Yes—but “tracing a picture with an app” can mean two different things. A camera-based AR app such as Da Vinci Eye overlays a reference image on the live camera view, letting you see the photo and paper or canvas together. A drawing app such as ibisPaint or Adobe Fresco imports the photo onto a digital layer for tracing on a tablet or computer. Neither app transfers ink automatically or creates a finished drawing: you still provide the hand movement, alignment and artistic decisions.
What “trace a picture with an app” actually means
Tracing onto paper or canvas
An AR tracing app uses the device camera and display as a camera-lucida-style reference. The photograph is overlaid on the camera view so you can see it alongside a physical surface. This is not a hologram or a bright projector; the phone or tablet must remain positioned so the reference and surface stay registered.
Tracing inside a drawing app
Digital tracing is more straightforward: import a photograph, lower its opacity, create a transparent layer above it, and draw over the reference. You can then hide the photo, clean the lines, add color or animation, and export the result.

- Multiple Colors: you will receive 7 pieces of LCD writing tablet stylus in different colors, and 7 pieces of black elastic lanyards are also provided, sufficient quantity can meet your daily use and replacement, please note that the color is only the appearance of the design, when writing will not change the color of the text
- Reliable Material: the writing pen for tablet is made of quality ABS material, sturdy and solid, not easy to break, deform or fade, lightweight and serviceable, convenient for taking around, and easy to store and won't take up too much space
- Portable Size: the stylus pen with lanyard is measured about 4.7 x 0.4 inches, proper size suitable for most LCD tablet memory slots, and the length is comfortable to grip, which will bring you a pleasant using experience
- Anti Loss Design: the top of each board stylus with a perforated design, you can use it with the elastic lanyard, won't worry about losing the pen, providing you with a long service time
- Wide Applications: the doodle board stylus is suitable for home, kindergarten, class, park, summer camp, painting class use, which is a practical tool for yourself or your kids during learning, drawing, calculating, and writing
Automatic “tracing” is different
Edge detection, posterization and photo-to-line-art filters can produce guides, but they do not reproduce the decisions and accuracy of hand tracing. They are simplification tools, not substitutes for either an AR overlay or a drawing layer.
What you need for physical tracing
- A phone or tablet with a rear-facing camera and a compatible operating system.
- Paper, canvas, wood, a wall or another drawing surface.
- A rigid stand, overhead holder, desk clamp or other support that will not wobble.
- Good ambient light, without glare washing out the screen.
- A clear reference photograph with identifiable subject boundaries.
- Pencil or stylus, ruler, masking tape and—if needed—a separate work light.
Da Vinci Eye instructs users to suspend an iPhone or iPad above or in front of the canvas so both image and surface are visible. Its manual cautions that an unstable gooseneck support can make Classic mode unusable; a rigid mount matters more than a long feature list. The company’s 2026 AR-mode stand was listed at $39.99, while its MagSafe-compatible model was listed at $47.99 and marked sold out when observed. These are accessory listings, not requirements: any rigid mount that holds the device in the correct position may work. See the official manual, 2026 stand listing and MagSafe listing.
How to trace onto paper with Da Vinci Eye
Classic Mode: a fixed setup
- Open Da Vinci Eye, tap Draw and select your picture.
- Choose Classic Mode.
- Place the phone on a stable stand (the manual’s improvised example is a tall glass) and position the paper beneath the camera view.
- Tap Move to resize, rotate and reposition the reference until it matches the surface.
- Tap Move again to lock the position.
- Adjust Opacity until the reference and paper are both visible.
- Trace while watching the screen.
Classic mode is simple, but moving the phone or paper breaks the alignment. Tape the paper down and avoid touching the stand during the session.
AR Mode: anchor the reference
- Open Draw, select the image and choose AR Mode.
- Open Tools > AR > Anchors.
- Tap the + button to create an anchor.
- Tape or otherwise secure the anchor near the top of the paper, keeping it visible to the camera.
- Use Move to position and scale the image, then lock it.
- Set the desired Opacity and begin drawing.
The anchor lets the app re-register the reference if you move the phone or canvas, so you can resume without manually rebuilding the composition. Tracking can still fail if the anchor leaves the camera view, lighting is poor or the surface offers too little visual detail.

Device compatibility to check before installing
For the U.S. App Store listing, Da Vinci Eye requires iOS 17.6 or later and iPadOS 17.6 or later. The developer says AR mode needs an A10X or A11 processor or newer and recommends iPhone 8 or newer, iPad mini (5th generation or newer), iPad Air (2019 or newer) and iPad Pro models from 2018 onward. The Android app is distributed separately through Google Play and was updated May 7, 2026; check the individual Android listing for your device rather than applying iOS requirements to every phone. Camera, processor, motion-tracking and operating-system support differ among AR apps.
How to trace digitally in ibisPaint
- Create a new canvas at the dimensions you need.
- Import the photograph using the app’s image-import control.
- Keep the photograph on its own layer and lower that layer’s opacity.
- Add a new transparent layer above it.
- Draw the outline, construction lines or details on the new layer.
- Hide, delete or further reduce the reference layer when the drawing is established.
- Clean the line work, add color and export.
Menu labels can vary by operating system and edition, but the layer-based method is the same. ibisPaint supports iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac, and offers cloud syncing between devices. Its official comparison page displayed ibisPaint X as free, a paid mobile version at $15.99, and premium membership at $2.99 per month or $27.99 per year when observed; prices vary by store and region. See mobile editions and pricing and Mac and Windows information.
Where Adobe Fresco fits
Adobe Fresco is a general-purpose digital drawing and painting app, not a dedicated physical-surface projector. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Windows and combines raster and vector brushes, layers, image-based drawing, Paint Inside and vector trimming. Those tools make it useful for tracing, correcting lines, coloring and animation after a reference has been imported. Adobe describes Fresco itself as free while also presenting paid Creative Cloud bundles; a Creative Cloud subscription should not be assumed necessary for ordinary Fresco use. Its supported-device details are documented in Adobe’s Fresco introduction.
Which approach fits your goal?
| Goal | Best fit | Why | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trace onto paper or canvas | Da Vinci Eye or another dedicated AR app | Live camera overlay, image positioning, zoom and opacity controls | Needs a stable mount and compatible device; paid features may use subscriptions |
| Trace and edit digitally | ibisPaint | Imported images, layers, brushes and broad platform support | More manual setup; ads, limits and paid features depend on edition |
| Refine, color or animate digitally | Adobe Fresco | Raster/vector brushes, layers, Paint Inside and vector trimming | Not designed to overlay a reference on physical paper |
| Practice proportions and values | Da Vinci Eye’s guided tools | Image breakdown, color-value layers, tutorials and shading lessons | Supports practice but does not replace fundamentals |
| Avoid recurring fees | ibisPaint’s paid edition or an available one-time-purchase app | May suit occasional users who prefer a single purchase | Availability and included features vary by country and store |
| Large murals or walls | AR workflow with a rigid mount, or a conventional projector | Better alignment control than a handheld phone | Phone screen size and camera perspective limit visibility and scale |
Da Vinci Eye also advertises image import, zoom, filters, time-lapse recording, color-value breakdowns and step-by-step lessons on its site and about page. The U.S. App Store listing showed several offers, including Pro Access Yearly at $29.99, Monthly Unlimited Access at $7.99, Annual Unlimited Access at $24.99, and other monthly, annual and Pro tiers. Because multiple products or promotional and legacy offers appear together, confirm the exact in-app offer before subscribing: no single price is universal.

When a traditional method is better
- Grid: inexpensive, scalable and useful for learning proportion without an overlay.
- Light box: reliable for transferring line work through translucent paper, with no camera tracking or battery concerns.
- Opaque projector: better visibility and scale for murals, though it needs more space and equipment.
- Printed transfer: practical for long sessions when screen glare, heat or alignment drift would interrupt work.
Troubleshooting an unreliable overlay
The image drifts
Stop drawing. Check whether the phone, paper or stand moved, whether the app is in Classic rather than AR mode, and whether the anchor is visible. Tape down the paper, restore the original camera position, make the anchor visible again, reposition and relock the image. If AR tracking remains unstable, use Classic mode with a rigid stationary setup.
The image looks distorted
Keep the camera as perpendicular to the surface as possible. Oblique angles, curved surfaces, lens perspective and stretched aspect ratios can all change proportions. Compare the photograph’s aspect ratio with the paper before resizing.
The reference is too bright or faint
Adjust opacity and screen brightness while keeping enough ambient light on the paper. Excessive display brightness can make the surface disappear through glare.
The phone blocks your hand
Move the device above the work with an overhead mount instead of placing it directly between your face and the paper. Large surfaces may need to be completed in sections.

The device overheats or runs out of power
Camera use, AR tracking, high brightness and time-lapse recording consume power. Start charged, reduce unnecessary brightness and do not cover ventilation areas.
Fine details are difficult to see
Use a higher-resolution source, crop irrelevant areas, zoom in and work in stages. Da Vinci Eye specifically advertises zooming for micro-details.
The image will not import
- Check photo-library permissions.
- Confirm the file is stored locally rather than only in cloud storage.
- Try a supported image format and a smaller file.
- Verify the app and operating-system version.
- Use the app’s own import command instead of relying on sharing from another application.
Is tracing cheating?
Tracing can be a legitimate underdrawing method for studying proportion, construction and observation. It does not, by itself, demonstrate independent control of anatomy, perspective, values or line quality. To develop the work, redraw and simplify the reference, alter the composition or lighting, combine several references, and make your own decisions about edges and detail.
A tracing app also grants no permission to reproduce a photograph. Prefer your own images, public-domain material, properly licensed references or work for which you have permission. Private practice and commercial reproduction carry different risks, and copyright rules vary by jurisdiction. If the source is copyrighted or permission is unclear, crediting it may not be enough for public or commercial use.
Privacy and account considerations
Da Vinci Eye’s U.S. App Store privacy label says the app may collect contact information linked to the user and may collect identifiers, usage data and diagnostics not linked to the user. Privacy practices can change by feature, platform and age, so review the current store disclosure before installing. Other apps may have different account, cloud-sync and data policies.
Bottom line: choose by the surface you will draw on
Choose Da Vinci Eye when the priority is seeing a photograph aligned with physical paper, canvas or a wall; budget for a rigid mount and verify your device and current in-app offer. Choose ibisPaint or Fresco when the finished work will remain digital and you want editable layers, cleanup and color. Choose a grid, light box or conventional projector when long-session reliability, large scale or freedom from battery and tracking problems matters more than portability.
