Escea calls the product a “Contemporary see-through gas fireplace, connecting spaces with a frameless window of flame.” That is manufacturer language, not an independent performance test. The impression of drama in any individual house depends on the opening’s size, the room proportions, finishes, lighting and the position from which people see it.
For a project-specific account, readers should distinguish this unidentified feature from a separate Escea case study published by EBOSS in February 2016. That article documents Jenny and Tim’s first Christchurch home, where an Escea DX1500 sat between the lounge and dining areas and was paired with multiroom heat ducting. It is useful local context, but there is no evidence that it is the same house described by the headline.
Why a double-sided fire creates a stronger focal point
It divides space without closing it off
A conventional chimney breast or solid partition gives each room its own boundary. A see-through fire keeps the boundary but replaces an opaque section with a controlled view of flame. Escea DS Series: models and shared features
Escea’s New Zealand DS Series page lists four double-sided models: DS1150, DS1400, DS1650 and DS1900. The same page describes the range as suitable for natural gas, propane or ULPG and presents a frameless-glass format. It also states that the fireplaces are room-sealed, zero-clearance rated and use flexible flue technology. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not remove the need to follow the current technical manual for the chosen model.

The public product page names the models and shared characteristics but does not provide a complete, side-by-side set of numerical specifications. Do not infer that a larger model automatically suits a particular room, or that all four models share identical clearances and flue arrangements.
Escea’s builder-and-architect information sheet for the DS1150 is a useful example of the kind of document required at design stage: DS1150 information sheet. For a real project, request the current sheet and installation manual for the exact model and fuel type.
How to choose the right DS model for a home
Start with the opening, not the heat claim
Measure the wall available between the two rooms, the desired viewing width and the height at which the flame should be seen from seated and standing positions. A model that is visually too small can look lost in a broad opening; one that is too large may dominate circulation or leave inadequate space for joinery and services. Record finished dimensions, not just the rough framing cavity.
Match output to the actual rooms
Ask the installer or designer for the model’s rated heat output and the area or volume it is intended to serve. Room height, insulation, glazing, orientation and whether doors remain open all affect the result. A double-sided fire may be visible in two spaces without heating both spaces evenly, particularly when one room is larger or separated by a doorway.

Confirm fuel and supply
The DS Series page lists natural gas, propane and ULPG. Confirm which fuel is available at the property, whether pressure and supply capacity are adequate, and whether conversion or a different appliance configuration is required. Fuel compatibility on a general product page is not a substitute for the model’s approved setup.

Flexible flue technology can broaden layout options, but it does not mean every route is possible. The roof or wall termination, vertical and horizontal sections, penetrations, service access and required clearances must be drawn before framing. Have the installer review the route while the architect can still move the wall or roof structure.
Specify the visible finish
Decide whether the opening will be completely frameless, use a selected fascia, or sit within stone, plasterboard, brick or another surround. Select the fuelbed and surrounding material together: a dark recess absorbs light and emphasises the flame, while pale reflective finishes can make the whole opening brighter. Allow for cleaning access and for any trim that must remain removable.
Installation sequence and checks
A double-sided gas fire should be treated as a coordinated building element. The following sequence keeps design, gas, structural and finishing decisions aligned:
- Confirm the wall’s role. Establish whether it is load-bearing, a fire-rated separation, an external wall or a services chase. The appliance’s zero-clearance rating is a manufacturer classification, not permission to ignore the wall’s structural or fire-performance requirements.
- Select the exact model and fuel. Obtain the current model drawing, installation manual and technical data. Record the finished opening, cavity dimensions, service zones and access requirements on the architectural set.
- Design the flue and termination. Show every bend, penetration and termination on the plan and section. Check clearances to roofs, windows, eaves and neighbouring elements with the qualified installer and the applicable New Zealand requirements.
- Coordinate gas and electrical services. Confirm pipe sizing, isolation, control location and any power requirement before linings are closed. Keep shut-off and service components accessible as required by the manual.
- Build the cavity to the approved details. Use the specified framing, lining, non-combustible materials and clearances. Do not substitute a generic fireplace cavity detail for the DS model’s drawing.
- Install and commission through qualified trades. A licensed gasfitter or appropriately qualified installer should connect, test and commission the appliance. Keep commissioning records and the final manual with the house documents.
- Finish only after inspection. Complete plaster, stone, tile, paint and joinery after the appliance and flue have been checked. Preserve removable panels and the service access shown in the installation information.
Local consent, inspection and certification obligations can vary with the building and installation. The owner, designer and installer should confirm the current requirements for the Christchurch property rather than relying on a product description.

Price: what the displayed figure does and does not include
Escea’s New Zealand product page displays the DS Series as “From $14,995 NZD + Extras*.” That is a starting price shown by the manufacturer, not an installed quotation. The page separately identifies flue and installation, fascia, fuelbeds and accessories as extras. It does not establish the price of each model, the cost of a particular flue route, labour, building work, gas connection, controls, finishing or consent-related work.
Use the figure only as an initial product-budget marker. Ask for a written quote that names the model, fuel, firebox, flue components, termination, fascia or trim, fuelbed, controls, delivery, installation, finishing and taxes. Confirm the currency, market and date because displayed prices and available configurations can change. The current range and price are on Escea’s DS Series page.
The separate 2016 Christchurch example
In the February 2016 EBOSS case study, Jenny and Tim placed an Escea DX1500 between their lounge and dining areas. The article says the arrangement maintained views between those spaces and describes multiroom heat ducting elsewhere in the home. That combination illustrates two different design decisions: the double-sided fire creates the shared focal point, while ducting distributes heat beyond the immediate rooms.
Jenny’s comments belong only to that documented project: “We never wanted to jeopardise having our double sided gas fire,” she says. “We had our heart set on this right from the beginning and thought that if we are building then this is our priority.” The case study is available at EBOSS’s February 2016 project article. It should not be presented as evidence about the unidentified Architecture & Design home, and the DX1500 should not be treated as one of the current DS models without confirmation.

Design decisions that determine whether the result feels dramatic
Line up the views
Draw sightlines from the principal chair, dining seats, kitchen work zone and the approach to the room. A beautiful fire that is visible only from one corner will not deliver the intended two-room effect. Keep tall storage, curtains and screens outside the main viewing cones.

Control competing focal points
If a television, artwork or a large window already dominates one side, decide which element should lead. The fire can share attention with a view, but placing several bright or moving features directly opposite one another can make the room feel unsettled. A restrained surround and carefully positioned lighting allow the flame to carry the visual emphasis.
Design for daylight and night-time
Glass can reflect windows and downlights during the day. Test samples and mock up the opening at likely eye level before fixing the final finish. At night, dimmable ambient lighting and a darker recess generally make the flame easier to read without turning the fire into the only source of light.
Keep maintenance in the composition
Glass, fuelbed and the surrounding finish need periodic care. Provide a practical route to the service area and avoid permanently fixed joinery that blocks the access shown in the manual. Maintenance planning protects both appearance and safe operation.
Questions to resolve before signing off the design
- Which exact DS model is being quoted, and are all dimensions taken from the current manual?
- Is the selected fuel available at the Christchurch address at the required pressure and capacity?
- Where does the flue terminate, and has the complete route been checked against the building and manufacturer’s requirements?
- What is included in the price, and which items remain extras?
- How will each room be heated, and is separate distribution or another heat source needed?
- Can the fire, flue and controls be serviced without removing permanent finishes?
- Which claims describe this particular home, and which are only general DS Series information?
Bottom line for the Christchurch headline
An Escea double-sided fireplace can create drama by making a dividing wall useful from both sides: it frames flame, preserves a visual connection and gives adjacent rooms a common centre. The DS Series offers four listed sizes and manufacturer-described room-sealed, zero-clearance and flexible-flue features, but the correct model, flue, finish, heat strategy and installed cost must be established from current project documents. Because the named Architecture & Design home has not been verified, the responsible account is an explanation of that architectural potential—not an invented reconstruction of its rooms or occupants.
