Elevator Safety Myths Explained: What to Do When a Lift Stops, Shakes or Misbehaves

A broken rope does not automatically mean free fall, and a stalled elevator is not a cue to climb out. Here are five common elevator myths, the safety systems behind them and the correct action for passengers.

Most alarming elevator stories confuse a protective shutdown with a catastrophic failure. A broken hoisting rope does not automatically mean free fall; a stopped car is usually a place to wait for trained help, not a car to escape from; repeatedly pressing a hall button cannot reliably speed service; and passenger elevators generally should not be used during fires or earthquakes. The safest response is to remain inside a stopped car, use the alarm, phone or intercom, and follow the building’s emergency instructions.

Elevators differ by type, installation, maintenance condition and local code. The explanations below describe common traction-elevator safety arrangements and passenger guidance from major elevator manufacturers, not a guarantee that every lift uses identical hardware or behaves identically.

Five elevator myths at a glance

Claim What is actually true Safe action
“If the cable breaks, the elevator drops like a stone.” Traction lifts use engineered suspension, overspeed detection and braking systems; one failed rope does not by itself create a free fall. Stay in the car and use the emergency communication system if the lift stops.
“The doors can open between floors.” Car and landing doors are interlocked and intended to open when the car is at a landing. Never force a door; call for qualified assistance.
“Jump before the car hits.” Jumping is not a supported protective measure and cannot be timed reliably. Remain still in the car and wait for responders.
“Mashing the call button makes the lift arrive faster.” Repeated presses do not guarantee faster service and can cancel a registered call on some systems. Press once, then wait.
“An elevator is the safest way out during a fire or earthquake.” Emergency conditions can disable, recall or contaminate a lift. Use stairs during a fire and avoid passenger elevators during and after an earthquake unless officials authorize them.

Safety features are designed as a system. Their exact arrangement depends on the elevator and the jurisdiction in which it is installed.

Can an elevator fall if its cable breaks?

Why one rope failure is not the same as free fall

A typical high-rise traction elevator is not suspended by one ordinary rope with no backup. Multiple steel hoisting cables, a counterweight, guide rails, overspeed switches and a car safety device work together. If the car accelerates beyond a set limit, the overspeed system can trigger wedges or another braking mechanism that grips the guide rails attached to the building. The counterweight balances much of the car’s mass and reduces the lifting effort required from the hoisting machine.

Otis describes the historical safety brake developed by Elisha Otis: when a hoisting rope went slack, a spring-loaded mechanism engaged the building’s rails. Modern systems add electronic monitoring, sensors and controls. Otis characterizes contemporary high-rise safety systems as far more advanced than the original device, incorporating computing, sensor technology and modern materials. That is a manufacturer description of system development, not an independent accident-rate finding.

“Virtually impossible” is not the same as physically impossible, and the phrase should not be treated as a promise that every elevator has identical protection. Low-rise traction lifts, hydraulic elevators and specialized installations can use different suspension and stopping arrangements. Inspection, maintenance, modernization and local code compliance also matter.

What a sudden stop usually means

An elevator can stop because a controller detects an unsafe condition, a door circuit is open, power quality changes, a sensor trips or another protective limit is reached. A stop is therefore not evidence that the car is about to drop. The car may be held by its normal brake or by a safety device while technicians investigate.

What passengers should do

  1. Keep clear of the doors and steady yourself; do not jump or brace against moving panels.
  2. Press the alarm button or use the two-way phone or intercom. State the building address, elevator number or location if you know it.
  3. Follow instructions from the building operator or emergency services. Do not pry doors, climb through a hatch or attempt to reach a landing on your own.

Can elevator doors open by themselves between floors?

How car and landing doors are intended to work

At a normal stop, the door on the elevator car and the door at the landing operate together. An interlock prevents the landing door from being released unless the car is in the permitted floor-level zone; the car door also receives a signal before opening. The precise hardware and permitted leveling range vary by design and code, but the basic objective is the same: prevent a passenger from stepping into an empty shaft.

Doors can move unexpectedly when a control system is resetting, when a technician has placed equipment in service mode or when a fault affects door operation. That possibility is a reason to keep out of the doorway, not a reason to test the interlock. Never wedge a door open, insert an object into the sill or try to defeat a lock.

If the car stops with the doors closed

Use the alarm, phone or intercom and wait. If the car is level with a floor but the doors do not open, do not assume it is safe to force them; a qualified responder must confirm that the car is secured and that the landing is safe. If the car is visibly between floors, stay inside and keep others away from the opening.

Should you jump before a stalled elevator hits?

Why jumping is not a safety maneuver

Jumping at the instant of impact would require perfect timing, and a passenger cannot know whether or when a car will move. A person’s jump speed is also small compared with the forces involved in an uncontrolled movement. Passenger safety guidance does not recommend jumping; it recommends remaining in the car and contacting help.

Modern elevators are designed to stop or hold the car when a monitored fault occurs. Treating every stall as an imminent crash can lead to the more realistic danger: a person opening a door or climbing out into a shaft or an uneven landing.

The correct response to a stalled car

  • Stay in the car. Keep away from the doors and do not attempt to exit through the ceiling hatch.
  • Use the alarm, emergency phone or intercom. Give the building name, address and car number if displayed.
  • Tell other occupants to remain calm and wait for trained rescuers. A stalled car has ventilation; do not obstruct vents or damage equipment.
  • Follow only instructions from identified building staff, firefighters or elevator technicians. If someone outside tells you to force a door, continue using the car’s communication system to verify the instruction.

Does pressing the elevator button more times make it arrive faster?

What repeated presses can do

Hall-call systems register a request and assign cars through a controller. Pressing the button repeatedly does not create a higher-priority request. On some systems described by Otis, additional presses can cancel a call rather than accelerate it. Other systems may ignore duplicate presses, so the effect depends on the controller and software.

There is no dependable passenger technique for making a car arrive sooner by “mashing” the button. Service time is governed by current car locations, traffic, programmed dispatching, accessibility calls, maintenance status and, in some buildings, destination-control rules.

The useful button procedure

  1. Press the call button once in the direction you want to travel. Confirm that its indicator lights, if the building provides one.
  2. Stand to the side of the doors so exiting passengers have room.
  3. If the indicator does not light or the lift remains unavailable, use the building’s posted service number or contact desk rather than repeatedly pressing.
  4. For a mobility, medical or other accessibility need, use the designated call or intercom procedure shown in the building and allow extra dispatch time.

Are elevators safe during a fire?

Why stairs are the default evacuation route

Do not use a passenger elevator to evacuate during a fire unless firefighters specifically direct you to use a designated system. Smoke can enter shafts and lobbies; heat, water, fire alarm signals or electrical faults can disable equipment. Many buildings program fire recall, which sends cars to a designated floor and removes them from ordinary passenger service. That behavior is a code- and building-specific response, not a promise that a car will remain available.

Follow the building’s fire plan, alarms and instructions from fire services. Use the nearest safe stairway, close doors behind you if instructed, and never re-enter for belongings. If you are already inside an elevator when it stops or changes operation, use the alarm or intercom and wait for directions rather than forcing a door into a smoke-filled landing.

Is it safe to use an elevator during or after an earthquake?

What seismic protection can do

Some elevators have seismic sensors or earthquake operation modes. Depending on the installation, a sensor may stop the car, send it to a designated floor or remove it from service after shaking. These features vary with the equipment, local seismic requirements and the building’s emergency controls. A sensor response does not establish that the rest of the building or lift is safe for passengers.

Passenger guidance

Do not enter a passenger elevator during shaking. Afterward, wait for building or emergency instructions and a qualified inspection before using one. Power may be interrupted, rails or equipment may be damaged, or doors may be obstructed even when the lobby looks normal.

If you are trapped in a car, stay inside, call for help and do not pry the doors. Keep away from the opening and conserve your phone battery for communication. Responders can assess the car, shaft and building before opening an exit.

Why elevator safety advice is not identical everywhere

“Elevator” covers several technologies: traction machines with counterweights, hydraulic lifts, machine-roomless arrangements, freight equipment and specialized lifts. Door interlocks, overspeed devices, seismic operation, fire recall and communication equipment differ by model and jurisdiction. Building age and modernization history can be as important as the manufacturer name.

For that reason, a safety explanation should identify its limits. A feature described for a high-rise traction system should not be assumed to exist on every low-rise or hydraulic installation. Local inspection rules, posted emergency instructions and the condition of the specific car take precedence over a general internet claim.

A practical checklist for passengers

  • Normal ride: Let people exit before boarding, keep hands and clothing clear of the doors, and supervise children.
  • Door irregularity: Do not hold, pry or defeat the door. Step away and report the car.
  • Stall: Remain inside, use the alarm or intercom, provide your location and wait for qualified help.
  • Fire: Take stairs and follow the fire plan; use an elevator only when directed by fire personnel.
  • Earthquake: Avoid elevators during and after shaking until officials and qualified inspectors permit service.
  • Unclear instructions: Trust the car’s emergency communication system and identified responders, not a bystander suggesting an improvised escape.

What these myths leave out

Manufacturer safety pages are useful for explaining mechanisms and passenger actions, but they are not independent rankings of every elevator installation. No single injury-rate statistic establishes that one brand or design is universally safest. The meaningful questions for a particular building are which elevator type is installed, which protective features are present, whether inspections and maintenance are current, and what local emergency procedures require.

The practical conclusion is consistent across the five myths: do not defeat a safety system to save a few seconds. Press a call button once, keep doors closed, stay in a stalled car, and use stairs or emergency instructions when fire or earthquake conditions make passenger elevators unsuitable.
