The Escea FS730 is a freestanding gas fireplace with a built-in room fan and listed Smart Heat App availability. Escea’s builders and architects specification sheet gives a 5–5.6 kW heat-output range, 22–25 MJ/hr gas consumption, a 45 kg appliance weight and a 3–4-star rating. Gas type, flue design, clearances, power and exact installation method depend on the market and configuration, so the current regional FS730 documentation and a qualified gas-fire installer are essential before ordering or building around one.

What the Escea FS730 is
The FS730 is a freestanding gas fireplace rather than a built-in cassette or open fireplace insert. “Freestanding” describes how the appliance is positioned in the room; it does not mean it can be installed anywhere without a designed flue, gas connection, electrical supply and specified clearances. The model is intended to be planned as a complete appliance-and-flue installation.

The manufacturer’s builders and architects sheet identifies the FS730 as available with Smart Heat App control. That is useful for adjusting the appliance without reaching for a conventional handset, but app availability does not remove the need to meet gas, ventilation, electrical, flue and clearance requirements. The same sheet lists more than one gas and flue arrangement, which is why a generic installation diagram is not a safe substitute for the model and market manual.

These are manufacturer-published specifications. They should not be presented as an independent efficiency comparison, laboratory test or guarantee of performance in a particular room. A heating professional can use the output range together with insulation, glazing, ceiling height and local climate to judge suitability.
Smart Heat control: what the listing confirms
The FS730 specification sheet lists Smart Heat App availability. In practical terms, that means the model is identified as compatible with Escea’s Smart Heat control system, subject to the correct model guide and installation conditions. It does not establish every feature available in every country, phone operating system or software release.

Do not assume that every SmartHeat feature shown in general help pages applies to the FS730. In particular, the published Alexa and Google Home instructions refer expressly to compatible Escea electric fireplaces. They are not evidence that voice control works with the gas FS730. Confirm voice-assistant compatibility in the current FS730 documentation before promising it in a specification or smart-home plan.
Gas type and regional planning
The builders and architects sheet lists natural gas, ULPG and propane for Australia. That list is not permission to convert an appliance in the field or to use whichever fuel is most convenient. Gas approval, injector configuration, regulator settings and local certification are market-specific.
- Identify the market first. Use the manual and compliance documents for the country and model code in the quotation.
- Confirm the available supply. Ask the installer to verify pressure, meter capacity, pipe route and isolation-valve location before cabinetry or flooring is finished.
- Match the appliance configuration. The installer should confirm that the supplied gas type and any conversion parts correspond to the approved FS730 variant.
- Record the final setup. Keep the commissioning record, model information and any gas-conversion documentation with the appliance.
Gas consumption of 22–25 MJ/hr is a rating for the appliance, not a promise of a particular monthly bill. Actual cost depends on the local tariff, operating hours, thermostat settings and whether the fire cycles at a lower rate.
Flue options and why the layout matters
The FS730 sheet names Simpson Duravent direct vent and flexi flue for masonry installations. Those words describe approved system families, not a universal parts list. Diameter, vertical and horizontal runs, terminal position, offsets, restrictor settings and required supports can change with the building and selected arrangement.

The sheet directs builders to the installation manual for clearances, flue lengths, restrictor settings and other flue information. Have the installer draw the proposed route before framing or cutting a roof. A route that looks acceptable from the room may fail at a wall penetration, roof terminal, combustible member or maximum-length limit.
- Choose the exact FS730 variant and fuel. Record the model code and market in the project documents.
- Survey the proposed location. Note external walls, masonry, roof structure, windows, doors, eaves and neighbouring openings.
- Select the approved flue arrangement. The installer should use the current FS730 manual to determine whether direct vent or a masonry flexi-flue arrangement is permitted for that route.
- Calculate the route. Check permitted lengths, bends, vertical sections, terminals and any restrictor setting rather than estimating from another fireplace.
- Coordinate trades. Reserve penetrations, framing protection, gas pipework and the electrical outlet before finishes are installed.
- Commission the appliance. A qualified person should test gas operation, flue performance, controls and safety devices and provide the required records.
Never substitute a visually similar flue or extend a run beyond the documented limit. Compatibility is configuration-specific, and the manufacturer’s approval for one FS730 layout does not automatically approve another.
Electrical requirement and Smart Heat readiness
The specification sheet calls for a 3-pin earthed 230/240 V outlet with an isolating switch within 1.0 m of the appliance’s rear-right corner. Treat that location as a coordination dimension, not an invitation to place a loose extension lead behind the fire. The electrician should verify the current regional requirement, access to the isolator and protection under local electrical rules.

Plan the outlet while the wall and floor are open. Confirm that the isolator remains reachable after the appliance is installed and that the cable is protected from heat and mechanical damage. If Smart Heat will use a home network, check signal strength at the final appliance position before closing walls; network troubleshooting is much easier before finishes are complete.

Hearth, clearances and furniture placement
The AF/FS installation and service manual states that a hearth is not required. A hearth may still be used for decoration or to protect sensitive flooring, but it is not a substitute for the clearances and surface-temperature requirements in the current manual.
The same manual cautions against placing items or furnishings on the fireplace and says soft furnishings should not contact it. Keep curtains, throws, cushions, baskets, toys and decorative objects outside the specified zones. Do not use the top of the appliance as a shelf, even when an item appears stable while the fire is off.
Exact clearances are installation-specific. Before selecting furniture or finalising a room layout, obtain the regional FS730 clearance diagram and have the installer mark the exclusion zones on the plan. Account for doors, traffic paths and children or pets, not just the nearest wall.

The output range indicates the heat the appliance is designed to deliver under its published rating conditions. It does not translate directly into a guaranteed floor area because heat loss varies dramatically between homes. A well-insulated open-plan room with modest glazing can behave differently from a draughty room with high ceilings and several external walls.

- Ask for a heat-loss assessment if the FS730 will be the primary heat source.
- Consider the room fan. The listed fan helps move warm air through the room, but room shape and open doorways still determine how evenly heat spreads.
- Check minimum and maximum operation. A professional can explain whether the 5 kW-plus output may cause cycling or overheating in a small, highly insulated room.
- Separate ambience from heating duty. If the fire is mainly decorative, controls and installation constraints may matter more than maximum output; if it is primary heating, fuel supply and heat-loss calculations deserve priority.
How to compare the FS730 with another fireplace
A fair comparison uses the same evidence for both appliances. The following checklist prevents a lower headline price or a larger-looking flame from hiding installation differences.

No competing model, warranty duration or independent performance statistic is established here. Obtain those details from each manufacturer’s current regional documents rather than inferring them from a product name or an older brochure.
Documentation, price and availability
Escea’s technical document index lists FS730 installation, user-guide, warranty, remote-pairing and Gasmark certificate downloads. Use the latest documents that match the market and model code. A document index confirms that material exists; it does not by itself establish the warranty duration or the terms that apply to your installation.

Ask an authorised local supplier or qualified installer for a written quotation covering the appliance, approved flue components, gas work, electrical work, commissioning and any building alterations.
Common planning mistakes and fixes
- Using dimensions from a different model: request the current FS730 drawing and leave service access, not just the cabinet opening.
- Assuming one flue route fits every house: have the installer calculate the actual run and terminal location from the manual.
- Leaving power until the end: place the earthed outlet and isolator during first-fix work, then verify access after installation.
- Promising voice control: describe Smart Heat App availability, but verify any Alexa or Google Home function for the gas FS730 specifically.
- Treating a hearth as a safety substitute: follow the clearance diagram even when a decorative hearth is installed.
- Placing furnishings against the fire: keep soft furnishings and objects off the appliance and outside the documented exclusion zones.
