Enviroflon 8480 is a two-pack, water-borne engineered fluoropolymer topcoat for selected masonry, laboratory, steel and noise-barrier projects. A&I Coatings supplies it as separate Part A and Part B components, with clear or pigmented options and satin or gloss finishes. The current Technical Data Sheet (QAF034, version 08) should control the specification; the Architecture & Design listing dated 7 July 2010 is historical provenance rather than a current product specification.

The coating can offer strong chemical and solvent resistance with relatively low published VOC values, but its performance depends on substrate preparation, primer compatibility, mixing, dilution and film thickness. Treat the figures below as A&I Coatings’ published data, not as an independent comparison with other coatings.
What Enviroflon 8480 is
Enviroflon 8480 is a two-component, water-borne engineered fluoropolymer protective topcoat. It is supplied in a base component (Part A) and a hardener (Part B), which are mixed immediately before application. A&I Coatings identifies four typical application areas:
- masonry;
- laboratory bench tops;
- structural and decorative steel; and
- rail or road noise walls.
Those examples describe intended markets, not permission to coat any substrate without testing. The primer, preparation standard and environmental exposure have to be matched to the actual project.
How the current product relates to the 2010 listing
The exact-title Architecture & Design page is dated 7 July 2010 and functions as an old product-news listing. It does not provide a substantive current technical specification. For present-day decisions, use A&I Coatings’ product information and the linked Enviroflon 8480 Technical Data Sheet, QAF034 version 08. The sheet’s filename is dated 2024, although the extracted document does not show a publication date.
This distinction matters because an older 2021 sheet appearing in search results contains different details, including a 50 μm minimum dry-film figure. Do not merge values from different revisions. Ask A&I Coatings to confirm the revision that applies to your project and purchase.
Finishes, colours and pack format
The manufacturer lists clear and pigmented finishes. Satin and gloss are identified in the technical sheet, and the product page also describes metallic and micaceous iron oxide (MIOX) finishes. Metallic and MIOX finishes have minimum-order requirements, so confirm the minimum quantity before preparing a colour schedule.

The product page lists 18 L kits and directs customers to A&I Coatings for other pack sizes. Confirm whether a quoted kit includes both components in the required proportion, the hardener type supplied, and the current shelf-life and storage instructions from the seller or manufacturer.
Published technical data
The following values come from A&I Coatings’ QAF034 version 08 Technical Data Sheet. They are manufacturer specifications and should be checked against the project specification and the latest controlled document.

Resolve the film-thickness discrepancy before work starts
Two A&I sources describe thickness differently. The version 08 Technical Data Sheet recommends a 75–100 μm dry film. A separate A&I application FAQ says a 125 μm wet film produces a 50 μm dry film. Those statements are not directly interchangeable: they may refer to different coats, systems or document revisions.
Do not average the numbers or convert one into the other without written confirmation. Ask A&I Coatings to state the required wet-film and dry-film targets for your substrate, primer, number of coats and exposure. Record that response in the job specification, then verify the applied film with wet- and dry-film gauges as appropriate. The manufacturer warns that an overly thin coating can lead to delamination or product failure.
Mixing and application procedure
Application is specification-dependent, but A&I’s instructions establish a clear sequence. A trained applicator should also follow the latest Technical Data Sheet, component Safety Data Sheets and the approved project method statement.

- Check the system. Confirm the substrate, primer, finish, colour, hardener type, target thickness, environmental limits and recoat plan before opening a kit. For steel systems, consult A&I about the appropriate primer and complete coating build.
- Prepare the equipment. Use a clean mixing vessel and a powered stirrer. A&I recommends a stirrer of at least 2,000 rpm; its FAQ indicates that a battery or electric drill may be suitable when fitted with an appropriate paint-mixer paddle. Secure the vessel and use equipment that will not introduce contamination.
- Mix Part A. Thoroughly power-mix the base until it is uniform, including material at the sides and bottom of the container. Scrape unmixed material into the mix only with a clean tool.
- Add Part B in the specified volume ratio. Measure the hardener accurately and combine it with Part A. Continue powered mixing until the blend is fully homogeneous. A&I’s FAQ specifically says the water must not be added before the base and hardener have been thoroughly mixed.
- Add water only after the two components are blended. Add the amount needed for the approved application viscosity, following A&I’s current instructions and the project specification. Do not use water to compensate for poor initial mixing.
- Power-stir again. After water is introduced, remix with the powered stirrer so the diluted coating is uniform. Look for consistent colour and texture, with no streaks, soft pockets or unmixed material on the vessel wall.
- Apply within the working period. Organise labour, access and the application area before mixing. Keep the batch protected from contamination and apply by the approved method while it remains usable.
- Check film build. Measure wet film during application and dry film after the appropriate cure stage. Adjust technique or coat count only against the confirmed project thickness; do not deliberately apply a thinner film to stretch coverage.
What “mixed well enough” means
A&I’s FAQ frames the practical check as uniformity after powered mixing. The material should have consistent colour and body throughout the vessel, with no visible ribbons of base, hardener or water. If the appearance is doubtful, stop and remix rather than applying a questionable batch. A small test mix or demonstration panel can help confirm the procedure before production work, but it does not replace the approved specification.
Surface preparation, primers and test patches
Enviroflon 8480 is a topcoat, so the finished result depends on the complete system. Remove contamination and prepare each substrate to the standard stated for the project. Steel normally requires a compatible primer and preparation grade selected for the exposure; A&I advises consultation for project-specific steel systems instead of prescribing one universal primer in the general product sheet.
For repaints, prepare a representative test patch first. The patch should establish adhesion, appearance, colour, drying, recoat behaviour and compatibility with the existing coating. Do not assume that a sound-looking old film will accept a water-borne fluoropolymer topcoat without testing. Masonry, laboratory surfaces and noise barriers can have very different porosity, contamination and movement, so the same preparation method should not be copied from one substrate to another.
What the performance labels do—and do not—prove
The Technical Data Sheet rates abrasion resistance and flexibility as “Very Good,” chemical and solvent resistance as “Excellent,” and salt-spray resistance as “Good.” These are A&I Coatings’ published classifications. They are not independent head-to-head test results against named competing products, and they do not guarantee a specific service life in every environment.

Safety, handling and documentation
A&I’s product page links separate Safety Data Sheets for Part A and Part B. Read both current documents before opening a kit. The Technical Data Sheet instructs users to follow the SDS and applicable regional disposal rules.
Detailed hazard classifications, personal-protective-equipment requirements, first-aid measures and storage incompatibilities were not established in the available product information, so they should not be guessed. Obtain the current component-specific SDS from A&I or the supplier and follow the stricter requirement where site rules and the SDS differ. Keep labels and batch details with the job records so an incident or quality investigation can identify exactly which components were used.
Approval and purchasing checks
The product page reports APAS AP-S1441/1 approval for Part A plus Easy Mix Hardener. Treat that as a component-specific statement; do not extend it automatically to another hardener, colour, primer or complete system. If an approval is required by a contract or authority, ask for the current certification record and verify that the proposed formulation matches it.
Before ordering, confirm:
- the controlled Technical Data Sheet revision;
- the exact Part A and Part B quantities and hardener type;
- the colour and finish, including any minimum order for metallic or MIOX options;
- the required pack size and availability; and
- the current SDS documents, batch information and delivery conditions.
A specialist New Zealand retailer has listed E8480, but its page contains inconsistent descriptive copy. Use A&I Coatings to verify product identity and specifications, then confirm stock, price and kit contents directly with the seller.
How to compare Enviroflon 8480 with another coating
No controlled comparison with a named alternative is established here. A useful comparison should be made at system level, not by reading one marketing adjective against another. Put the following questions in the specification:

- Which preparation standard and primer are approved?
- What chemical, solvent, salt, abrasion, ultraviolet and temperature exposure is expected?
- What wet- and dry-film targets, coat count, cure and recoat intervals apply?
- Will the finish be clear, pigmented, satin, gloss, metallic or MIOX?
- Can the application crew mix and apply a two-pack material within its working period?
- What VOC limit, approval, kit size, colour availability and technical support are required?
- How will graffiti, stains or damaged areas be cleaned and repaired?
Only a comparison using the same preparation, primer, film build, cure and test conditions can support a meaningful performance decision.
Common failure points and corrective actions
Water was added too early
Stop the batch and seek technical direction. A&I’s stated sequence is to mix base and hardener thoroughly before adding water, then power-stir again. Do not assume extra mixing will make an incorrectly prepared batch acceptable.

The coating is too thin
Measure rather than judge by appearance. An under-thickness film can contribute to delamination or product failure. Hold the work, document the readings and obtain the approved repair or additional-coat procedure.
Adhesion is poor on a repaint
Quarantine the area and investigate preparation, contamination, existing-coating compatibility, primer selection and cure. Use the results of a representative test patch to decide whether removal, additional preparation or a different system is required.
Colour or sheen is inconsistent
Check that the correct finish and colour were ordered, that Part A and the selected hardener were mixed uniformly, and that dilution and film build were consistent. Metallic and MIOX finishes can require especially careful application planning and have minimum-order conditions.
The batch cannot be used before its working period ends
Do not extend usability by adding unapproved water or hardener. Organise smaller batches, additional applicators or a revised work sequence before mixing the next kit, and follow A&I’s advice for any material already prepared.
Bottom line for specifiers and applicators
Enviroflon 8480 is a versatile, water-borne two-pack fluoropolymer topcoat with published uses across masonry, laboratory bench tops, steel and noise barriers. Its useful properties are conditional on the complete coating system: correct primer and preparation, accurate component measurement, the manufacturer’s mixing sequence and verified film thickness. Use QAF034 version 08 and the current SDS documents as the starting point, resolve the conflicting thickness instructions with A&I before work, and treat all performance ratings as manufacturer data rather than independent comparative proof.
