The right makeover starts with the surface, not the color. A distressed credenza may be solid wood, wood veneer, laminate, or already painted, and each substrate changes what you can safely sand, stain, prime, and paint. Identify the construction and repair its condition before choosing a finish.
For an intact laminate credenza, use a bonding-primer-and-paint system: clean off residue, scuff very lightly, prime, and apply furniture paint according to the label. Do not stain laminate, and do not sand aggressively enough to cut through its thin decorative face.

Identify the credenza’s surface before buying supplies
A distressed appearance describes wear or styling; it does not identify the material underneath. Look at exposed edges, chipped corners, the underside, drawer interiors, and any damaged area, but treat visual clues as clues rather than proof. The available manufacturer guides do not establish one reliable test that distinguishes every veneer and laminate construction.
Solid wood
Solid wood has grain that continues through an edge or a sanded repair. If it is sound and you want the grain to remain visible, a transparent or tinted wood finish may be appropriate after careful preparation. If the piece has deep stains, mismatched repairs, or a look you want to unify, paint is usually the more forgiving visual choice. Do not assume that a solid-looking edge proves the entire case is solid wood; inspect several areas.

Wood veneer
Veneer is a thin layer of real wood over another panel. It can accept a grain-revealing finish when the veneer is intact and prepared gently, but sanding through it exposes the core and creates a repair problem. Loose bubbles, lifting edges, missing chips, or water-swollen panels need attention before any finish is selected. Because the supplied guides focus on laminate painting rather than a complete veneer-restoration method, use the coating maker’s directions for a specific veneer product system.
Laminate
Laminate is a manufactured decorative layer bonded to a panel. It may look like wood, stone, or a solid color, but it is not a stainable wood surface. Benjamin Moore’s laminate guidance states that laminate should be painted rather than stained. The exterior layer is thin, so sanding is limited to dulling sheen and improving adhesion, not removing the face.
Previously painted or coated furniture
Old paint, clear coat, wax, polish, and oily residue can prevent new primer from bonding. Check for peeling edges, soft or gummy areas, cracking, and powdery surfaces. Unknown older coatings also create a safety question, particularly in a home built before 1978.
Check condition and address lead-paint risk first
Before disturbing a distressed finish, look for loose veneer, peeling laminate, failed joints, water damage, cracks, holes, and unstable hardware. A beautiful new color cannot stabilize a swollen panel or a joint that is separating.
Lead safety is separate from ordinary dust control. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states: “Any renovation, repair, or painting (RRP) project in a pre-1978 home that has lead-based paint can easily create dangerous lead dust.” If the credenza has an old unknown coating and the work is in a pre-1978 U.S. home, consider hiring a lead-safe certified contractor rather than sanding or scraping it yourself. Requirements vary by location and by the project.

For applicable do-it-yourself work, EPA guidance emphasizes containing the area, minimizing dust, and cleaning thoroughly. Useful supplies include plastic sheeting, tape, wet-dry sandpaper, and a HEPA vacuum. Do not dry-sand or aggressively scrape an unknown old coating and assume a respirator alone makes the process safe. The EPA’s linked lead-safe pamphlet was updated in March 2026, so check current local and federal requirements before starting.

Choose the finish by substrate
| Surface condition | Finish that fits the evidence | Preparation priority | Do not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sound solid wood with attractive grain | Consider a grain-revealing finish or paint, depending on repairs and the desired look | Clean, repair, and sand only as appropriate for the selected product | Assume every dark or distressed area is removable without testing the existing coating |
| Intact wood veneer | A veneer-compatible clear or colored finish, or paint when repairs make grain matching impractical | Repair lifting or chipped veneer; sand conservatively | Sand through the thin veneer face |
| Intact laminate | Bonding primer followed by furniture-appropriate paint | Remove residue, clean, lightly scuff, remove dust, prime, then paint | Stain laminate or abrade until the decorative layer is gone |
| Previously painted furniture | A compatible primer and paint after the existing film is stable and clean | Resolve peeling, residue, and unknown-coating safety before coating | Trap loose paint or contamination under a new finish |
Can you paint laminate?
Yes. Laminate can be painted when the surface is intact and properly prepared. Benjamin Moore recommends cleaning, gentle sanding, a bonding primer, and paint; Sherwin-Williams likewise describes residue removal, cleaning, light 150-grit sanding to reduce sheen, dust removal, primer, and paint. These are manufacturer instructions, not independent comparative tests, and the label for the product you actually buy takes precedence.
Use paint, not stain, on laminate. Stain is designed to penetrate wood fibers; laminate does not provide that absorbent wood surface. A compatible bonding primer creates the adhesion layer that paint needs. The decorative layer is thin, so the goal of sanding is a uniformly dull surface, not a bare panel.
Step-by-step entryway credenza makeover
-
Photograph and label the starting condition
Take photos of hardware placement, drawer orientation, and any damaged area. Note which surfaces are laminate, veneer, solid wood, or painted if you can identify them. This record helps you reinstall parts correctly and prevents a finish decision based only on the distressed appearance.
-
Remove hardware and movable parts
Take off pulls, knobs, hinges, and other removable hardware. Remove drawers or shelves when doing so gives you safer access to edges and interiors. Put screws and parts in labeled bags or containers. The Sherwin-Williams console workflow removes hardware and replaces handles after the coating is ready, a practical sequence for avoiding paint on moving parts.

Clean away dirt, wax, and grease
Use a cleaner or degreaser suitable for the existing surface. Pay attention to the area around pulls, the top where objects have sat, drawer fronts, and lower edges that collect floor dust. Cleaning is not optional: sanding residue or oily film can be driven into the surface and interfere with primer adhesion. Let the surface dry as directed by the cleaner and coating system.
-
Repair damage with a substrate-appropriate filler
Stabilize loose joints and veneer before filling cosmetic defects. Fill cracks, holes, or dents only with a compound suitable for that substrate, and allow it to dry according to its instructions. The cited guides establish the need for cleaning and preparation but do not specify one universal repair compound for every credenza, so follow the filler maker’s directions and test compatibility in an inconspicuous spot.
-
Scuff the surface without destroying it
For laminate, Sherwin-Williams specifies light sanding with 150-grit paper after cleaning to reduce sheen. Benjamin Moore similarly cautions against oversanding because laminate’s exterior layer is thin. Use even, light pressure and stop when the gloss is uniformly reduced. On veneer, be even more conservative; on painted surfaces, remove only material that the selected primer requires you to remove. Vacuum or wipe away all dust before priming.
-
Apply the correct primer
Choose a bonding or adhesion primer that states it is compatible with laminate or the particular substrate. A high-quality primer is part of the laminate process described by Sherwin-Williams. Apply the film evenly, avoid flooding corners, and observe the product’s drying and recoat window. If the label calls for a different preparation than a general guide, the label controls.

Paint in manageable sections
Use furniture-appropriate paint. In the Sherwin-Williams console project, a brush handles tight areas while a mini roller covers broader surfaces; that tool combination can help you control edges and reduce visible texture. Work in thin, even coats rather than trying to hide every mark in one heavy application. Respect the stated dry time and recoat time, and keep drawers and doors positioned so painted edges cannot stick together.

Let the coating become handle-ready
Dry to the touch is not necessarily ready for hardware or normal entryway use. Follow the label’s handling and cure guidance. Keep the credenza protected from bags, keys, wet umbrellas, and sliding objects until the coating has reached the recommended level of hardness.
-
Reinstall or replace hardware
Reuse hardware if its shape and finish suit the refined look, or choose replacement pulls by style and finish. Measure the distance between existing mounting holes before ordering replacements; matching that spacing avoids drilling unnecessary new holes. Install hardware only after the coating can tolerate tightening and normal handling.
Paint versus a visible wood-grain finish
A grain-revealing result makes sense only after you establish that the surface is real wood or intact veneer and that its condition supports an even finish. Repairs, stains, filler, and uneven color may remain visible under a transparent coating. Laminate is the clear exception in the supplied guidance: paint it rather than stain it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Paint gives you more freedom to unify mixed materials, hide contrasting repairs, and move from distressed to refined without matching every grain line. It also makes primer selection critical, especially on smooth laminate. A visible-grain finish can preserve character, but it demands a substrate that can be prepared without sanding through or exposing a different core.
Color, sheen, and hardware decisions
There is no universally correct palette for an entryway. Choose color in relation to the wall, floor, lighting, and the credenza’s role: a darker tone can visually anchor a long wall, while a lighter one may keep a narrow hall from feeling crowded. The piece’s dimensions and the room image were not specified, so treat color advice as a design decision rather than a technical requirement.

Sheen is similarly contextual. Compare sample boards or hidden test areas under the entryway’s actual light before committing. A higher sheen can emphasize surface irregularities; a lower sheen can make a repaired, painted piece look quieter. Neither is automatically right for every substrate or paint line.
Hardware can either preserve the furniture’s history or signal the makeover. Clean and reuse pulls that are structurally sound, or replace them with a style and finish that supports the new color. Keep the measured hole spacing with your shopping notes. No exact handle model or dimension is established for this project.

- New paint beads up or separates: Stop and inspect for wax, polish, grease, or an incompatible prior coating. Clean again as directed, let the surface dry, and confirm that the primer is intended for the substrate.
- Laminate edges show a lighter or different layer: You may have sanded through the decorative face. Do not continue abrading. Stabilize the edge, use a substrate-appropriate repair, and rely on the primer-and-paint system to create a uniform appearance.
- Primer remains soft or tacky: Check temperature, ventilation, film thickness, and the label’s recoat guidance. Do not cover a coating that has not reached the stated recoat condition.
- Drawers stick after painting: Coating may have reached adjoining edges or may not be cured enough for movement. Keep contact surfaces clean, allow the stated cure period, and avoid forcing parts together.
- Old paint flakes during preparation: Treat the coating as a safety issue, especially in a pre-1978 home. Stop dry sanding or scraping, contain the area, and obtain lead-safe guidance or professional help.
Supplies to gather
For a standard, non-lead-risk project, gather a cleaner or degreaser, suitable filler, sanding sheets, dust-removal supplies, bonding primer for laminate furniture when applicable, furniture paint, a brush, a fine-finish or mini roller, containers for screws, and a drop cloth. Buy products by category and verify that each label names your substrate.
For work that may involve lead paint, add the EPA-oriented containment and cleanup materials—plastic sheeting, tape, wet-dry sandpaper, and a HEPA vacuum—and follow current lead-safe requirements. Do not substitute a respirator for containment, dust control, and proper cleanup.
When to stop and hire help
Pause the makeover if the case is structurally unstable, water damage has swollen large panels, veneer is lifting extensively, or you cannot determine whether an old coating presents a lead hazard. A professional can assess repairs and, where relevant, perform lead-safe preparation. The cost of a failed finish is usually smaller than the cost of repeatedly sanding, replacing damaged veneer, or cleaning contaminated dust from an entryway.
