Yes—but only in a specific, documented sense. Moodie Outdoor Products used Evertuff Everdeck commercial decking boards as an alternative to standard spotted gum decking on a pedestrian bridge reported by Architecture & Design on 4 May 2009. That project does not prove Evertuff is a universal replacement for hardwood, structural timber, or every decking application. Current suitability depends on the exact Evertuff profile, design span, loads, subframe, fasteners and exposure.
What the Moodie Outdoor Products project actually shows
The source report describes a completed pedestrian bridge built with Evertuff Everdeck commercial decking boards. Its comparison is narrow: the recycled boards were presented as an alternative to standard spotted gum timber decking. The article does not provide a like-for-like engineering test against spotted gum, a lifecycle assessment, or evidence that Evertuff can replace hardwood in every structural or outdoor use.

One bridge used the product in place of the timber decking normally considered for that project. A new boardwalk, deck or marine walkway still needs its own design checks.
The historical bridge specification
The 2009 report records co-mingled recycled-plastic slats measuring 32 × 135 × 2500 mm. They were supplied in grey and fixed with stainless-steel fasteners to a reinforced subframe. The bridge is useful as a precedent because it demonstrates that the material was used on a public pedestrian route, not merely as a residential decorative board. It is not, by itself, a load table, certification, warranty or durability comparison.
What Evertuff is today
Integrated Recycling currently describes Evertuff Commercial Decking as a recycled wood-plastic composite for building, landscaping, public open space and marine situations. The supplier says the decking is available in ripple-groove and deep-groove profiles, can be manufactured to a required manageable length, and can be worked with the same general tools used for wood.

A composite board can be cut and drilled much like timber while still requiring different allowance for movement, support spacing, screw selection and water exposure. Obtain the current installation document for the exact profile before preparing drawings or ordering material.
Current profile and span information
For Evertuff Commercial Ripple Groove Decking, Integrated Recycling states a recommended maximum span of 700 mm. The qualification matters: the figure applies to the named ripple-groove commercial profile. It should not be transferred automatically to deep-groove boards, another orientation, a different board section, a bridge with unusual impact loads, or a heavily trafficked public structure.
Span is only one design variable. The supplier and project engineer also need to establish the design load, joist or bearer size, deflection limit, edge distances, board orientation, support condition, temperature movement and drainage. If a project has a public-access, marine or bridge function, have the responsible engineer confirm the applicable code and safe-load information.

Can Evertuff replace hardwood decking?
It can replace a hardwood decking surface in a project designed for the product, as the Moodie bridge demonstrates. The evidence does not support saying that it replaces hardwood generally. “Hardwood” covers many species, board profiles, structural grades and exposure conditions. Spotted gum decking on one pedestrian bridge is a much narrower comparison than all hardwood construction.

A proper comparison should use the same span, imposed load, board orientation, support arrangement, drainage, coastal exposure, maintenance period and required appearance. If one option is assessed as a non-structural walking surface and the other as a structural member, the result is not meaningful.
Questions to answer before substituting it
- Is the board being used as a walking surface, a handrail component, a structural member or a decorative element?
- Which current Evertuff profile and section are available for the project?
- What design load, crowd load, impact load and deflection limit apply?
- What support spacing is permitted for that exact profile?
- Will the subframe and screws tolerate freshwater, salt spray, chemicals or concealed moisture?
- How will the surface drain and be cleaned?
- What warranty and service-life evidence applies to Evertuff itself, rather than to another product family?
- Are the required lengths, colours and quantities available in the project’s delivery area?
Installation and fastening: a project-ready path
The 2009 bridge used double stainless-steel fastening into a reinforced subframe. Current Integrated Recycling material describes an alliance involving Simpson Strong-Tie hardware, including Quik Drive auto-feed systems and Composi-Lok screws, for Evertuff commercial decking. That description identifies a possible fastening route; it does not replace the current installation instructions or an engineer’s specification.
- Identify the exact board. Record the profile name, section, finish, intended length and orientation. Do not order from the 2009 dimensions unless the supplier confirms they are still offered.
- Obtain the current span and load information. Verify whether the 700 mm recommendation applies to your profile, load case and support direction. Ask for any deflection, edge-distance and cantilever limits.
- Design the subframe. Confirm bearer material, corrosion protection, level tolerances, drainage gaps and restraint against movement. A reinforced subframe was part of the historical bridge installation; a light residential frame may not be equivalent.
- Specify compatible screws. Check screw length, head geometry, thread form, corrosion grade and spacing against the board and subframe. In marine or coastal exposure, obtain written corrosion-compatibility guidance.
- Make a trial fixing. Test drilling, countersinking, edge distances and board movement on offcuts. Inspect the finished surface for cracking, mushrooming, slippage or excessive restraint.
- Install to the approved pattern. Follow the supplier’s current pilot-hole, screw-spacing, end-joint and expansion instructions. Do not infer a complete pattern from the phrase “double-screwed” in the 2009 report.
- Document the completed work. Keep the product batch, profile, fastener type, support spacing, installer details and maintenance instructions with the project file.
Integrated Recycling says Quik Drive use can “reduce installation times by up to 70%.” That is a supplier claim about its auto-feed system, not an independently verified result or a guaranteed saving on your bridge. Actual productivity depends on access, cutting, predrilling, crew experience, board length and inspection requirements.
Maintenance and the role of painting
Integrated Recycling says Evertuff commercial decking needs regular cleaning rather than painting or oiling. That distinction matters when budgeting a public walkway: the maintenance plan should focus on removing dirt, leaf litter, algae and contaminants, not on scheduling a timber-coating cycle.

“No painting or oiling” does not mean maintenance-free. Cleaning frequency depends on shade, moisture, foot traffic, nearby vegetation, pollution and marine exposure. Establish a written inspection routine that checks slip hazards, loose screws, damaged edges, movement at joints, standing water and the condition of the supporting frame.
For a painter or facilities team, the practical implication is that Evertuff is not a conventional hardwood substrate for which a stain or deck oil should be selected by habit. Confirm any proposed coating with the supplier first; an unapproved coating may change slip, adhesion, appearance or warranty conditions.

Evertuff is described as recycled wood-plastic composite, and the 2009 report identifies co-mingled recycled plastic slats. The reviewed material does not provide a named Evertuff-specific recycled-content percentage, an independent lifecycle assessment, or a verified comparison with spotted gum.
Integrated Recycling’s boardwalk page gives figures of up to 70% recycled content and a 40-plus-year lifespan for its Envire boardwalk products. Those figures are explicitly associated with Envire, not established for the Evertuff boards used on the Moodie bridge. They must not be transferred between product families.

Without those documents, it is fair to describe Evertuff as a recycled composite, but not to quantify a greenhouse-gas, durability or hardwood-replacement advantage.

Integrated Recycling states that it acquired Cosset Industries Australia on 1 September 2016. Its 2025 product catalogue identifies Evertuff as a registered trademark of Pro-Pac Group Pty Ltd trading as Integrated Recycling and describes Evertuff as a distributed recycled plastic material.
The historical Cosset catalogue also listed related items such as profiles, bollards, tree stakes and outdoor seating. That catalogue is historical evidence of the former product range, not confirmation of current stock. Verify present availability, colour options, manufacturing lengths, delivery area and minimum order quantities directly with the supplier or distributor.
A practical specification checklist
