The right Expol insulation depends first on what your house is made of. For an existing home with a suspended timber floor, Expol identifies R1.4 and R1.8 panels as retrofit products. Framed walls use a different EPS-panel range, with ThermaSlab positioned as an economical option and graphite-infused Platinum Board offering a higher R-value for a given thickness. Concrete slabs are a design-stage decision involving under-slab and slab-edge insulation, structural loading and moisture detailing.

Those product descriptions do not guarantee a particular energy-bill reduction or indoor temperature in every New Zealand house. Comfort depends on the whole building envelope, air leakage, heating, ventilation, solar exposure, moisture and workmanship. Use Expol’s information to identify a suitable product pathway, then confirm the complete assembly and current New Zealand requirements with an appropriately qualified designer or building professional.

Choose the building element before choosing a panel

Insulation products are not interchangeable simply because they all have an R-value. A panel installed beneath a suspended timber floor is solving a different problem from insulation inside a framed wall or beneath a concrete slab. Start by identifying the construction, whether the work is a retrofit or a new build, and the space available for insulation.

Building element Typical project context Expol pathway described by the manufacturer Questions to resolve before specifying
Suspended timber floor Existing house retrofit or a new timber-floor build R1.4 and R1.8 are identified as retrofit products; R2.5 and R3.1 as new-home products Access below the floor, joist layout, dampness, clearance, product thickness and the complete floor assembly
Timber- or steel-framed wall New wall construction or a wall opened during renovation ThermaSlab and Platinum Board EPS panels for framed buildings Cavity depth, framing material, thermal bridging, wiring, lining system and required assembly R-value
Concrete slab and foundation Usually designed before the slab is poured Under-slab and slab-edge insulation, including continuous insulation systems Structural loads, edge details, moisture, perimeter continuity and the project’s consented design

Keeping these pathways separate prevents a common mistake: selecting a product by its headline R-value while ignoring whether it fits the building element, carries the required loads or can be installed without damaging the envelope.

Timber-floor insulation: the retrofit route

What Expol’s product labels mean

Expol describes its R1.4 and R1.8 underfloor panels as retrofit options and R2.5 and R3.1 as options for new homes. These are product R-values, not predictions of how much warmer a room will feel or how much a household will save. The manufacturer says the underfloor range can be installed by DIY users or professionals, but the suitability of a particular panel still depends on the existing floor and the installation conditions.

Check that the floor is actually suitable

A suspended timber floor normally has a crawl space between the underside of the boards and the ground. Before ordering panels, inspect that space in daylight or have a professional inspect it. Look for:

  • Joists and floorboards that are sound rather than rotten or structurally compromised.
  • Standing water, persistent dampness, fungal growth or evidence that ground moisture is entering the subfloor.
  • Enough working room to place panels continuously without crushing them or leaving large gaps.
  • Services, pipes, ducts and electrical cables that may conflict with the planned insulation.
  • External access, ventilation and a safe way to move around the subfloor.

Insulation will not cure a drainage or leak problem. Resolve the moisture source first; otherwise the new material and the timber structure may remain exposed to damaging conditions.

A practical retrofit sequence

  1. Map the floor. Record the floor area, joist spacing, obstructions and locations where the underfloor space is inaccessible. Measure several bays rather than assuming the entire floor is identical.
  2. Confirm the target. Use Expol’s retrofit designation as a starting point, then check the panel dimensions, thickness and stated R-value against the floor assembly and the space available.
  3. Inspect services. Identify cables, pipes and ventilation paths before placing a panel. Do not move or alter electrical wiring unless the work is carried out by a suitably qualified electrician.
  4. Prepare the work area. Remove loose debris, correct obvious access or drainage issues and use appropriate crawl-space lighting, protective clothing and fall or confined-space precautions.
  5. Install to the current product instructions. Keep panels properly supported and fitted as the instructions require. Avoid forcing a panel into a space where it will bow, detach or obstruct a service.
  6. Check continuity. Inspect edges, corners and service penetrations for unintended gaps. A small number of difficult areas may need a different approved detail rather than improvised offcuts.
  7. Document the work. Photograph the completed installation and retain the product information, quantities and date for future maintenance or building records.

The R1.4, R1.8, R2.5 and R3.1 figures describe the products, not the final floor. Joists, floorboards, fixings, air movement and thermal bridges all affect the construction’s performance.

Framed walls: fit the insulation to the cavity and the wiring

ThermaSlab and Platinum Board serve different priorities

Expol describes its framed-wall solutions as EPS panels for timber and steel-framed buildings. It positions ThermaSlab as an economical choice and graphite-infused Platinum Board as a product that can achieve a higher R-value relative to its thickness. “Higher R-value relative to thickness” matters where a wall cavity is shallow, but it does not make Platinum Board automatically suitable for every wall. The complete wall build-up, lining, framing, fixings and weather-management details still have to work together.

When wall insulation is being retrofitted

Adding insulation to a finished wall can involve removing internal lining, external cladding or both. That exposes questions that are not answered by a panel’s R-value alone: whether the cavity is the stated size, whether framing has settled or suffered moisture damage, and how the new layer will meet windows, doors, corners and floors. Have the wall assembly assessed before closing it up. If the wall is opened for another renovation, use that opportunity to record the existing layers and resolve air and moisture-control details rather than simply filling every available void.

Electrical clearance is a non-negotiable check

Expol’s wall instruction states: “Ensure polystyrene is clear of wiring or place a barrier between wiring and insulation.” Treat that as an installation control, not a suggestion to compress panels around cables. Locate wiring before fitting the insulation, maintain the required separation or barrier detail, and obtain electrical advice where the existing installation is uncertain. Do not cut, reroute or enclose wiring as a DIY workaround.

Wall-installation checklist

  • Identify whether the frame is timber or steel and verify the actual cavity depth.
  • Check the selected panel’s dimensions, product R-value and approved use for that assembly.
  • Plan junctions at studs, lintels, corners, window reveals and floor lines so insulation is continuous where the design requires it.
  • Keep insulation clear of wiring, or install the specified barrier between wiring and insulation.
  • Coordinate the insulation with the wall’s moisture-management and lining details; do not block drainage or ventilation paths.
  • Have the final assembly reviewed against the consented design and current requirements before the wall is closed.

Concrete slabs: an early design decision

Slab insulation is primarily selected before construction, not as a simple after-the-fact upgrade. Expol’s slab information covers insulation beneath the slab and at the slab edge, with products for different structural and performance requirements. It also discusses continuous insulation systems intended to reduce breaks in the thermal envelope.

Under-slab insulation

Insulation beneath a slab must coexist with the subgrade, damp-proofing, reinforcement, services and the loads imposed by the building. The designer needs to confirm that the selected product and thickness are suitable for the actual loading and site conditions. Substituting a floor panel intended for another application is not an acceptable shortcut.

Slab-edge insulation

The exposed perimeter is a common route for heat flow. An edge detail has to meet the structural, moisture and durability requirements of the foundation while connecting to wall and floor insulation. A drawing that shows insulation in the middle of the slab but omits the perimeter may leave a significant thermal bridge.

Why this is difficult to retrofit

Once a concrete slab has been poured, access to the underside is gone. Some perimeter work may be possible during a renovation, but it cannot recreate every under-slab detail. If a new extension or replacement slab is planned, settle the insulation, edge continuity, waterproofing and load requirements during design and consent documentation.

R-value: product number versus whole construction

Expol’s March 2024 R-value explainer makes an important distinction. A product R-value describes the insulation performance of one material. A construction R-value considers the cumulative thermal performance of the layers making up the floor, wall or slab. The second figure is the one that relates to the finished building element.

That distinction explains why two walls containing panels with the same product R-value can perform differently. Timber or steel framing interrupts the insulation layer; joints and penetrations create additional paths for heat flow; and gaps reduce the benefit of the nominal material value. Thickness, density, orientation, workmanship and the continuity of adjacent elements also matter.

Use the 2024 explainer for the terminology, but do not treat it as a current compliance table. New Zealand requirements can change, and compliance depends on the applicable building-code provisions, climate zone, building use and calculation or modelling method. Confirm the current requirement with the official New Zealand building-control information and the professional responsible for the design.

How to compare Expol options without mixing unlike products

Decision axis Why it matters What to record
Element Floor, wall and slab products have different installation and performance constraints. Suspended timber floor, framed wall or concrete slab
Project stage Retrofit access is different from a new build’s open structure. Existing, partially opened or new construction
Thermal target A product value is not the same as the final assembly value. Required product and construction R-values
Available space Thickness and cavity depth can rule out an otherwise suitable option. Measured depth, clearances and junction dimensions
Physical conditions Moisture, loading and services affect safety and durability. Dampness, ground conditions, structural loads, wiring and pipes
Compliance Current rules apply to the complete building element, not a marketing label. Current New Zealand requirement and approval pathway

Do not rank R1.4, R1.8, R2.5, R3.1, ThermaSlab and Platinum Board in one universal league table. They belong to different applications and may not be alternatives for the same construction.

What comfort and energy results can you reasonably expect?

Better insulation can reduce heat transfer through the treated element, but the result in a particular home depends on more than the panel. Floor area, room height, glazing, draughts, heating controls, occupancy, weather and the condition of the existing structure all influence indoor temperature and energy use. A house with severe air leakage may see less benefit from an insulation upgrade than its product specification suggests.

Expol’s homepage says the company has manufactured insulation for “over 45 years” and states that its EPS solutions “improve thermal efficiency, reduce energy costs, and support sustainable building practices.” Those are company statements, not independent measurements of savings in your house. No general percentage saving should be assumed without a site-specific assessment and a defined measurement method.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by R-value alone: Start with the building element, cavity or clearance, moisture conditions and assembly design.
  • Using a new-build label for a retrofit: Expol specifically identifies R1.4 and R1.8 as retrofit underfloor options and R2.5 and R3.1 as new-home options; verify the intended use rather than assuming the largest number is best.
  • Covering electrical wiring: Follow the wall instruction to keep polystyrene clear of wiring or provide the required barrier, with electrical work handled by a qualified person.
  • Insulating over dampness: Find and correct leaks, drainage or ground-moisture problems before installation.
  • Leaving thermal bridges at edges: Plan corners, slab perimeters, joist ends, window reveals and service penetrations as part of the complete detail.
  • Assuming a 2024 explanation is current code: Use it to understand product versus construction R-value, then check today’s official New Zealand requirements.
  • Closing a wall or slab detail without records: Photograph concealed work and retain product documentation for future repairs, alterations and compliance questions.

A sensible project sequence for a New Zealand homeowner

  1. Identify construction. Confirm whether the target is a suspended timber floor, framed wall or concrete slab.
  2. Define the project stage. Decide whether this is a retrofit, a renovation with the element exposed or a new build.
  3. Inspect first. Check moisture, damage, access, services and structural conditions.
  4. Set the assembly target. Establish the required construction R-value and available thickness with the designer or building professional.
  5. Select within the correct product family. Use Expol’s retrofit/new-build and wall/slab distinctions as the starting filter.
  6. Resolve junctions and services. Detail edges, penetrations, wiring barriers, drainage and continuity before materials arrive.
  7. Verify current approval requirements. Confirm the applicable New Zealand rules and documentation before work starts.
  8. Install and inspect. Follow the current product instructions, keep the work area safe and check for gaps or unintended obstructions.
  9. Keep evidence. Store invoices, product data, photographs and any professional sign-off with the house records.

Expol can therefore be part of a well-designed comfort upgrade, but the correct choice is made by matching the product to the floor, wall or slab construction and then validating the complete assembly. The panel’s R-value is one input; moisture control, continuity, services, structure and current New Zealand compliance determine whether the finished project performs as intended.
