Short answer: Australian Evo-Crete was marketed as an ultra-lightweight fibre-reinforced concrete, with Evolve Composites claiming it could be up to three times lighter than standard concrete. Historical examples include equipment and cable-ladder support blocks and Handi Blocks for deck foundations. That weight advantage may simplify lifting and placement, but the available product material does not establish a like-for-like advantage in compressive strength, durability, fire performance, thermal performance or code compliance. Treat the weight figures as manufacturer claims, verify current technical documentation, and obtain project-specific engineering approval before using any block as a structural support.

This article concerns the Australian product associated with Evolve Composites. It is not the similarly named EvoCrete® soil and cement modifier sold by Shamrock GeoScience.

What “Evo-Crete” means in this comparison

The name is ambiguous. Historical Australian literature describes Evo-Crete as a lightweight, fibre-reinforced concrete used in prefabricated blocks and bases. A different product called EvoCrete® is marketed as an additive for soil solidification and concrete modification, including road-construction work. Its chemistry, purpose and performance data cannot be used to evaluate the lightweight blocks discussed here.

The exact-title Architecture & Design item is dated 22 January 2013 and contains sparse product-news information, including an Evolve Composites image credit. More detailed claims come from historical Evolve Composites product literature and a 13 February 2013 Outdoor Design Source trade article. Those records describe a product from that period; they do not confirm a current manufacturer, SKU, distributor or specification sheet.

How much lighter was Evo-Crete?

Evolve Composites’ brochure states: “Evo-Crete is an Ultra lightweight concrete – 3 times lighter than standard concrete.” The brochure does not provide a matched mix design, density test, specimen size, moisture condition or test method, so the statement should be read as a company comparison rather than a universally applicable engineering value.

Documented figure What it describes Qualification
Up to roughly three times lighter than standard concrete Evolve Composites’ general product claim Company statement; the accessible brochure text does not state the comparison basis or test method.
Less than 30 kg A large Evo-Crete block Evolve Composites says a similar-size standard block exceeds 100 kg; dimensions, mix details and test conditions are not given.
Approximately 8 kg Handi Block Reported by Outdoor Design Source in 2013; this is a trade-reported product weight, not an independent test result.
750 kg/m³ dry density A separate 2016 expanded-waste-glass and polypropylene-fibre concrete study This value belongs to that research mix, not to Evo-Crete, and cannot be substituted for an Evo-Crete specification.

“Up to” matters: it is a maximum marketing claim, not a promise that every block or batch is one-third the mass of conventional concrete. A fair comparison requires equal dimensions, comparable moisture state, equivalent reinforcement and a stated definition of “standard concrete.” Without those details, the figures are useful for understanding the intended handling proposition, not for calculating structural capacity.

Why lower mass can matter on a real project

A lighter prefabricated unit can change the practical work required to move it from delivery to its final position. The historical brochure presents Evo-Crete blocks and bases as products that can be handled and modified with basic hand or power tools. The reported sub-30-kg large block and approximately 8-kg Handi Block would be materially easier for a small crew to carry than a similarly sized unit exceeding 100 kg.

That is a logistics benefit, not proof of structural equivalence. A support still has to carry the design load, transfer that load to the ground or framing, remain stable against sliding and overturning, and tolerate the project’s exposure. A lighter block may also have less resistance to accidental movement simply because it has less self-weight; whether that matters depends on the complete assembly and its restraints.

Historical applications: what the product was made for

Equipment and cable-ladder supports

Evolve Composites’ product material describes prefabricated support blocks and bases for equipment and cable ladders. These are discrete supports rather than a poured slab or monolithic frame. The block’s dimensions, bearing area, connection details and permissible load must be checked for the particular equipment and support spacing.

Deck foundation supports

Outdoor Design Source described Handi Blocks as deck-foundation supports and reported an approximate weight of 8 kg per block in 2013. That article is historical. It does not establish a current product line, a present-day load rating, frost or ground-performance rating, or compliance with the rules in your location.

Cutting and modification

The historical brochure says the blocks can be modified with basic hand or power tools. Before cutting a unit, obtain the manufacturer’s current instructions, identify any embedded reinforcement or fibres, and confirm that altering the unit does not invalidate its tested capacity or warranty. A modified block should not be treated as equivalent to an unmodified, tested unit.

Evo-Crete and conventional concrete: a criterion-by-criterion comparison

The table separates what is documented from what remains unestablished. “Conventional concrete” is a broad category; its performance varies with cement content, aggregate, water-to-cement ratio, reinforcement, curing and exposure.

Criterion Evo-Crete evidence Conventional concrete comparison Decision implication
Mass and handling Manufacturer says up to three times lighter; brochure gives less than 30 kg for a large block versus more than 100 kg for a similar-size standard block; Handi Block reported at about 8 kg. No single mass applies to all conventional concrete; the comparison needs equal dimensions and moisture condition. Potentially easier manual handling, but verify the exact unit weight and lifting method.
Compressive strength No current, independently tested Evo-Crete value is established in the accessible material. Strength is mix- and age-dependent and must be specified for the concrete selected. Do not assign a design load from the weight claim.
Flexural or tensile behaviour Fibre reinforcement is part of the product description, but no verified Evo-Crete flexural or post-cracking values are provided. Behaviour depends on reinforcement, mix and testing regime. Request test results that match the intended load and failure mode.
Durability and permeability No product-specific durability dataset is established. Exposure resistance depends on the mix, curing and environment. Check water, chloride, freeze-thaw, abrasion and chemical exposure requirements where relevant.
Fire performance No Evo-Crete fire rating or test classification is established. Fire performance depends on thickness, moisture, aggregate and assembly details. Obtain a classification or assessment for any regulated fire application.
Thermal performance No product-specific thermal-conductivity value is established. Thermal behaviour varies with density, moisture and mix constituents. Do not infer insulation performance from the word “lightweight.”
Approvals and code compliance No current jurisdiction-specific approval is established. Requirements depend on the local building code and application. Have the designer or engineer confirm acceptability before installation.

Why a lightweight label does not tell you the strength

Density and strength are related through mix design, but they are not interchangeable. Aggregate type, pore structure, fibre geometry and volume, cementitious content, water ratio, curing and manufacturing quality all influence the result. Two lightweight fibre-reinforced concretes can have very different compressive, flexural and durability performance.

A 2016 Journal of Cleaner Production paper illustrates that point with a separate ultra-lightweight fibre-reinforced concrete made using expanded waste glass and polypropylene fibres. That study reported a dry density of 750 kg/m³ and examined mechanical properties and thermal conductivity. It is evidence that a particular engineered mix can reach a low density; it is not a test of Evo-Crete and supplies no missing Evo-Crete values.

Likewise, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a different material category. An ACI Committee 239 technical note published in 2024 describes UHPC, in broad terms, as having mechanical and durability properties beyond those attainable with conventional or high-performance concretes, including low permeability, high compressive strength and sustained post-cracking tensile resistance. FHWA resources commonly associate 150 MPa compressive strength with the UHPC threshold. Neither the ACI description nor the 150 MPa figure is an Evo-Crete specification. A product should not be called UHPC merely because it contains fibres or is lightweight.

What documentation to request before specifying a block

Because the historical marketing material is not a complete engineering datasheet, ask the current supplier or manufacturer for a dated technical package. The useful questions are:

A practical selection process

  1. Define the load path. List the equipment, deck, cable tray or other item being supported; its permanent and variable loads; the number and spacing of supports; and how forces reach the soil, slab or framing.
  2. Set the site conditions. Record soil or slab capacity, drainage, groundwater, freeze-thaw exposure, chemicals, vibration, wind, seismic demand and access for delivery and maintenance.
  3. Compare complete assemblies. Evaluate the block, bearing plate, fasteners, grout, framing and foundation together. A block that passes an isolated compression test may still fail through sliding, overturning, local bearing or connection failure.
  4. Obtain matching tests. Require test results using the dimensions, moisture state, loading direction and support condition that resemble the intended installation.
  5. Check local rules. Ask the building official, structural engineer or other authority having jurisdiction whether a proprietary prefabricated support needs an evaluation report, product approval or special inspection.
  6. Plan handling and inspection. Confirm that the claimed unit mass fits the crew’s lifting plan, and define checks for cracks, chips, dimensional tolerance and seating before the unit is loaded.
  7. Document the decision. Keep the technical sheet, calculations, installation instructions, batch information and approval records with the project file.

When the lighter option may be a sensible fit

Manual placement is the main constraint

If access prevents a crane or powered lifting device, a verified lightweight block can reduce handling effort. The benefit is strongest where the design load is modest and the support can be fully checked for stability and bearing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefabricated, repeatable supports are preferred

Blocks and bases can provide a consistent geometry without casting a form on site. Confirm tolerances, leveling methods and the interface with the supported equipment before choosing this approach.

The support is nonstructural or readily inspectable

For a noncritical support, the consequences of a local defect may be easier to manage, but the project still needs a competent designer to define what “nonstructural” means. Equipment that looks secondary can impose significant vibration, impact or maintenance loads.

When conventional concrete or another system may be more appropriate

Published structural values are mandatory

For a load-bearing frame, retaining element, vehicle area or regulated foundation, you need traceable strength, durability and code documentation. The historical Evo-Crete material available here does not provide that dataset.

The assembly relies on high self-weight

Where resistance to sliding, uplift or overturning depends on dead load, reducing mass can work against the design unless anchors, shear keys or another restraint system are engineered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exposure is severe

Marine salts, de-icing chemicals, repeated freezing and thawing, industrial chemicals, fire exposure or continuous wetting require product-specific evidence. Do not infer suitability from a general lightweight claim.

Availability and ownership need current verification

A 15 September 2014 Capital Southwest announcement said that RectorSeal acquired the Polyslab, Evo-Crete and related HVAC brands from Evolve Composites. That establishes a historical transfer, not present ownership, manufacturing or sales availability. Before specifying the product, verify who currently makes it, whether the named block is still produced, which country it is sold in and whether the technical literature is current.

The 2013 Handi Block report and the historical brochure are useful for identifying intended applications and approximate handling weights. They should not be treated as confirmation that an identical SKU is available today.

If the block will be painted or coated

The available product material does not establish a coating system, surface-pH limit, moisture limit, adhesion value or weathering warranty for Evo-Crete. Ask for substrate-preparation instructions and coating-compatibility testing from the current manufacturer. A paint specification should identify the required surface condition, primer, film build, cure time and exposure class rather than assuming that a concrete coating suitable for a conventional cast slab will perform identically on a proprietary fibre-reinforced unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom-line decision

Evo-Crete’s documented proposition is reduced weight: Evolve Composites claimed up to three times less mass than standard concrete, with historical examples of blocks below 30 kg and Handi Blocks around 8 kg. That can be valuable for manual handling and prefabricated supports. The available evidence does not prove that Evo-Crete matches conventional concrete in strength, durability, fire behaviour, thermal performance or regulatory acceptance. Choose it only after obtaining current, product-specific test data and having the complete support system reviewed for its actual loads and site conditions.
