La Peregrina necklace ranks first among Elizabeth Taylor’s jewels sold at Christie’s 2011 estate auction, with two pieces tied for second. The ranking below uses documented realized auction prices, not present-day appraisals or estimates of what the jewels might be worth now.
Elizabeth Taylor’s most expensive jewels by 2011 auction price
Christie’s December 2011 sale provides a consistent basis for comparing the jewels: the prices below are the reported results for those lots.
| Rank | Jewel | Realized auction price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | La Peregrina necklace | $11,842,500 |
| 2 (tie) | Elizabeth Taylor Diamond ring, formerly known as the Krupp diamond | $8,818,500 |
| 2 (tie) | Taj Mahal Diamond necklace | $8,818,500 |
| 4 | Bulgari emerald and diamond pendant brooch | $6,578,500 |
| 5 | Van Cleef & Arpels ruby and diamond ring | More than $4.2 million |
The two second-place results are an exact tie in Christie’s official results, so neither is ranked above the other. Forbes’ contemporary account gives the Van Cleef & Arpels ring’s price as more than $4.2 million; the exact all-in amount is not established here.
What made each jewel notable
La Peregrina necklace
Cartier designed the necklace around La Peregrina, a historic pearl of about 203 grains, or roughly 50 carats. Richard Burton gave it to Taylor in 1969 after buying the pearl at auction for $37,000. Christie’s described the necklace as the sale’s top lot; its result set records at the time for an historic pearl and for a pearl jewel.

Elizabeth Taylor Diamond ring
This D-color, 33.19-carat diamond ring was a gift from Burton in 1968. Taylor wore it virtually every day, according to Christie’s. The sale set a record price per carat for a colorless diamond at the time. The stone was also known as the Krupp diamond; its later auction name was The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond.
Taj Mahal Diamond necklace
The necklace pairs a historic Indian diamond and jade pendant with a later Cartier chain of ruby and gold. Burton gave it to Taylor for her 40th birthday. Christie’s catalogue describes the heart-shaped diamond as inscribed with Nur Jahan’s name and links its traditional history to the Mughal court; that traditional account is not the same as independently establishing every stage of the stone’s provenance. The auction result set a record for an Indian jewel at the time.

Van Cleef & Arpels ruby and diamond ring
Forbes’ contemporary account reported a ruby result of $421,981 per carat. Because that report gives the total sale price only as more than $4.2 million, a more precise realized total should not be inferred from the per-carat figure.

What the ranking can—and cannot—show
These figures document what buyers paid in 2011, with buyer’s premium included where reported. They are not current appraisals, guaranteed resale values, or inflation-adjusted comparisons. The sale establishes the prices at that auction, but the available accounts do not establish a complete post-2011 resale history or current owner for every jewel. Nor does this Taylor-specific ranking establish which celebrity jewel has achieved the highest auction price overall.
