This entryway console makeover changed three visible things: the table became a dark green instead of orange, the lower shelf disappeared, and the original ring pulls were replaced with large gold knobs. The result is a lighter-looking piece with a more open underside and a color that works with the rooms around it. The construction choices belong to one April 2026 project; the preparation and painting sequence below adapts manufacturer and retailer guidance for other tables without treating any single product system as universal.
The before-and-after decisions at a glance
The featured table had a finish its owner found too orange and splotchy in person. The entry connects to rooms that already contain many natural wood finishes, so adding another wood-toned surface did not solve the visual problem. Pink was considered, but a raspberry settee visible from the entry made that color feel too competitive. The chosen finish was Behr Scallion, a dark-ish green. As Kristi wrote in the April 29, 2026 account, “I chose a dark-ish green called Scallion from Behr.”

The photographs make the table and lamps look brighter than they appear in the room, so use the images as a record of the design direction rather than a guarantee of how the color will read in your own light.
| Element | Before | After | Why it changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finish | Orange, uneven-looking wood finish | Dark green painted finish | Green separated the console from the adjoining natural wood and avoided competing with the raspberry settee. |
| Underside | Lower shelf filled the space below the top | Shelf removed for an open base | The owner preferred the lighter visual weight and found the floor area easier to clean. |
| Base construction | Existing turned-leg arrangement | Legs joined and reshaped, with blocks, 2×2 lumber, and trim added | The structural changes supported the new open configuration and concealed support pieces. |
| Hardware | Ring pulls | Simple large gold knobs | A small hardware change gave the drawers a cleaner, more deliberate accent. |
Removing a shelf is not automatically an improvement. It can reduce storage and may affect rigidity, so treat that decision as a design-and-structure assessment, not a decorative shortcut.

Why paint won over stain for this console
The paint-versus-stain decision came from the actual room and the actual existing finish. Stain would have left more of the wood character visible, but it would not have solved the owner’s objection to the orange, splotchy appearance. Paint provided an opaque reset and introduced a color that could sit between the neighboring finishes and the raspberry upholstery.
| Question | Paint | Stain or gel stain |
|---|---|---|
| What it changes most | Color and visual uniformity; it can hide mismatched repairs and uneven grain. | Wood tone and contrast while retaining more visible grain. |
| Best fit for this project | The documented choice, because the old color was the problem. | A possible alternative only if the existing wood and color are attractive after preparation. |
| What the sources establish | A personal aesthetic decision, not a controlled durability, cost, or labor comparison. | No evidence here establishes that it is cheaper, harder-wearing, or easier. |
Before choosing, view a sample on the console itself or on a removable part. A color that looks balanced beside the wall can shift beside a rug, upholstery, or warm bulbs. If the table contains several wood species or repaired areas, an opaque finish usually gives you more control over the final uniformity; that is a practical implication of coverage, not a tested ranking.
How the base was opened up
The makeover removed the lower shelf, then dealt with the consequences of that change. The turned legs were joined and reshaped. Blocks were built to attach them securely, the base was reinforced with 2×2 lumber, and trim was added to hide the support pieces. Those are construction details from this particular console, not a standard recipe for every table.
Inspect yours before cutting anything. Look for screws, dowels, stretchers, corner blocks, and joints that rely on the shelf for lateral stability. Photograph the underside, measure the opening, and mark every part that carries weight. If removing a shelf leaves the legs able to rack from side to side, add an appropriately fastened stretcher or other reinforcement before refinishing. Use joinery and fasteners suited to the wood and load; do not assume decorative trim is structural.
A preparation and painting sequence you can adapt
1. Decide what stays and what comes off
Empty the drawers and remove the knobs or pulls. Take out shelves only after confirming that the remaining frame will stay square and stable. Label hardware and keep screws with their original locations. If you are changing the base, complete cutting, joining, reinforcement, and trim work before final surface preparation so you do not damage a fresh finish.

2. Clean away oils and grime
Sherwin-Williams’ painted-console instructions begin with soapy-water cleaning, followed by thorough drying. Use a cleaner appropriate for the existing coating and avoid saturating joints or veneer edges. Dirt left in corners can prevent primer from bonding; grease around pulls and drawer fronts is especially easy to miss.

3. Evaluate the old coating before sanding
Loose or peeling material must be removed, but an unknown old finish is not automatically safe to sand. Sherwin-Williams warns that sanding, scraping, or otherwise disturbing old paint can create lead-containing dust or fumes. Bunnings also advises eye and ear protection, a mask while sanding, and ventilation. If the coating may be old, test or contain it according to local lead-safety guidance before creating dust. Keep children, pets, food, and soft furnishings out of the work area, and use cleanup methods that do not spread contaminated dust.
Once the surface is known to be suitable for mechanical preparation, sand enough to dull gloss and smooth loose edges. Bunnings specifies 180-grit paper or a disc for its hallway-console example; that is one project’s abrasive choice, not a universal grit for every finish. Veneer, laminate, bare wood, and previously painted solid wood can require different pressure and abrasives. Wipe all sanding dust away before the next coat.
4. Prime for the actual substrate
Apply primer where the coating and substrate call for it. Sherwin-Williams’ furniture guidance notes that bare wood may need an adhesion primer. The correct product depends on whether you are coating sound paint, varnish, laminate, stained wood, or exposed timber. Brush edges, corners, and profiles, then use a mini roller on broad faces to limit visible texture. Let the primer dry according to its label before evaluating coverage or sanding between coats when the product directs it.
5. Apply the color with controlled coats
Use a brush on edges and turned legs and a mini roller on flat areas, keeping a wet edge and avoiding heavy buildup at corners. Two thin, well-leveled coats are generally easier to control than one overloaded coat, but follow the paint label for recoat timing and coverage. The Sherwin-Williams process also supports measuring and lightly marking sections, taping them, painting color blocks, allowing the paint to dry, and then removing tape carefully. That technique is useful if your console needs a two-tone treatment rather than the single green used in the featured project.

Inspect at the viewing angle and in the room’s normal lighting. A finish can look smooth from the front while showing lap marks along the top or drips beneath the rail. Correct defects only after the coat has dried enough for the product’s instructions, then remove dust before recoating.
6. Respect product-specific drying and reassembly instructions
A Rust-Oleum spray-paint method calls for a well-ventilated workspace, a drop cloth, removal of drawers and hardware, loose-paint removal, two or more light coats of bonding primer, and two or more light coats of spray enamel. It specifies waiting 24 hours before replacing drawers and hardware. That interval belongs to the cited spray system and conditions; it is not a universal cure time for brush-applied furniture paint. For any product, follow the label before loading drawers, sliding the table against a wall, or reinstalling knobs.
7. Reinstall and protect the finished piece
Put the drawers and hardware back only when the coating is ready for handling. Align new knobs with a template or measured centerlines so both drawers read as a pair. Lift the console into place rather than dragging it, and add felt or another suitable floor protector if the surface requires it. Avoid placing wet umbrellas, abrasive baskets, or heavy objects on a newly finished top until the coating has reached the label’s stated handling and cure stages.
Materials to gather
- Cleaner and soapy water suitable for the existing finish
- Sandpaper or sanding blocks matched to the coating; the Bunnings example uses 180-grit abrasive
- Dust-removal cloths and a drop cloth
- Furniture or adhesion primer selected for the substrate
- Paint, a quality brush, and a mini roller
- Painter’s tape and a pencil or light marking tool for color blocks
- Replacement knobs or pulls and the correct screws
- Eye and ear protection, a suitable mask, and ventilation for dusty work
- 2×2 lumber, blocks, fasteners, and trim only if your structural redesign requires them
Sherwin-Williams lists a 3M All Purpose Sanding Sponge among the supplies for its painted-console project. That establishes it as a relevant example, not as the right abrasive for every table.

Fit and styling after the makeover
Measure the wall, the walkway, the door swing, and the depth of anything you plan to place on the top. Refined Living recommends judging a console against the available wall and path, then arranging objects in three visual zones with varied heights. Its suggested layers include a lamp or tall vase behind books, a plant, framed pieces, or a low tray. Those are styling recommendations rather than building standards, so use your own clearance measurements first.

Keep the walkway usable
Mark the console’s front edge with painter’s tape and walk past it while carrying bags or opening nearby doors. A visually airy, shelf-free base does not compensate for a top that projects into a circulation path. Leave enough room for drawers to open without striking a passerby or adjacent furniture.
Build height in layers
Place the tallest object toward the back, medium-height items near the center, and low objects such as a tray or books toward the front. Repeat one material or color from the room—such as the gold of the new knobs—without turning every object into a matching set. The dark green already supplies strong visual weight, so a few lighter or reflective pieces can prevent the top from appearing crowded.
Use the open underside deliberately
With the shelf gone, the floor and wall behind the console become part of the composition. Keep that area clear if easy cleaning is the priority, or add one lightweight basket only if it does not recreate the clutter and obstruction the shelf removed.

Paint fisheyes, craters, or peeling
These defects often point to oil, silicone, wax, or an incompatible glossy layer left on the surface. Stop adding coats, let the finish dry, clean and abrade the affected area appropriately, and apply a primer designed for the substrate before repainting. If peeling continues, identify whether the old coating itself is failing rather than burying it under new paint.
Brush marks and roller texture
Heavy application, overworking partially dried paint, or using the wrong roller can leave texture. Use lighter coats, maintain a wet edge, and allow the product’s recoat interval. On broad flat faces, a mini roller can produce a more consistent film than brushing alone; profiles and edges still need a brush.

Drawers stick after painting
Paint buildup on drawer edges or inside runners can change clearances. Do not force the drawer. Let the coating dry fully, identify the contact points, and remove only the excess material needed for smooth operation, following the coating maker’s guidance.
The table wobbles after shelf removal
Recheck square, leg attachment, and the new reinforcement. The featured project used blocks, 2×2 lumber, and trim, but your console may need a different brace or fastener pattern. Restore stability before loading the top or styling the piece.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe green looks different from the sample
Compare it in daylight and the room’s evening lighting, beside the actual wall and upholstery. Photography can make the featured table and lamps appear brighter than they are in person, and the same effect can mislead your expectations. If the color is fundamentally wrong, repaint only after the existing film is sound and properly prepared.
What this makeover does—and does not—prove
This project demonstrates a coherent visual strategy: use paint when the existing wood tone is the problem, open the base when storage is not worth the visual weight, reinforce any structural change, and use hardware to sharpen the final look. It does not establish a universal paint brand, primer, grit, drying time, durability rating, budget, or lifespan. Those outcomes depend on the substrate, coating system, preparation, environment, and how the console is used.
