Igor Siwanowicz won Evident Scientific’s fifth annual Image of the Year Award in 2024 with Beauty of Cosmic Proportions, a confocal-microscope view of pollen developing inside a Mexican aster flower. Announced on 11 November 2024, the international competition drew entries from 29 countries and added a video category for the first time. Its winning images show how microscopy can turn hidden biological, material and chemical structures into both scientific evidence and compelling visual art.

What is the microscopic photo competition called?

The competition is Evident Scientific’s Image of the Year Award. It recognizes microscope images for two qualities at once: scientific value and visual achievement. Judges considered artistic and visual appeal, scientific impact and the entrant’s proficiency with the microscope.

The 2024 contest accepted work from 29 countries. Alongside the overall award, it presented a Materials Science Image of the Year, regional awards for the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia-Pacific, and—new in 2024—a video category.

Who won the 2024 global award?

Igor Siwanowicz of the United States won the global award for Beauty of Cosmic Proportions. The picture is a cross-section of a Cosmic Orange Mexican aster flower. It reveals pollen grains maturing inside the flower’s anthers, a stage of plant reproduction normally hidden from unaided view.

Siwanowicz said the image presents “the true beauty of a common flower that most of us take for granted” by extending it beyond what the naked eye can see. He also described magnification as a change in scale and perception: natural forms can become unfamiliar while producing a new emotional response as the viewer continues to zoom in.

How was the winning microscopic photograph made?

This was not a simple photograph through a classroom microscope. It combined physical sectioning, fluorescent staining, confocal imaging and image stitching.

  1. Embedding: Siwanowicz embedded isolated florets in agarose to support the delicate tissue.
  2. Sectioning: He cut the embedded material with a vibratome, producing thin sections for optical imaging.
  3. Staining: Calcofluor White and Congo Red highlighted structural components in the plant tissue.
  4. Confocal acquisition: A confocal microscope recorded fluorescence using a 25X/0.8 numerical-aperture objective and 405, 488 and 561 nanometre laser lines.
  5. Image assembly: Four tiles were stitched into the final composition, allowing the field of view to include more of the flower section than a single capture could provide.

Confocal microscopy separates optical sections through fluorescence and can reject much of the out-of-focus light that would blur a conventional wide-field image. The preparation and laser settings are therefore part of the result: changing the stain, section thickness, objective or excitation wavelengths would change both the scientific information and the appearance.

Why do these images matter beyond their beauty?

They make hidden biology legible

A flower’s anthers, developing pollen and other cellular structures are real biological systems, but their dimensions place them outside ordinary vision. Microscopy supplies a scale at which development can be inspected and communicated.

They connect measurement with visual communication

Colour, contrast, focus and composition can guide attention without replacing the underlying observation. A strong competition image must remain more than decoration: it should show a structure, relationship or process that matters scientifically.

They reveal patterns across scale

Magnification can make one specimen seem to contain several visual worlds. Repeated cells, fibres and crystals may echo larger forms, which is why a scientific image can feel painterly while remaining grounded in a specimen and an optical method.

What microscope do you need to see or photograph specimens?

The appropriate instrument depends on the specimen, the question and the required resolution. The award’s named equipment prize was an Olympus/Evident SZX7 stereo microscope, with a choice of a DP23 digital camera or X Line objectives. A stereo microscope is useful for three-dimensional, relatively large specimens and for manipulation under low-to-moderate magnification.

It is not, by itself, a replacement for the confocal fluorescence system used for the winning image. Reproducing that workflow requires suitable fluorescence illumination, compatible filters and detectors, a high-quality objective, fluorescent stains, sectioning equipment and careful sample preparation.

  • For prepared slides and general structure: a compound brightfield microscope is the usual starting point.
  • For three-dimensional objects and dissection: a stereo microscope provides depth perception and working room.
  • For fluorescently labelled structures: a fluorescence microscope with the correct excitation and emission configuration is required.
  • For optical sectioning in thicker fluorescent samples: confocal microscopy offers the specialized capability used in Siwanowicz’s image.
  • For moving chemical or biological events: a camera-equipped system and controlled timelapse acquisition are more important than magnification alone.

Camera quality, illumination, numerical aperture, sample preparation and image processing can matter as much as the microscope’s headline magnification. A higher magnification does not automatically reveal more detail if the optics, contrast or specimen preparation are limiting factors.

How does the award fit the history of photomicrography?

Scientific photomicrography has long occupied the space between investigation and visual art. Fluorescence, polarized light, dark-field illumination, confocal imaging and computational techniques such as deconvolution each produce different kinds of evidence and different visual languages. Competitions such as Image of the Year make that dual purpose explicit: the image must invite attention while showing why the specimen deserves it.

What the 2024 results establish—and what they do not

The 2024 results document the named winners, their subjects and, for the global winner, a specific confocal preparation and acquisition workflow. They do not establish that every award entry used confocal microscopy, that a stereo microscope can produce equivalent images, or that the 2024 equipment prize represents current product availability. Contest schedules, prizes and instrument offerings can change in later editions.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
