Ématelier makes both monochrome Grand Feu enamel dials and artistic, hand-painted designs, including bespoke dials for customers’ existing watches. Its 2024 Sprezzatura collection listed complete watches with handmade Grand Feu dials from $1,900 USD. That was a dated, brand-published price—not proof that the watches remain available at that price today. “Affordable” is best understood here as a relative description of a specialist craft, not a claim that the watches are inexpensive.
What Ématelier makes—and what “affordable” means here
Ématelier describes itself as a specialist in traditionally handcrafted monochrome and artistic Grand Feu dials. Its named techniques include miniature enamel painting, cloisonné, champlevé and lacquer painting. The company also says it makes bespoke dials for customers’ existing watches, so its work is not limited to buying a complete watch.

The 2024 Sprezzatura collection page listed complete watches across several dial constructions, from $1,900 for handmade Grand Feu dials to $4,900–$5,500 for cloisonné versions. Oracle of Time characterized the collection as accessible in its 14 August 2024 coverage, linking that judgment to Ématelier’s choice to avoid some costly movement and case-finishing options. Ématelier’s page titled “The 2024 Sprezzatura Collection” gave these listed prices for complete watches. The figures are historical page prices; check with the maker for current availability and pricing.

The same page stated an initial production run of 70 watches total, five per model. That describes the stated initial run, not present stock. The collection’s price differences reflect distinct dial constructions and techniques; the listed prices alone do not establish the cost of commissioning a dial for a customer’s own watch. How hand-painted Grand Feu enamel is made
Grand Feu enamel is glass applied to a dial base in layers and fired repeatedly. In its craft description, Ématelier says the image is built in layers, with firings between coats; the Geneva technique adds transparent enamel over a completed painting. The company describes as many as 10 to 12 firings for an Ématelier piece. These are brand descriptions of its process, not independent measurements or a universal specification for every enamel dial.

Each firing introduces risk: Ématelier identifies warping, cracking, bubbling and even a dial exploding as possible failures when firing or color sequence goes wrong. Why firing specifications differ by collection
There is no single temperature or firing count that should be applied to every Ématelier dial. The company’s collection pages give different specifications for different work:

- Sprezzatura: Ématelier’s 2024 technical information describes multiple enamel layers and firings at 750°C to 800°C. Its cloisonné option uses twelve enamel colors, separated by a 0.1 mm gold ribbon, and is specified as having eleven firings at 750°C to 800°C.
- Elements: The separate Elements page describes multiple firings at 900°C and says fired enamel markings are fused into the polished surface. That is an Elements-specific description, not the Sprezzatura firing temperature.

Ématelier’s 2017 Harmony release described a particularly labor-intensive miniature-painted dial: seven to ten days of work per dial and 12 firings, at stated temperatures of 750°C to 800°C. Those are historical Harmony specifications, not a promise of the time or firing count required for every current or bespoke dial. They illustrate how a hand-painted image can involve sustained work across repeated firings, but they cannot be used to calculate a current commission’s labor or price. Choosing between a complete watch and a bespoke dial
The practical distinction is whether you want a watch from a published collection or a dial made for a watch you already own. Ématelier describes bespoke work for existing watches, but the 2024 Sprezzatura price list is for complete watches and does not state prices or compatibility terms for custom dials.
- For a complete watch: compare the dial technique and construction—plain Grand Feu, sunken, double-sunken or cloisonné—against the dated collection prices, then confirm current stock and price with Ématelier.
- For an existing watch: ask Ématelier whether the watch can take a custom dial and request a quote for the specific design and construction. The available published price tiers do not establish a bespoke-dial price.
- For an artistic image: distinguish miniature enamel painting from cloisonné or other construction. The technique names indicate different approaches; the company’s general process description does not mean every technique uses the same sequence or firing specification.
