Enviroflon 8480 is described by its manufacturer, A&I Coatings, as a water-borne, two-part engineered fluoropolymer coating. What Enviroflon 8480 is

That product identity matters when you write a specification or approve a substitute. “Polyurethane” appears in some third-party product wording, but the manufacturer’s own current description is the controlling reference for formulation, component compatibility, application limits and certification. Ask the manufacturer or distributor to confirm the exact chemistry and component names on the kit and the technical data sheet revision supplied with it.

These are manufacturer-stated uses, not blanket approval for every surface in those categories. Porosity, previous coatings, contamination, movement, corrosion, expected cleaning, exposure and the chosen primer can change the recommendation. The technical data sheet also lists bricks among surfaces for which the coating is not suitable. Consequently, “masonry” should never be read as automatic approval for brickwork: obtain a substrate-specific decision from A&I Coatings’ technical team before including Enviroflon 8480 in a brick or mixed-masonry specification.
For a project submittal, identify the substrate, existing coating, exposure, finish and cleaning regime, then have the complete primer/topcoat system approved. The topcoat’s stated use does not replace a project-specific adhesion test or preparation specification.
What performance A&I Coatings claims
The manufacturer promotes Enviroflon 8480 for graffiti resistance, weather resistance, ultraviolet resistance, colour retention and chemical resistance. These are manufacturer claims; they should not be rewritten as independent test results or as a guarantee for a particular facade. Ask for the current test reports, approval conditions and cleaning instructions that apply to the proposed colour and finish.

A&I Coatings states that APAS AP-S1441/1 certification is approved for Part A used with Easy Mix Hardener. The certification statement therefore applies to that named component combination. It should not automatically be extended to a different hardener, tint base, metallic variant or locally substituted component.
A facade resource from the manufacturer says that fluoropolymers such as Vitreflon and Enviroflon “typically give fifteen years plus service.” This is a generalized statement about a product category and exposure context, not an Enviroflon 8480 warranty, independently measured service-life result or promise for a specific building. Actual durability depends on preparation, film build, detailing, weather, cleaning and maintenance.

How the coating system is specified
Enviroflon 8480 should be treated as the topcoat in a defined coating system. The current technical data sheet controls the primer, number of coats, mix ratio, film build, recoat interval, cure conditions and permitted application equipment for the particular kit and colour.

- Primer compatibility: use only the primer or primer family identified by the current A&I Coatings system specification for the substrate.
- Components: verify the Part A and hardener names, batch numbers, colour base and intended finish before mixing.
- Colour variant: solid-colour and metallic products can have different mix instructions and handling requirements.
- Film build: measure wet and, where required, dry film thickness rather than relying on a visual estimate.
- Approval scope: keep the certification and data-sheet revision with the project submittal so the approved component combination is traceable.
Do not copy a ratio or curing schedule from an older sheet, a different colour or another two-pack product. A&I Coatings has published more than one data-sheet revision with differing technical values, so the revision applicable to the supplied kit is decisive.
Mixing Enviroflon 8480
Mixing is a practical control point: poor dispersion or an incorrect component ratio can produce short pot life, soft film, colour variation, poor adhesion or premature failure. The manufacturer calls for thorough power stirring of Parts A and B and recommends a stirrer of at least 2,000 rpm.
- Read the current sheet first. Confirm the ratio for the exact solid-colour or metallic product, induction or waiting requirements, permitted thinner (if any), pot life and application window. Do not infer these values from a previous revision.
- Check the kit. Confirm that Part A and the specified water-dispersible isocyanate hardener are present, unopened or within the stated use period, and from the same approved system. Record batch numbers for the job file.
- Condition the materials. Bring both components to the temperature required by the current data sheet. Cold or overheated material changes viscosity and working time.
- Pre-stir Part A. Use a clean container and a compatible power mixer. Stir thoroughly until colour and consistency are uniform, taking care not to whip unnecessary air into the coating.
- Add the hardener at the specified ratio. Measure by the method stated on the current sheet. Never estimate by eye or substitute a different isocyanate hardener.
- Power-mix the combined material. Use the manufacturer’s recommended mixer speed—at least 2,000 rpm is stated in the application guidance—and scrape the container sides and bottom as directed.
- Observe any required stand time. If the current revision specifies an induction period, allow it before application; if it does not, do not invent one.
- Label and time the batch. Write the mix time on the container. The pot-life clock starts when the components are combined, not when the first roller is loaded.
- Discard expired material. Do not add water or fresh hardener to revive a batch that has exceeded its stated pot life.
A drill mixer marketed for paint can be a suitable task-enabling tool when it meets the manufacturer’s speed and cleanliness requirements, but no particular mixer model is established as tested or endorsed. Use equipment that can safely maintain the required speed without damaging the coating or creating excessive entrained air.

Application sequence
The exact sequence, coverage and recoat timing belong to the current technical data sheet. The following workflow explains how to organize the work without replacing that document.
- Inspect and document the substrate. Check soundness, moisture, contamination, salts, oil, laitance, rust, sharp edges, cracks and previous coatings. Photograph defects and agree on repairs before coating.
- Prepare the surface. Use the preparation method specified for the substrate and primer. Remove dust and residues after mechanical preparation; a clean-looking surface is not proof of adequate adhesion.
- Prime as specified. Apply the approved primer at its stated thickness and allow it to reach the recoat condition required by that primer’s data sheet. Do not apply the fluoropolymer topcoat directly to an unapproved surface.
- Verify site conditions. Check substrate and air temperature, dew-point relationship, ventilation and relative humidity. The manufacturer’s data lists a maximum of 85% relative humidity; confirm the complete environmental limits in the current revision before starting.
- Choose the application method. One data sheet describes brush and roller application, while manufacturer guidance discusses spray equipment. Select the method permitted for the supplied variant and project, and confirm nozzle, pressure, thinning and overspray controls from the current instructions.
- Apply the mixed topcoat. Work in manageable sections within the pot life. Maintain a wet edge, avoid overworking, and record batch, start time and area covered.
- Measure film build. Use a wet-film gauge while the coating is workable and verify dry-film thickness after cure when the specification requires it. Coverage is a planning figure, not permission to stretch the material below the required build.
- Respect the recoat and cure window. Protect the film from rain, condensation, dust, traffic and chemical exposure until the current sheet says it has cured sufficiently. If the recoat window is missed, follow the specified preparation before adding another coat.
Technical values that need revision control
The figures below are useful planning references from an A&I Coatings 2024 data-sheet search result, but the manufacturer has exposed older and newer sheets with different values. Confirm every figure against the current revision supplied for the kit before it is used in a contract, estimate or method statement.

Recoat intervals, final cure times, exact mix ratios, permitted thinning, wet- and dry-film targets and volatile-organic-compound values should be copied only from the applicable current data sheet. They are not safely interchangeable between revisions or colour variants.

Limitations and failure risks
- Brickwork: the data sheet lists the coating as unsuitable for bricks, despite the broader masonry application category. Obtain written substrate approval before proceeding.
- Tank linings: the manufacturer does not recommend the coating for tank linings. A facade or bench-top use should not be extrapolated to immersion service.
- Humidity: application above 85% relative humidity is not permitted according to the stated limitation. Condensation can still cause failure below that threshold if the substrate is at or below dew point.
- Wrong hardener: using a non-approved hardener can invalidate the stated APAS component scope and alter cure and durability.
- Expired mixed material: exceeding pot life can leave a film that appears workable but no longer cures as specified.
- Insufficient preparation: fluoropolymer performance cannot compensate for oil, dust, salts, unstable previous paint or an unsuitable primer.
- Uncontrolled film build: excessive or inadequate thickness can affect appearance, drying and long-term performance.
Procurement and project documentation
The official product information lists an 18 L kit and advises contacting A&I Coatings about other sizes. A specialist New Zealand retailer has listed an E8480 kit, but that listing does not establish current stock in every country or for every colour. Treat availability, lead time, tinting and shipping as items to confirm at quotation stage.
A complete purchase or submittal package should identify the product variant, colour, component combination, kit size, current technical-data-sheet revision, primer, application method, expected coverage, environmental limits and disposal requirements. Request confirmation that the supplied hardener is the one covered by the stated APAS approval when certification is part of the specification.
How to compare Enviroflon 8480 with another facade topcoat
A meaningful comparison is a system-to-system exercise, not a comparison of marketing adjectives. Use the same substrate, exposure and maintenance assumptions for each candidate.

Practical approval checklist
- Confirm A&I Coatings’ current product identity and data-sheet revision.
- Confirm the exact substrate; do not assume that a masonry approval includes brick.
- Obtain the approved primer and complete coating-system sequence.
- Verify Part A, hardener, colour variant and certification scope.
- Plan a clean power mixer capable of the recommended stirring speed.
- Record mix ratio, batch time, pot life, coverage and film thickness during application.
- Measure relative humidity and other environmental conditions before and during coating.
- Agree on inspection, repair, recoat and cure requirements before handover.
- Keep the technical sheet, batch records and application log with the project close-out documents.
Bottom line for specifiers and applicators
Enviroflon 8480 is best understood as a manufacturer-specified, water-borne two-part fluoropolymer topcoat—not as a universally interchangeable polyurethane paint. Its stated facade-related uses and claimed resistance properties can make it suitable for demanding projects, but only when the substrate, primer, approved components, mixing, film build and site conditions match the current A&I Coatings documentation. Confirm the revision, follow the complete system specification and treat service-life and performance statements as qualified manufacturer claims rather than guarantees.
