In Emma Hoyle Interiors’ renovation of a 1910 villa, the fireplace does more than provide a visual finish. It establishes the living room’s centre of gravity: a place that can support conversation, entertaining and quiet time without making the room feel over-designed. The documented scheme combines a gas fireplace identified by Escea as the DF960 with a custom Arabescato marble hearth, a deliberately restrained surround and furniture arranged to face the room’s social centre.
The project is useful because it shows how a fireplace can connect a period home’s proportions with contemporary living. The strongest lesson is not a particular product specification, but the coordination of scale, material, circulation and use. The manufacturer identifies the model; the designer’s account supplies the custom architectural details and explains why the fireplace became the family’s gathering point.

The renovation behind the fireplace
Emma Hoyle Interiors documented the project as “A 1910 Villa Renovation” on 17 August 2022. The clients were weighing two very different paths: make a few tidy-up changes and sell, or undertake a substantial renovation that would give the house a new life. The living room became a test of the second approach. It needed to feel considered enough for entertaining while remaining comfortable for everyday relaxation.
That brief matters because the fireplace was not treated as an isolated decorative object. Its design was developed alongside the floor, seating, storage and room layout. The result is a composition in which the fire helps organise the room, rather than competing with the architecture or forcing every seat into a formal arrangement.

Why the fireplace became the living room’s anchor
The designer describes the fireplace as an anchor and focal point that creates “tone and solace.” In the same project account, it is described as “timeless in its aesthetic” and as designating a gathering point for the family. Those phrases are project language, not a measured performance claim, but they explain the design intention precisely: the fire gives the room an emotional and visual centre.
A successful anchor performs several jobs at once. It gives the eye a first destination when someone enters, provides a stable reference for arranging furniture and creates a reason for people to orient themselves toward one another. In this villa, those jobs support the dual brief. A room planned only for entertaining can feel exposed when the guests leave; one planned only for lounging can lack a clear sense of occasion. The fireplace helps the same space accommodate both modes.
The project page presents the longer statement as a client quotation but does not identify the speaker. It should therefore be read as the clients’ or project team’s description of the room’s intended atmosphere, not as an independently measured assessment.
The custom material details
Arabescato marble hearth
The documented hearth is custom Arabescato marble. In this project, the hearth adds a layer of veining, brightness and visual weight at floor level. It also gives the fireplace a clear boundary: the eye can distinguish the fire zone from the timber floor and from the furnishings that sit around it.
Because the hearth was commissioned for this room, its presence should not be mistaken for a standard feature of every DF960 installation. The designer’s account is describing a bespoke interior decision. Anyone using the project as inspiration should separate the material idea—using a carefully selected stone plane to ground the fire—from the exact slab, edge treatment or dimensions used in this villa.

A surround related to the existing skirting
The surround was custom designed with squarer, staggered shapes and a narrow mantle. Its proportions were chosen to relate to the room’s existing skirting boards while avoiding a heavy projection into the living area. That relationship is important in a period renovation: the new fireplace does not pretend that the room has no history, but it also does not reproduce a historic surround as a piece of scenery.
The staggered geometry supplies detail without requiring ornate carving. The narrow mantle keeps the horizontal line light, so the surround can read as architectural framing rather than a large shelf. Together, those decisions allow the hearth and surround to provide material contrast while preserving visual breathing room around the fire.
How the rest of the room supports the focal point
Timber flooring replaces carpet
The renovation replaced carpet with timber flooring. That change gives the room a more continuous surface and lets the hearth register as a deliberate interruption in the floor plane. Timber also supplies warmth and texture beneath the marble, preventing the stone from becoming the only material that attracts attention.
Furniture is arranged for two kinds of use
Refreshed furnishings and a revised layout were part of the living-area work. A large custom corner sofa provides generous everyday seating while helping define the room’s orientation. Its geometry can support a conversation among several people without turning the fireplace into a formal, single-direction viewing wall.

This is a useful distinction when planning a fire-centred room. The focal point should be visible from the principal seats, but circulation should remain comfortable and the room should not become a corridor between the sofa and the hearth. The documented layout shows the fireplace working with the seating plan rather than dictating every dimension.
Cabinetry creates a balanced frame
Bespoke cabinetry flanks the fireplace. Side-by-side storage gives the central composition useful function and helps the fire feel integrated into the wall. It also prevents the fireplace from appearing like a freestanding insert placed in front of an otherwise unrelated room.

The cabinetry is described as bespoke, so its exact joinery, internal storage and finish should not be inferred. The transferable principle is the use of side elements to establish visual balance and to absorb practical storage needs that might otherwise produce clutter around the focal point.
Where the “timeless” quality comes from
Proportion rather than decoration
The project’s timeless effect is best understood as a proportioning strategy. The surround is shaped around the existing skirting, the mantle is kept narrow and the hearth supplies a strong but controlled base. None of those choices depends on a short-lived decorative motif. They are decisions about relationships between vertical lines, horizontal lines and depth.

A 1910 villa carries an established architectural language. The renovation does not erase that language, because the surround acknowledges the skirting boards already in the room. At the same time, the staggered square forms are clearly contemporary. This balance lets the fireplace read as a new intervention that belongs to the house’s current life.
Material contrast is kept purposeful
Timber, marble, cabinetry and the fireplace surround each have a distinct role. Timber spreads across the floor, marble anchors the fire, cabinetry supplies storage and the surround frames the opening. The room gains richness from the contrast, but the materials are not competing for separate focal status.
Which Escea fireplace is identified in the project
Escea’s New Zealand project listing identifies the installed appliance as an Escea DF960 gas fireplace. The designer’s own project page does not name the model, so the model attribution belongs to Escea rather than to Emma Hoyle Interiors’ narrative.
The identification confirms the product phrase associated with this project, but it does not establish that the custom hearth, surround, cabinetry or mantle are factory-supplied components. Those details come from the interior design account and should be treated as part of this villa’s bespoke build.

What the published account does—and does not—tell you
The project documentation supports a clear design reading, but it is not a technical product review. It establishes the following:
- The villa dates to 1910 and underwent a significant renovation.
- The living area was intended for both entertaining and relaxing.
- The fireplace was treated as an anchor and family gathering point.
- The hearth is custom Arabescato marble.
- The surround uses squarer, staggered shapes and a narrow mantle related to the existing skirting boards.
- Escea identifies the installed model as the DF960 gas fireplace.
It does not provide a verified installation price, heating-output figure, efficiency result, running-cost estimate, room-size rating or comparison with another fireplace model. No project statistic establishes how much energy the appliance uses or how evenly it heats the room. Those questions require model documentation and a site-specific assessment rather than an inference from photographs or design language.

A practical design method inspired by the villa
The project can be translated into a sequence of design decisions without copying its exact finishes.
- Define the room’s two primary uses. Decide where people will sit during an ordinary evening and how the layout should work when guests arrive. A fireplace can anchor both situations, but the clearances and circulation need to be resolved before the surround is drawn.
- Choose the visual centre. Establish whether the fire opening, the stone hearth or the entire fireplace wall should command attention. In the villa, the focal point is the complete composition rather than the flame alone.
- Relate new work to an existing line. Identify a skirting, dado, doorway or ceiling detail that the surround can acknowledge. This gives a new intervention a measured connection to the building instead of making it look dropped in.
- Set the projection deliberately. A narrow mantle and restrained depth can preserve floor area and reduce visual bulk. The required construction depth, ventilation and clearances must still be confirmed for the selected appliance by the installer.
- Use one grounding material. A custom stone hearth is one option; another project might use a different durable, code-compliant finish. The key is to give the fire a legible base that meets the floor cleanly.
- Design storage at the same time. Flanking cabinetry can hide practical items and balance the composition. Its height, ventilation and access should be coordinated with the fireplace specification rather than added after the wall is finished.
- Test the view from every important seat. Check sightlines from the sofa, likely conversation positions and the room entrance. A focal point that works from only one chair will not serve a multi-use living room well.
Questions to resolve before specifying a similar installation
Questions for the fireplace specialist
- Which DF960 configuration is available for the project’s region and fuel supply?
- What installation clearances, flue route, ventilation provisions and non-combustible-zone requirements apply?
- What documentation covers heat output, efficiency and controls for the exact model and configuration?
- Which parts must be completed by an authorised or qualified installer, and what commissioning records will be supplied?
Questions for the designer and builder
- How will the hearth edge meet the timber floor, and which movement or transition detail is required?
- How far can the surround and mantle project without compromising circulation or appliance requirements?
- Will the cabinetry remain visually balanced if the wall has to accommodate access panels or service zones?
- Which stone sample, sealer and maintenance approach are appropriate for the household’s use?
These are specification questions, not answers supplied by the villa’s published story. Their purpose is to prevent a visual reference from being mistaken for a complete construction drawing.

How to judge whether the approach suits your own home
Start with the room’s architecture, not with a product photograph. In a period house, map the existing lines and decide which ones the new work should echo. Then mark the actual seating positions and walking routes. If the fireplace is visually impressive but forces people to pass through the conversation area, it has not solved the room’s functional brief.
Next, look at the balance of solid and open surfaces. The villa combines a substantial corner sofa and flanking cabinetry with a relatively restrained mantle and surround. That contrast keeps the wall useful without making the centre feel crowded. A smaller room may need less cabinetry; a larger one may need stronger vertical framing. The principle is adjustable even when the product is not.
Finally, separate atmosphere from performance. A marble hearth, carefully proportioned surround and warm furnishings can make a room feel settled, but they do not prove a particular heating result. Confirm technical suitability, compliance and operating cost independently through current product documentation and a local specialist.
The lasting lesson from this 1910-villa renovation
The fireplace succeeds in the published design account because it is treated as part of the room’s architecture and social life. Its identity comes from the relationship between the DF960 appliance identified by Escea, the custom Arabescato hearth, the staggered surround, the timber floor, the corner sofa and the cabinetry. Remove any one element and the visual balance would change.
For anyone renovating an older home, the transferable idea is to make the fireplace answer several questions at once: Where should people gather? Which existing proportion should the new work respect? What material will ground the fire? Where will storage go? How can the room remain comfortable when it is not being formally presented?
Those questions produce a more durable result than choosing a fashionable surround in isolation. In this villa, the fireplace’s “timeless” character is the visible outcome of that coordinated decision-making.
