A successful entryway makeover starts with the footprint, not a shopping list. Measure the usable space, door swing, stairs and nearby storage; record what your household actually drops there; then solve the biggest problem first with storage, durable surfaces, lighting and floor protection. The sequence below works for a foyer, narrow hall, open-plan entrance or rental, and it keeps circulation usable while you work.

1. Audit the entryway before you buy anything

Stand in the doorway and look at the entrance as a working zone rather than a decorating opportunity. Measure the usable width and depth, note the door swing, and mark any closet doors, radiators, stairs, vents or furniture that compete for the same space. Record the location of existing switches, outlets and light fixtures. A measurement sketch and a few photos will prevent a bench, cabinet or console from blocking a route you use every day.

Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.

Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
  • TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

For several days, list what actually arrives at the door: everyday shoes, coats, bags, keys, mail, umbrellas, sports equipment, pet supplies and seasonal gear. Separate items that need to stay by the door from things that can move to another room. This inventory reveals whether your entry needs hanging capacity, shoe containment, a landing surface, seating, better light or simply fewer objects.

  • Traffic: Identify the path everyone must keep clear when the door is open and when two people pass.
  • Storage: Count the coats, pairs of shoes and bags used in the current season, not an imagined collection.
  • Surfaces: Look for holes, loose paint, scuffs, dampness or rough patches that must be repaired.
  • Light: Note whether daylight reaches the area and whether the existing fixture lights faces, floor and storage separately.
  • Rental limits: Check your lease before drilling, changing fixtures, applying adhesive products or altering floors.

Keep the photos and measurements on your phone while planning. They are more reliable than memory when you compare furniture dimensions or decide where a hook rail can go.

2. Choose one priority and define the makeover scope

An entry can be unattractive because of clutter, but it can also fail because there is nowhere to sit, coats are out of reach, the walls are worn or the area is dark. Pick the problem that creates the most friction. A narrow hall may need wall-mounted storage before it needs decoration; a generous foyer may benefit from a bench and a key-drop surface; a rental may need reversible changes rather than built-ins.

Make a keep, repurpose and remove list. A sound mirror, basket or small table may work after cleaning or repainting. Removing a rarely used chair can create more usable circulation than buying a smaller chair. Decide whether the project is a quick refresh, a storage reconfiguration or a full finish update, and set a spending limit for that scope.

One published makeover by The Sorry Girls planned for additional shoe storage, coat hooks, yoga-mat storage and renter-friendly work with a budget under $500. That figure describes that particular project, not a typical or current cost for every entryway. Your materials, labor, building rules and existing condition will determine the actual total.

3. Sketch storage around real clearances

Draw each proposed item on your measurement sketch before ordering it. Include the depth of baskets, cabinet doors and bench lids, and show the space needed to open the entry door and nearby doors. In a tight entrance, a slim cabinet, floating shelf, wall hooks or baskets can provide capacity without consuming the walking lane. A bench is useful only when it leaves a comfortable route around it.

Storage choice Best for Advantages Watch-outs
Wall hook rail or individual hooks Coats, bags, umbrellas and daily accessories Uses vertical space and keeps floor clear; hooks can be placed at different heights Needs a secure fixing or an approved rental-friendly method; overloaded hooks look untidy
Console or narrow shelf Keys, mail, a lamp and a small decorative display Creates a defined landing spot without requiring a deep cabinet Can become a clutter shelf; measure door and drawer projection
Bench with shoe storage Seating plus contained footwear Combines two functions and makes putting on shoes easier Requires floor space and must not interfere with door movement; ventilate damp shoes
Shoe cabinet Homes that need concealed footwear storage Reduces visual clutter and can use a narrow footprint Check internal capacity, door clearance and airflow before choosing it
Baskets or open cubbies Scarves, gloves, sports gear and children’s items Flexible, easy to label and simple to remove for cleaning Open storage needs a sorting routine; baskets still require a place to sit

For children, put frequently used items where they can reach them. Certified KonMari consultant Nancy Eaton recommends low cabinets and hooks so children can become more self-reliant, while consultant Alichia Pretorius recommends individual labeled baskets. A seat is helpful where the footprint allows it, especially for younger children or anyone who needs to sit while putting on shoes. Keep adult or guest storage separate if mixing sizes and routines causes daily confusion.

4. Plan the visual direction before selecting finishes

Use the rooms next to the entrance as your reference. An open-plan entry should relate to the living area without disappearing into it; a narrow hall can use a lighter wall color, a well-scaled mirror or a single strong artwork to feel more defined. Decide whether the entry should recede, brighten or make a deliberate first impression, then limit the palette to finishes that support that goal.

Scale matters more than the number of accessories. A mirror should suit the wall rather than fill every available inch. Artwork, a plant or one personal object can provide character after the functional pieces are in place. Leave enough wall and floor area to clean around them; a decorative item that blocks a hook or catches a bag is working against the makeover.

5. Prepare walls and complete dusty work first

Remove small furniture and protect anything that cannot leave the area. Take down wall decor, label hardware and cover floors. Repair holes, dents and loose areas before choosing a color. For larger defects, a skim coat can level the surface; once it dries, sand it smooth and remove dust. Joint-compound repairs should be primed with drywall paint or another primer recommended for the material before the decorative coat, because unprimed patches can absorb paint differently and flash through the finish.

  1. Clear or protect the work zone and remove switch plates and hardware where appropriate.
  2. Clean the walls so grease, dust and hand marks do not interfere with adhesion.
  3. Fill holes and damaged areas, allow the repair material to dry, then sand as directed.
  4. Wipe away sanding dust and inspect the wall in side light; repeat the repair if the surface still shows ridges.
  5. Prime repairs and any bare or difficult substrate according to the product instructions.
  6. Mask adjacent trim, floors and hardware only after the surface is clean and dry.

Do not paint over active dampness, peeling material or a leak. Correct the underlying problem first, or the new finish will fail regardless of color or sheen.

6. Select paint for traffic, cleaning and the existing surface

Entry walls receive more contact than most rooms. Compare products by coverage, durability, sheen and the cleaning they are expected to withstand. A washable finish can be worthwhile where bags and coats rub the wall, but the right choice also depends on how imperfections will show and what the manufacturer permits on your surface.

The Home Depot’s small-entry refresh used satin on the walls and semigloss on trim as one project example. Those sheens are not universal rules: test a sample in the actual light, check the label for recommended use and choose a finish that balances cleanability with the amount of wall texture you need to disguise. Trim may need a different product because it is touched and cleaned differently from the wall.

Paint after repairs and before installing shelves, hooks and wall decor. Cutting in around permanently mounted items makes neat edges harder and leaves hardware exposed to splatter. Keep the can label and leftover paint information for future touch-ups.

7. Install storage in a practical order

Once the paint has cured as directed, mark the hardware positions from your sketch. Use the correct fixing for the wall type and the load you expect; a hook holding a winter coat and bag needs a more secure attachment than one holding a light scarf. In a rental, use only products approved for the surface and the lease, and test removable systems exactly as instructed.

  1. Mark the centerlines and heights for hooks, shelves, cabinets and the mirror with painter’s tape.
  2. Recheck door swings, switch access and the clear walking route before drilling or bonding anything.
  3. Install the primary drop zone first: hooks for coats and bags or a cabinet for the items that create the most clutter.
  4. Add the key-and-mail surface, keeping it close enough to use when entering but away from the door’s impact zone.
  5. Place the bench or shoe storage only after confirming that doors, drawers and lids open fully.
  6. Load the system with everyday items and remove anything that does not fit the routine.

A short trial period is useful. If a hook is always missed or a basket fills with unrelated objects, move or relabel it rather than adding another storage unit.

8. Improve a dark or visually compact entrance with lighting and a mirror

A windowless entry often needs more than one light source. Wall sconces can illuminate faces and nearby walls, while an overhead fixture covers the general route. Layering those sources reduces harsh shadows around the door and makes keys, shoes and coats easier to find. If you are changing wiring or fixtures, follow local electrical requirements and use a qualified professional when the work exceeds your skills or lease permissions.

A mirror can bounce available light and provide a final-check point, but select one that is scaled to its wall and does not collide with an opening door or protruding hook. Reflective surfaces show fingerprints, so place the mirror where it can be cleaned without moving furniture.

9. Contain dirt and wet footwear at the threshold

Use an exterior mat and an interior mat as separate zones when the layout permits. A boot tray gives wet shoes a defined place during rainy or snowy weather; empty and clean it before water reaches the surrounding floor. An entry rug can catch dirt and moisture, but it should have a non-slip backing or a compatible rug pad and be sized so its edges do not become trip points.

Choose floor protection for the actual traffic and cleaning routine. A delicate textile that cannot be washed is a poor fit for a household that enters with muddy shoes. Likewise, do not hide a damaged or damp floor under a mat until the cause has been addressed.

10. Rental-friendly and quick-update options

When permanent work is restricted, concentrate on movable storage, freestanding mirrors, removable hooks approved for the wall, lighting that uses the existing outlet and textiles that can leave with you. Removable wallpaper or peel-and-stick flooring can change the look quickly, but check the substrate, traffic level, humidity and manufacturer instructions first. Products that release cleanly on one painted wall may behave differently on textured, freshly painted or sealed surfaces.

Keep samples and installation details until move-out. Photograph the original condition, avoid applying adhesive over damaged paint and remove products slowly according to the instructions. If the lease requires approval, obtain it before installation rather than relying on a claim that a product is “temporary.”

11. Troubleshoot common entryway problems

The makeover still feels crowded

Return to the circulation sketch and remove the least-used floor-standing item. Move storage upward, replace a deep piece with a slim or wall-mounted option, or reduce the number of objects displayed. A clear route is more valuable than a second decorative surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shoes spread beyond the storage

Limit the entry to the pairs used in the current season and move overflow elsewhere. Add a labeled basket for smaller footwear items, or switch to a cabinet if open shelves invite random piles. Make sure damp shoes can dry before closing them away.

Paint scuffs quickly

Check that the wall was cleaned and primed where needed, then use the mildest cleaning method allowed by the paint label. Keep the remaining paint for touch-ups and record the color and sheen. If the surface cannot tolerate routine cleaning, the finish is mismatched to the traffic and should be reconsidered at the next repaint.

Hooks or shelves pull away

Unload the item, inspect the fixing and repair the wall before reinstalling. Use hardware rated for the wall material and expected load; do not treat adhesive failure as a sign that the wall needs more weight.

The entry looks finished but does not work

Observe the first minute after someone comes home. If keys land on the floor, coats go over a chair or children cannot reach their storage, adjust placement and labels. Function is the test; decoration should support that routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Maintain the result with a small reset routine

Give every recurring item a home and reset the zone on a schedule that matches your household. Empty the key-and-mail surface, return stray shoes, shake or vacuum the rug, clean the mats and wipe high-touch areas. Rotate seasonal coats and footwear so the entry is not asked to hold everything at once. Recheck wall fixings and dampness after severe weather.

When the space starts to fail, change the system before buying more storage. The best entryway makeover is not the one with the most furniture; it is the one that lets people enter, put things away and leave again without blocking one another.
