Environ 1000 is a legacy SES Lighting floodlight system documented for tennis courts, but the available evidence does not prove that it is still sold or supported as a current product. An older catalogue lists 1,000 W high-pressure sodium (HPS) and metal-halide versions, with a 33 kg, IP54 enclosure. Those figures can help identify an existing installation; they are not a present-day specification or recommendation. A new domestic or club court needs a site-specific photometric design that sets the playing class, illuminance, uniformity, glare, colour quality, spill light, pole structure and local approvals before anyone chooses a lamp count.

What Environ 1000 is—and what the published record does not prove
Environ 1000 was presented as a full-cut-off floodlight range from SES Lighting for applications including car parks, parks, community gardens and tennis courts. “Full cut-off” describes an optical aim intended to keep light above the horizontal under the stated classification, reducing light directed toward neighbouring properties and the sky. The catalogue also describes high illuminance and uniform distribution across a surface.

The product-news item that names tennis courts is dated 17 February 2010. The surviving catalogue is older, with no confirmed publication year in the available excerpt. A business-directory entry updated 30 January 2025 describes SES Lighting as manufacturing, installing and maintaining sports lighting and distributing Environ systems, but a directory description is not a current manufacturer datasheet, stock notice or warranty. Treat Environ 1000 as a documented legacy model until SES Lighting confirms the exact product, replacement parts and service status for your project.

Historical Environ 1000 specifications
These are the values printed in the catalogue, not verified current specifications. They are useful when surveying an existing luminaire or asking a supplier to identify an equivalent.

The catalogue says brackets coded for 100 mm square or round poles can be adapted to 90 mm poles by replacing “100” with “90” in the catalogue code. That is a catalogue note, not permission to modify a bracket without checking the complete part number, fasteners, wall thickness, pole manufacturer and structural calculations with the supplier.
Choose the playing standard before choosing the lights
Lamp count is not a lighting design. The target depends on who plays, whether competition is sanctioned, the viewing distance, television or streaming requirements, surrounding darkness and local limits on glare and spill. A 2025 LIGMAN brochure reproduces figures it attributes to EN 12193:2007. The brochure is a secondary source and does not establish the current edition of the standard or a legal requirement in your jurisdiction.

Use those numbers as a conversation starter with a lighting designer, not as a blanket compliance statement. Ask the designer to verify the current standard edition, the rules of the relevant tennis body, measurement grids, maintenance factor, glare method, vertical illumination where players track a high ball, and the planning authority’s spill-light limits. A design that reaches an average lux figure but has dark corners, excessive glare or bright windows can still fail in practical use.
Published Environ layouts are examples, not templates
The same 2025 brochure illustrates four Environ 1000 units for a residential single-court example. Its twin-court examples show ten units on nine poles for a standard arrangement and twelve units on nine poles for a deluxe arrangement.

Do not copy these counts into a quotation without a calculation. Court orientation, pole setbacks, mounting height, surrounding trees and buildings, surface reflectance, aiming restrictions and the required class can change the result substantially. The brochure also contrasts traditional metal-halide installations with LED and notes that staged lighting can be more flexible with LED. That comparison does not confirm a current Environ 1000 LED version or prove equal performance in every installation.

How to specify an Environ 1000 replacement or new court
- Define use. Record the number of courts, playing hours, coaching and competition levels, spectators, livestreaming or television needs, and whether neighbours are sensitive to light.
- Confirm the target class and rules. Have the designer check the current applicable standard, governing-body rules, planning conditions and any environmental or aviation restrictions. Keep the selected class in the project brief.
- Survey the site. Map court lines, run-off areas, pole locations, property boundaries, windows, roads, trees, overhead cables and existing electrical supplies. Measure existing pole diameter, shape, wall thickness and foundation condition.
- Request photometric files and calculations. Ask for the exact luminaire model, optical distribution, aiming coordinates, average and minimum illuminance, uniformity, glare assessment, spill-light contours and maintenance factor. A lamp wattage alone cannot supply these results.
- Check structure and mounting. A 33 kg catalogue luminaire can impose significant bending and wind loads at height. The engineer should check pole, outreach arm, bracket, anchor bolts and foundation for the local wind code, not merely verify that the bracket fits a nominal 90 or 100 mm pole.
- Design controls and circuits. Separate courts or playing zones so users can light only what they need. Confirm whether the equipment supports dimming, step levels, contactors, surge protection, remote monitoring and a safe isolation point. Do not assume a legacy discharge fitting can be dimmed like a modern LED driver.
- Verify electrical capacity. Four 1,000 W lamps represent 4 kW of lamp load before ballast losses; actual demand, starting current and phase balance depend on the gear and supply. An electrician should size protective devices, cables, earthing, voltage drop and metering from the confirmed equipment data.
- Commission and measure. After aiming, measure the agreed grid with calibrated equipment, record glare and spill observations, and retain the as-built aiming schedule. Re-aiming one fitting can affect several court zones and neighbouring properties.
Mounting, aiming and spill-light control
Full cut-off optics help, but they do not remove the need for careful geometry. A fitting can be full cut-off and still create nuisance glare if it is aimed into a player’s line of sight or reflected from a light-coloured facade. Pole height, setback and outreach determine whether the beam reaches the baseline and service boxes without steep contrasts.
- Keep pole positions outside run-off zones and protect them from racket and maintenance traffic.
- Use independent aiming hardware or locked adjustment so vibration and servicing do not change the beam.
- Check sightlines from the baseline, net and adjacent courts, not only from the centre of the court.
- Model windows, roads and neighbouring gardens in the spill-light calculation; a sharp cut-off is not a guarantee of planning approval.
- Provide safe access for cleaning and relamping, including isolation, fall protection and traffic control where required.
The directory listing says Environ 1000/1500 systems were intended for mounting heights up to 8 m and that sharp cut-off limits spill under normal conditions. That is a directory claim, not an independently verified performance limit. Treat 8 m as a question for the designer, not an automatic height to use.
HPS and metal-halide: legacy choices to identify, not automatically repeat
HPS and metal-halide are the two lamp types named in the older Environ catalogue. They require warm-up and restrike time, use separate control gear and normally consume substantially more energy than a comparably designed modern LED system. Metal-halide generally offers whiter light and better colour than HPS, while HPS is associated with a warmer, amber appearance; the actual result depends on the lamp and ballast.

For an existing court, identify the lamp, ballast, ignitor and control cabinet before ordering replacements. Mixing lamp types or wattages without the correct gear can cause unsafe operation, poor colour, failure to start or damage. For a new project, ask for a current LED alternative and a like-for-like comparison covering maintained lux, uniformity, glare, energy, controls, warranty, spare parts and total cost of ownership. The available material does not establish that SES Lighting currently sells an Environ 1000 LED conversion.

Outdoor tennis lighting loses performance through lamp ageing, dirt on the optic, corrosion, vegetation growth and small changes in aiming. Include a maintenance factor in the design rather than commissioning at the bare minimum. Keep a register of lamp type, installation date, run hours, faults, cleaning and measured illuminance.
- Inspect lenses, seals, brackets, bolts, cable glands and earthing at a frequency set by the installer and local conditions.
- Replace lamps and ignitors in a planned group where discharge-lamp availability and access costs make spot replacement uneconomic.
- After any bracket, pole or luminaire work, verify aiming and check spill toward homes and roads.
- Test residual-current protection, surge protection and emergency isolation according to the electrical regulations that apply locally.
- Record complaints and operating times; staged controls can reduce unnecessary hours if the installed system supports them.

- What is the current datasheet, photometric file, optical distribution, ingress rating, wind rating and warranty for the offered unit?
- Are the 1,000 W HPS and metal-halide versions still available, and what control gear and spare parts remain?
- Which brackets fit the proposed pole diameter and shape, and has the complete assembly been structurally rated for the site’s wind conditions?
- Can SES provide a signed photometric design for the selected court class, including uniformity, glare and spill-light results?
- What are the supply, installation, commissioning, maintenance and lamp-replacement costs, and what response time applies to faults?
- Can the controls provide separate courts, reduced training levels or scheduling without shortening equipment life?
Availability, pricing and compliance limitations
No current price, inventory record, warranty term, manufacturer technical page, project calculation or affiliate arrangement is established by the available sources. The 2010 product-news page proves that the product was promoted then; the 2025 directory proves only that a listing describing SES Lighting and Environ systems was updated, not that a specific Environ 1000 can be purchased today.
Before planning approval or construction, obtain a dated quotation and current technical documents directly from the supplier or an authorised installer. Have an independent lighting designer and structural engineer review the proposal when the court is near homes, roads, protected land or public venues. Compliance is determined by the current standard, local authority and project rules—not by the product name or a brochure’s example lamp count.
Bottom line for a domestic or club court
Environ 1000 can be a useful identification point for an older SES Lighting installation: the catalogue records 1,000 W HPS and metal-halide variants, IP54, 33 kg and 850 × 650 × 270 mm, with brackets for several pole arrangements. It is not enough evidence to specify a new court in 2026. Confirm current availability first, then select the playing class, model the court and surroundings, verify structure and electrical capacity, and commission against measured illuminance, uniformity, glare and spill-light targets.
