The correct portrait wallpaper canvas for iPhone 16 Pro Max is 1320 × 2868 pixels. Apple lists the display resolution in the opposite order—2868 × 1320—because it specifies height before width. The two measurements describe the same 19.5:9 display.

Apple’s technical specifications identify the iPhone 16 Pro Max display as 2868 × 1320 pixels at 460 ppi. It is a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, although the standard-rectangle measurement is 6.86 inches because the visible display has rounded corners.

The portrait aspect ratio is approximately 19.5:9. A square image or a conventional 16:9 photo is not an exact fit and will need to be scaled or cropped.
Where to download exact-size wallpapers
The iDownloadBlog collection labels its iPhone 16 Pro Max wallpapers with Apple’s 2868 × 1320 specification and provides individual downloads with photographer credits. Select the original image download, not a thumbnail or screenshot of the preview.
Before using a third-party image, check the creator and licensing information. A file being free to download does not automatically mean that it can be redistributed, modified, or used commercially. The collection links to Unsplash photographers; review the current Unsplash terms for the applicable use.

Exact dimensions do not guarantee a perfect Lock Screen
A 1320 × 2868 file has the correct pixel canvas, but that alone does not guarantee that iOS will show every part of it unchanged. The Lock Screen adds a clock and optional widgets, while the Dynamic Island occupies the top-center area. Rounded corners also remove tiny portions of the rectangular canvas.

Keep faces, text, logos, and other important details away from:
- the top-center Dynamic Island area;
- the clock region;
- optional Lock Screen widgets; and
- the lower controls and flashlight/camera areas.
Apple’s dimensional drawing shows the phone’s physical camera and sensor layout, but it is not a complete wallpaper-safe-area template. Treat the exclusion areas as composition guidance rather than fixed universal pixel coordinates.
How to set a downloaded wallpaper
- Download the original JPEG or PNG file.
- Open it in Photos, Files, or an image editor and verify that it is 1320 pixels wide and 2868 pixels tall.
- Open Settings and tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper, then choose Photos.
- Select the downloaded image and reposition or pinch only if necessary.
- Check the clock, widgets, Dynamic Island area, and lower controls.
- Tap Add or the equivalent confirmation control, then choose a wallpaper pair or customize the Home Screen separately.
Apple can change menu labels between iOS releases. If the wording differs slightly, begin from Settings’ Wallpaper section. iOS may still offer a positioning adjustment even when the source file has exact dimensions.

- Crop the photo to a 1320:2868 portrait ratio.
- Position the subject with generous space around the clock, Dynamic Island, widgets, and bottom controls.
- Export the final image at exactly 1320 × 2868 pixels.
- Use JPEG for ordinary photographs when a smaller file is useful. Use PNG for graphics, text, gradients, or artwork where compression artifacts are especially distracting.
- Save the exported original locally before setting it as wallpaper.
Do not enlarge a small, blurry photograph merely to reach 1320 × 2868. That creates a technically exact file, but not a sharp wallpaper. Pixel dimensions matter more than embedded print-resolution metadata: the file does not need to contain a 460 ppi setting for on-screen use.

Lock Screen and Home Screen composition
The same image can work for both screens, but the requirements differ. Lock Screen artwork needs clear space for the clock and widgets. Home Screen artwork sits behind app icons and labels, so a busy or high-contrast image can make the interface harder to read.
For a Home Screen version, consider using a darker, simpler crop or a calmer area of the same photograph. Avoid placing small text or detailed faces beneath app icons.
Why a wallpaper may look cropped, blurred, or wrong
The image looks blurry
Confirm the saved file’s dimensions and inspect its source quality. A low-resolution preview, social-media copy, screenshot, or upscaled image can be soft even when it has been exported at 1320 × 2868.
The image is zoomed or the top is cut off
Reopen the original file in Photos and check its orientation. During wallpaper setup, use the positioning controls to reduce or reposition the image if iOS offers that adjustment. If the subject is close to an edge, recrop it with more surrounding space.

The clock covers the subject
Use a version with open space in the upper portion of the canvas. Exact dimensions cannot prevent Lock Screen controls from overlapping artwork.
The downloaded file is not 1320 × 2868
The page may have served a thumbnail, WebP preview, or compressed image rather than the original. Download from the image’s original-file button or creator page, then verify the dimensions in Photos, Files, or an image editor.
The image is rotated
Check the file’s orientation metadata and export a new portrait copy with width 1320 and height 2868. Do not rely only on the displayed numbers if an app is interpreting orientation metadata incorrectly.
The file is too large or will not save
Export a JPEG for photographic artwork or reduce unnecessary metadata. Keep a PNG for graphics, text, and gradients when JPEG artifacts are visible. A large “4K” or “8K” file is not automatically better on this display.

Exact resolution versus “4K” wallpaper
“4K wallpaper” is usually a marketing label, not the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s native display resolution. Conventional 4K UHD is 3840 × 2160 pixels; the iPhone’s panel is 2868 × 1320 pixels. An oversized source can be useful because it allows extra repositioning or reuse on other devices, but size alone does not prove that the image is sharper.
For a device-specific download, exact-size 1320 × 2868 files are the clearest choice. Oversized originals are worthwhile when you need additional cropping room or want to use the same artwork across multiple phones.
Nearby iPhones are not interchangeable by default
Do not assume that a wallpaper made for iPhone 16 Pro Max will be pixel-perfect on the iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or another 6.7-inch model. Their display resolutions and physical layouts can differ. Apple’s iPhone comparison page is the appropriate place to check another model’s specification.

Wallpaper quality checklist
- Portrait file: 1320 × 2868 px.
- Aspect ratio: approximately 19.5:9.
- Original file downloaded, not a screenshot or thumbnail.
- No obvious interpolation, pixelation, or heavy compression.
- Important content kept clear of the clock, Dynamic Island, widgets, and bottom controls.
- Creator and licensing information retained.
- Separate, calmer Home Screen crop used when app labels compete with the artwork.
You do not need to buy an app to set an exact-size wallpaper: Photos, Files, and the iPhone’s Wallpaper settings are sufficient. Editors such as Canva or Adobe Express are optional tools for cropping, resizing, or designing your own image.
