structure behind the façade | A separate structure supports the roof and adds reinforcement | Works with the projecting concrete elements rather than leaving the visible panels to perform every structural task |
These are the functions Azure Magazine assigns to the elements in this particular building. They should not be read as a general material-performance comparison: the feature publishes no thermal, acoustic, energy, daylight-level or environmental measurements.

How the five pinks are made
Iron oxide sets the palette
The concrete is colored with varying amounts of iron oxide. The result is five shades that move from pastel pink to a deep, rusty red. Because the color is incorporated into the precast material, the façade is conceived as a set of colored structural-scale pieces rather than as one uniformly painted wall. The feature does not identify the exact pigment formulation, mix design, curing method or surface treatment.
The color pattern is planned, not random
ElasticoFarm planned the panel layout in relation to the site and natural light. One explicit rule governs the composition: adjacent panels cannot share the same color. That constraint keeps neighboring pieces visually distinct and prevents a long run of identical pink from flattening the elevation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The result is a controlled variation rather than a conventional repeating stripe. The five-value palette gives the façade enough difference to register at the scale of the campus, while the adjacency rule prevents the color changes from becoming arbitrary. Azure Magazine does not publish the elevation drawings or a panel-by-panel color schedule, so the exact sequence around the building remains undocumented in the feature.
Color does more than decorate
On S-LAB, color is tied to the way the concrete panels are assembled. The pinks make the massive precast units legible as individual pieces, and the variation breaks down the apparent scale of a production building. This is an interpretation of the described composition, not a measured visual-impact study; no survey or post-occupancy assessment is reported.
The reported panel dimensions and construction logic
Azure Magazine gives substantial dimensions for the façade units: each of the 69 panels is approximately 2.2 metres high and 20 centimetres thick, while individual lengths range from six to 10 metres. Those numbers are attributed to the magazine’s project description rather than presented here as independently verified construction records.

The feature says the concrete panels extend beyond the perimeter in some places and contribute to vertical support. A structure behind them supports the roof and adds reinforcement. That description indicates a façade designed in relation to the building’s structure, not a thin decorative cladding system simply hung in front of an independent box. It does not, however, provide engineering drawings, connection details, reinforcement schedules or load calculations.
Why translucent polycarbonate is paired with concrete
The opaque concrete and translucent polycarbonate solve different problems on the same envelope. Concrete supplies the patterned, solid face that gives S-LAB its recognizable pink identity. Polycarbonate is inserted between those heavier pieces to bring daylight into the building while obscuring views from people outside.
That distinction matters for a research-production facility. The laboratories need usable interior light, but the project is not presented as a transparent public display. A translucent layer can soften the boundary without turning workspaces into windows onto the campus. The feature does not state the polycarbonate’s brand, thickness, panel profile, light-transmission percentage, insulation value or fire classification, so no product-equivalency claim can be made from the description.
Skylights and courtyards bring daylight deeper inside
Daylight is not limited to the perimeter wall. Azure Magazine identifies skylights and internal courtyards as part of the building’s strategy for the controlled environments of the research labs. Together with the translucent façade panels, these openings suggest a sequence of filtered light: some arrives through the envelope, while some enters from above or from spaces carved into the plan.
The source does not publish illuminance readings, glare studies, energy models or evidence that the devices meet a particular laboratory standard. It is therefore accurate to say that skylights and courtyards contribute to the described lab environments, but not to assign them a quantified daylight or energy performance.

How the façade reads from outside
At campus scale
The pink palette gives an otherwise industrial volume a clear identity. Five related colors can be recognized as one family, while the rule against matching adjacent panels keeps the surface active. This combination makes the building noticeable without relying on a single bright accent or an applied sign.
At the panel scale
The dimensions make each unit architectural rather than ornamental. A panel up to 10 metres long and 2.2 metres high reads as a substantial piece of the building’s order. The 20-centimetre thickness reinforces that impression, especially where panels project beyond the perimeter. Their size also explains why the composition depends on planning: a mistake in sequence would occupy a large portion of an elevation.
At the boundary
Translucent inserts interrupt the solid pink field. They signal that the wall is not an impenetrable bunker, yet they do not offer the direct visual access of clear glazing. This is the visual balance the feature attributes to the project: a recognizable boundary that does not push people away.
What painters and color planners can take from S-LAB
S-LAB is a specific institutional building, not a recipe that can be transferred without adaptation. Still, its façade offers useful color-planning principles for anyone working with large painted or pigmented surfaces.
Use a narrow family with real value changes
The project stays within pink, but the five shades move from pale to rusty. A limited hue family avoids visual noise; differences in value and saturation provide the variation. For a painted wall, the equivalent exercise would be to establish a small, documented range before assigning colors to bays, panels or elevations.

Set adjacency rules before placing color
“No identical neighbors” is a simple rule that produces consistency across a complex surface. It is more reliable than choosing colors intuitively panel by panel. A painter or designer could map the surface as a grid, label each color, and check every shared edge before production.
Relate color to changing light
ElasticoFarm’s layout was planned in relation to natural light and the site. A pink that reads softly on a shaded elevation may appear more saturated in direct sun. The project description does not provide colorimetric testing, so any new project should make its own sample boards and review them in the actual orientation and weather conditions.
Let material and color reinforce each other
Because the S-LAB colors are integrated into precast concrete, the material’s mass and the palette arrive together. On a painted project, the same principle means choosing a finish whose texture, sheen and maintenance behavior support the intended color effect. S-LAB does not establish a particular paint product or maintenance cycle, so those decisions remain project-specific.

What the feature does not establish
- The official completion date is not identified.
- The local producer that manufactured the precast panels is not named.
- No detailed construction documentation, procurement information or panel-by-panel drawings are published.
- No measured energy, thermal, acoustic, daylight or environmental performance results are given.
- No security-performance rating is supplied; the “not fortress-like” description refers to visual intent.
- No polycarbonate manufacturer, product model or specification is identified.
These limits matter when using S-LAB as a reference. The project is well documented as a design idea and as a set of reported façade dimensions, but it is not a technical specification package from which another building can be copied directly.
Why S-LAB feels warm without becoming decorative
The building’s warmth comes from coordination. The iron-oxide colors soften the visual reading of precast concrete; the no-matching-neighbors rule gives the elevation rhythm; the projecting panels make the façade feel substantial; and translucent polycarbonate, skylights and courtyards keep the interior connected to daylight without making it publicly exposed. None of those moves requires the building to pretend it is something other than a research-production facility.
That is the central achievement described by Azure Magazine. S-LAB remains an important working building on a scientific campus, with the scale and solidity expected of a production complex, while its pink concrete and filtered openings make its boundary more welcoming. The feature’s evidence supports that architectural reading; it does not claim a quantified performance advantage or provide enough technical information to specify an identical system elsewhere.
