A world-class end-of-trip facility is a connected arrival-and-departure system, not a room filled with bicycle stands. It gives people a safe route from the building entrance to secure parking, a practical place to change and shower, dry storage for work and riding clothes, and support equipment that keeps bicycles usable. The right Cora Bike Rack solution follows the brief: demand, room geometry, ceiling height, access, security, circulation and operations.
Start by fixing the project requirements and authority approvals, then test rack layouts against the complete user journey. Cora provides product-selection, layout, capacity-review, specification and installation guidance, plus BIM and technical resources; those services can accelerate documentation, but the design team remains responsible for confirming the current standard and project-specific compliance.

What a high-performing end-of-trip facility has to achieve
End-of-trip (EOT) facilities combine secure bicycle parking with showers, changing amenities and clothing lockers. Cora describes the changing and wet areas as places where functionality, accessibility and comfort must be considered together, rather than treated as leftover support space. That principle affects every decision, from the width of the route into the bike room to the location of a dry locker relative to the showers.
Design the sequence a user experiences:
- Arrive: a legible, step-free route leads from the street, car park or lift to the facility without forcing cyclists through hazardous service areas.
- Secure the bicycle: the rider can identify an available position, manoeuvre the bicycle into it and lock the frame without blocking another user.
- Change and store belongings: work clothing, riding kit, helmets and bags have distinct, convenient storage locations.
- Use wet areas: showers, basins and drying zones support the expected volume while keeping wet traffic separate from dry circulation.
- Leave ready for work: mirrors, benches, hooks, lockers and clear wayfinding prevent queues and avoid conflict between arriving and departing users.
That sequence is also a useful test for drawings. If a rack count looks impressive but bicycles cannot be wheeled to the furthest position, or if wet users cross the only dry path, the facility is not performing as planned.

Set the brief before choosing a rack
Estimate demand and user types
Record the expected number of daily bicycle commuters, peak arrival periods, visitors, contractors and people using e-bikes or scooters. Separate regular peak demand from occasional overflow; a rack plan sized only to an annual average can fail every morning. Ask whether users arrive with panniers, child seats, trailers, wide handlebars or heavy e-bikes, because those characteristics affect manoeuvring and the usefulness of compact systems.
Document the building’s bicycle-parking obligation and any additional expectation set by the planning authority, landlord or tenant brief. Cora’s homepage frames the practical questions project teams ask as: how many bikes can fit in the room, which systems are most space-efficient and cost-effective, and whether AS 2890.3-compliant products and spacing are needed. Treat those as prompts for the project brief, not as answers that can be assumed without checking the applicable approval conditions.
Survey the room and the route to it
Capture the clear internal dimensions, columns, doors, ramps, lifts, fire egress paths, drainage points, ventilation, structural zones and finished ceiling height. Measure the entire approach, not just the bike-room rectangle. A rack that fits on plan may be unusable if a door swing, turn, threshold or lift landing prevents a bicycle from reaching it.
Reserve space for circulation and for the largest bicycle types expected. Mark accessible positions and a route to them at the beginning of the layout, rather than trying to carve them out after the rack count is fixed. Coordinate sprinkler, lighting, CCTV, access-control readers and cleaning access with the rack elevations.

Define security and operations
Decide who can enter, how access is issued and revoked, whether visitors need temporary access, and who responds when a bicycle is abandoned or a locker is not emptied. A secure door is only one layer: sightlines, lighting, durable fixings, camera coverage where appropriate, and a documented key or access-card process all influence perceived security.
Include cleaning, inspection, repairs, lost-property handling and seasonal demand in the operating plan. The facilities team should know which components are replaceable, where spare keys or access credentials are controlled, and how a damaged rack or wet floor is isolated without closing the whole facility.
Choose the bicycle-parking format for the room
Cora lists rails and multi-bike racks, vertical racks, two-tier systems, dynamic racks, horizontal wall or post racks, and bicycle lockers. The formats solve different geometry and security problems; there is no universally best rack.
| Format | Where it can work well | Checks before specification |
|---|---|---|
| Rails and multi-bike racks | General-purpose rooms where straightforward access and familiar operation matter. | Confirm the number of usable positions after circulation, door swings, columns and accessible bays are drawn. |
| Vertical racks | Rooms with a useful wall height and limited floor depth. | Check that users can lift or guide bicycles safely, and that the approach allows the bicycle to be aligned with the rack. |
| Two-tier systems | Space-constrained rooms with sufficient ceiling height for upper and lower positions. | Verify the selected model’s clearances, lifting method, lighting, user reach and ceiling services. Cora says its two-tier racks can increase capacity by over 100% where ceiling height permits; this is a Cora product claim, not an independently measured result. |
| Dynamic racks | Projects seeking higher density while retaining a managed access pattern. | Test the operating sequence with the actual bicycle mix and confirm that the design is compliant for the project. Cora describes compliant dynamic designs as potentially increasing capacity by 20% in a given space; actual results depend on the model and final layout. |
| Wall or post racks | Distributed parking, narrow zones or locations where floor-mounted rows would obstruct circulation. | Coordinate fixing points with structure and services, and protect walls from pedals and handlebars. |
| Bicycle lockers | Users who need an enclosed, individually assigned storage option or additional security. | Check footprint, ventilation, door operation, cleaning access and whether the model suits an undercover or exposed environment. |
The capacity figures above should be used as design hypotheses to test, not as guaranteed project outcomes. Count only positions that remain usable with the required aisle, access route, door clearances and equipment zones in place.

Plan capacity without sacrificing access
Begin with a scaled plan showing the building envelope and all fixed constraints. Place the main circulation path first, then accessible parking, then the chosen rack modules. Add columns, doors, ramps, fire equipment, repair equipment, charging points and lockers before calculating the remaining positions. A second drawing should show elevations and ceiling services; two-tier and vertical systems can fail at this stage even when the plan view appears efficient.
Use a capacity schedule that identifies the rack model, nominal positions, positions removed for obstructions, accessible positions, spaces reserved for larger bicycles, and the final net count. Record the assumptions: peak occupancy, bicycle dimensions, whether helmets remain on bicycles, and whether charging is restricted to designated bays. This makes later changes auditable.

Use lockers and changing amenities as one system
Match locker type to the storage brief
Cora’s bike-locker range includes single-door, double-door, vertical and two-tier options, with heavy-duty and light-duty variants for some models. Its product page describes light-duty lockers as an option for undercover EOT and bicycle-storage areas. Confirm the use environment, corrosion exposure, ventilation, lock type, cleaning method and model-specific dimensions with the supplier before specifying.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
Separate the storage needs that are often mixed together: a bicycle locker protects the bicycle; a personal changeroom locker protects clothing and valuables; a drying area handles damp garments; and a shelf or hook keeps helmets and bags off the floor. If one enclosure is expected to do all four jobs, document how wet items are ventilated and how maintenance staff can clean it.
Coordinate showers, dry zones and accessibility
Keep the route from bicycle parking to changing rooms intuitive and avoid making users cross a wet floor to reach lockers. Provide durable, slip-resistant finishes, adequate drainage, ventilation and a clear place for wet gear to dry. The exact dimensions, fixture counts and accessibility provisions must be set by the project’s qualified design team under the current applicable requirements; Cora’s article provides the design emphasis on functionality, accessibility and comfort but does not replace that work.

Consider benches, mirrors, hooks, hair-drying points, sanitary disposal, drinking water and a location for cleaning supplies as part of the fitout brief. The facility should work for people changing quickly as well as those who need more time, without forcing either group into a single queue.
Cora names enthdegree as a partner for combined bike-room and changeroom design and fitout, and its catalogue names Activelocker for changeroom locker design, layout and product-selection coordination. Those service arrangements can change, so verify the current scope directly before putting either company in a specification or appointment.

Add support equipment that reflects actual use
Cora specifically recommends a commercial-grade bicycle repair stand and a tyre pump for a bike room or EOT facility. Place them where a minor repair does not block the main aisle, and provide a durable floor finish, task lighting and a way to secure a bicycle while it is being worked on. Specify commercial duty, replaceable wear parts and a maintenance responsibility rather than treating the equipment as an informal amenity.
Cora also lists e-bike charging racks, scooter racks, bicycle lockers and other micromobility products. Include them only when the user and operations brief supports them. Charging requires an electrical load assessment, protected outlets, cable management, fire-safety coordination and a policy for damaged batteries; those matters should be resolved by the relevant engineers and authority, not inferred from a product category. Scooter parking may need a separate location so handlebars and decks do not intrude into bicycle aisles.
Use Cora’s technical and documentation support deliberately
Cora’s homepage and About page describe support for Australian projects including compliance expertise, layout optimisation, capacity and space-efficiency reviews, product selection, specification and installation guidance. The company says it has supported projects across Australia for more than 25 years; that is a company statement, not an independent performance assessment.
- Send a complete brief: provide the room survey, target demand, bicycle and micromobility mix, security model, ceiling heights, access route and required deliverables.
- Request alternative layouts: ask for at least one conventional-access option and one higher-density option, with the net usable capacity and the assumptions clearly identified.
- Review model data: confirm dimensions, fixing requirements, clearances, materials, finish, operating method, maintenance and lead time for the selected rack or locker.
- Coordinate the room: overlay the vendor layout with architecture, structure, services, fire safety, access control, wet areas and cleaning routes.
- Document the decision: place the selected model, quantity, installation notes and capacity schedule in the specification and drawings, including exclusions and interfaces by others.
- Use BIM content where useful: Cora provides BIM resources for Revit and ArchiCAD, along with technical material. Check file version, object parameters and geometry against the current product data before issuing a model.
- Plan installation and handover: confirm substrate readiness, delivery access, sequencing, protection of finishes, commissioning and facilities-team training.
Start with Cora’s homepage, About page and documents library. The product range provides the format overview; model-specific technical information should control the final specification.
Handle AS 2890.3 and approvals with care
Cora states that its products are designed for compliance with AS 2890.3 (2015), describes its team as experienced with the standard, and offers an AS 2890.3 guide and related technical resources. Those statements do not establish that a particular room, layout or installation complies. The standard text, amendments, planning conditions, building requirements and local authority interpretations must be checked for the project and date in question.
Ask the qualified design team to identify which requirements apply, where they are demonstrated on drawings, and which responsibilities sit with the product supplier, installer and principal designer. Keep the applicable edition and any authority correspondence in the project record. If a supplier layout uses the word compliant, request the supporting dimensions and conditions rather than copying the word into a project certificate.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
- Counting nominal rack positions: Recalculate using net usable positions after aisles, columns, doors and equipment are drawn.
- Choosing density before testing the user: Run a full-size or digital manoeuvring test with e-bikes, wide bars and panniers before approving two-tier or vertical systems.
- Ignoring ceiling services: Coordinate upper-tier clearance with sprinklers, lights, ducts and structure in an elevation, not just a plan.
- Putting wet and dry traffic together: Rework the sequence so showers, drying and lockers do not turn the bicycle route into a wet corridor.
- Providing security without operations: Assign access administration, inspections, abandoned-bike handling, cleaning and repair response before opening.
- Over-specifying accessories: Select repair stands, pumps, charging and scooter storage from the user and maintenance brief, not from a catalogue checklist.
- Relying on an old standard reference: Reconfirm the current edition, amendments and authority requirements at design approval and before construction.
- Issuing generic BIM objects: Replace placeholder geometry with the selected model’s current dimensions, fixing points and clearances.
Scenario-based layout decisions
| Project condition | Likely direction | Decision to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Large demand, high clear ceiling and controlled access | Test a two-tier or dynamic arrangement, with conventional racks for users who need easier loading. | Confirm upper-level operation, lighting, accessibility, maintenance and the net capacity after circulation. |
| Low ceiling or many overhead services | Prioritise rails, multi-bike, wall/post or suitable vertical systems. | Verify lifting effort, wall structure, approach distance and protection of services. |
| Users require individually secured storage | Evaluate bicycle lockers alongside open secure parking. | Check footprint, ventilation, exposure, lock administration and cleaning access. |
| Mixed bicycle, e-bike and scooter demand | Create a zoned plan with appropriate racks, charging and scooter positions. | Confirm electrical, fire-safety, cable-management and operating policies before installation. |
Specification and handover checklist
- Approved demand, user mix, peak period and overflow assumption.
- Dimensioned room, approach route, ceiling-height and services survey.
- Rack format, model, finish, quantity and net usable capacity schedule.
- Accessible route and positions coordinated with the qualified design team.
- Security, access control, lighting, surveillance and key-management responsibilities.
- Lockers, showers, wet-area drainage, ventilation, drying and cleaning provisions.
- Repair stand, pump, charging and scooter equipment selected for commercial duty where required.
- Current standard and authority requirements recorded, with evidence on the drawings.
- Supplier data, BIM objects, fixing details, installation sequence, warranties and maintenance information.
- Facilities-team training, inspection intervals, spare parts and opening-day user guidance.
A successful EOT facility is the result of this coordination. Use Cora’s rack range and project support to test options quickly, but approve the final arrangement only when the complete journey, room geometry, operations and authority requirements agree.
