EzyJamb Trimless Steel Door Frames: How to Achieve a Clean Contemporary Finish

EzyJamb removes visible architraves by integrating a steel jamb with the drywall. Compare EZC Classic Adjust and SRC Single Rebate, set wall and door specifications early, and follow a finishing workflow that keeps the square-set edge crisp.

EzyJamb is a steel door-jamb system that removes the usual visible architrave. Its jamb wraps into the plasterboard or drywall so the finished opening can read as a sharp, square-set line in the wall. The visual payoff is substantial, but the frame is part of the wall build-up rather than a trim added at the end. Handing, wall thickness, rough-opening size, door and hinge selection, and the plasterboard finish therefore have to be settled before framing begins.

This guide explains the two principal EzyJamb configurations, the decisions to make before ordering, the SRC installation sequence documented by Studco, and a painting-and-finishing workflow that protects the trimless look.

What a trimless EzyJamb opening changes

A conventional doorway normally finishes with architraves or casing that cover the joint between the jamb and wall. EzyJamb takes a different approach: the steel jamb is installed as part of the wall lining, and the plasterboard is brought to it so the frame and wall appear nearly continuous. Studco describes the result as a concealed frame with “square set interiors” that “wraps the drywall during framing and blends seamlessly with the wall.”

In a painted room, that geometry creates a narrow, deliberate reveal instead of a broad timber or metal trim. Light travels across a single plane, corners look more architectural, and a door can sit quietly in a minimalist scheme. The effect depends on workmanship. An out-of-square opening, a proud screw head, a lumpy compound edge, or a heavy paint build-up will be more visible when there is no architrave to hide it.

EzyJamb is part of Studco’s EZ Concept architectural finishing range. The system is not a universal decorative cover: it is a structural finishing component that must be coordinated with studs, drywall thickness, the selected door and the final coating system.

Choose the correct EzyJamb configuration

The two configurations most often discussed in the supplied product information solve different wall-thickness problems. Do not assume that one can substitute for the other.

Configuration Construction and intended use Decision to make before ordering
EZC Classic Adjust Split, two-piece adjustable jamb intended to accommodate varying wall thicknesses. Confirm the adjustment range, overall frame dimensions, door size and the regional product schedule.
SRC Single Rebate One-piece, single-rebate jamb made for a specified wall thickness; it provides a flush face on the hinge side. State the finished wall thickness and identify which face must finish flush before the frame is fabricated.

The adjustable EZC is useful where the final lining build-up can vary, but “adjustable” does not mean every dimension is unlimited. The SRC is made to a wall thickness, so a change in board, adhesive, backing or framing depth can make the ordered jamb wrong. Ask the supplier for the current adjustment range or fabrication limits for your market rather than relying on a code or image from another country.

Set the specification before the wall is closed

Most trimless-door failures are specification failures that become visible during finishing. Complete this information in writing before studs are fixed.

Confirm the region and current technical data

Descriptions differ by market. The Australian catalog identifies BlueScope steel and lists standard height choices, while Studco’s US overview describes galvanized steel. Those statements are not interchangeable product guarantees. Obtain the current technical sheet for the country and edition being supplied, including coating, corrosion information, permitted wall build-ups and any fire, acoustic or accessibility requirements that apply to the project.

Choose handing, height and frame dimensions

The catalog includes left- and right-hand entries and lists 2040 mm and 2340 mm standard heights. Availability of those sizes, and the meaning of each catalog code, must be confirmed against the current regional schedule. Record the door leaf height and width, the opening direction, hinge side, rebate arrangement and finished floor level. A frame that is correct on a drawing but ordered for the opposite hand will not be rescued by plastering.

Define the finished wall thickness

Measure the complete lining, not just the stud. Include board thickness on both faces, any resilient channels or furring, tile or other finish where relevant, and the compound build-up at the jamb. For an SRC, this finished dimension is the fabrication basis. For an EZC, verify that the adjustment range still covers the measured assembly after all layers are selected.

Coordinate the door and hinges

Check the actual door slab, weight, thickness, hinge size, hinge positions and latch preparation. Studco notes that EzyJamb EZC can be paired with RocYork hinge options, and a Studco project page shows EzyJamb with concealed RocYork hinges. Treat that as related-hardware information, not automatic compatibility: verify the exact hinge and jamb combination, screw pattern and load requirements for your door.

How the frame integrates with drywall

The jamb is installed while the wall is being framed and lined. Drywall terminates at the jamb rather than being covered later by casing. That sequence explains both the clean appearance and the need for early decisions.

  1. Fix the opening in the structural layout. Set the stud opening to the manufacturer’s required rough dimensions, with the correct hinge-side reinforcement and head height. Do not size the opening from a generic door chart when the selected EzyJamb schedule gives a specific requirement.
  2. Check the opening before installing the jamb. It must be square, level and correctly sized. Measure diagonals, plumb both jamb sides and verify the head is level. Correct framing now; compound cannot compensate for a twisted opening.
  3. Install the jamb in the prescribed order. The SRC instructions place the hinge side first, tight to the stud opening and level. Fasten through the drywall into the stud jamb at 8-inch centers as specified in that booklet. Those dimensions and steps are SRC-specific; follow the current instructions for other models.
  4. Fit the door before mudding. Hang or temporarily install the door to check the reveal, swing, latch engagement and hinge clearances. The SRC instructions call for installing the door before mudding, removing it for finishing, and reinstalling it afterward.
  5. Apply compound and form the square-set edge. Use the approved drywall compound and finishing method for the jamb coating. Keep the edge straight and free of ridges; the absence of architrave means the transition remains exposed.
  6. Reinstall and test the finished door. After the compound has cured and the surface is ready for decoration, reinstall the door, check the reveal again and confirm that paint has not reduced clearances.

The SRC booklet illustrates 1/8-inch clearance at the top and hinge side and recommends doubled studs with the stated material guidance. Use those figures only for the SRC installation covered by that booklet, and obtain the current instructions for the selected market and model.

A painting workflow that preserves the trimless line

Painting cannot correct a frame that was installed out of square, but a disciplined finish sequence prevents small defects from becoming obvious.

1. Inspect before any primer

  • Run a straightedge along both jamb legs and the head; mark lips, hollows and screw heads.
  • Check that the drywall edge is tight to the jamb and that no paper is torn into the reveal.
  • Confirm the opening remains plumb and that the door still swings without rubbing.
  • Remove dust, sanding residue and metal filings before coating.

2. Finish the compound in controlled coats

Use the compound and drying times specified for the system. Feather each coat farther into the wall so sanding does not create a visible step. A Level 5 finish is the relevant target where the product’s coating and project specification call for it; the Studco overview says the jamb is coated to accept a Level 5 finish. Level 5 describes the uniformity of the finished surface, not a promise that every installer’s work will meet that standard automatically.

3. Protect the jamb and reveal

Mask the door rebate and hinge pockets with a tape that will not leave adhesive on the coating. Do not force a knife into the corner to cut tape; that can score the finish and create a line that catches light. Remove masking while the final coat is still workable, following the paint manufacturer’s timing.

4. Prime according to the substrate

Use the primer specified for the compound and the jamb’s factory coating. A drywall sealer may be appropriate for the board and compound, while the metal edge may require a compatible metal or adhesion primer. Keep those materials within the coating system approved for the project; do not assume a general-purpose wall primer is suitable for every steel finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Apply the finish coats consistently

Maintain the same sheen and application method across the wall and the jamb-side transition. Dark or satin colors can emphasize surface waves, while a flatter finish can reduce reflected highlights but may have different cleaning performance. Paint the wall first or last according to the manufacturer’s recoat window, but keep wet edges and avoid loading paint into the door gap.

6. Recheck after curing

Once the coating has hardened, close the door slowly and inspect the reveal from both sides. Remove any nibs before they become impact points, and adjust the strike or hinges only within the limits of the door and jamb instructions.

Clearances, framing and tolerance checks

The exact tolerance depends on the selected model and door hardware. The SRC instructions provide a useful example: 1/8-inch clearance at the top and hinge side, a level jamb tight to the stud opening, and doubled studs where specified. Treat those as documented SRC requirements, not a blanket EzyJamb rule.

Before finishing, make these checks:

  • The opening is square by diagonal measurement, level at the head and plumb at both sides.
  • The hinge-side studs are reinforced as required for the door weight and the manufacturer’s fastening pattern.
  • Screws are seated without distorting the jamb or breaking the drywall surface.
  • The door leaf is the specified thickness and has the correct hinge and latch preparation.
  • The finished floor is established, so the door height and bottom clearance are not guessed.

Durability claims: what is established and what is not

Studco’s product overview reports that EzyJamb surpassed a “10,000 ‘Door Slam’ test.” That is a manufacturer statement; the reviewed page does not publish an independent report, test protocol, test conditions or date. It should not be presented as an independent durability certification. For a high-traffic, institutional or warranty-sensitive project, request the applicable test documentation and confirm that the tested configuration matches the jamb, door, hinges and installation you are specifying.

Common problems and practical fixes

The jamb is proud of the wall

Likely cause: the wall-thickness build-up was underestimated, or an SRC was ordered to the wrong dimension. Fix: stop finishing, measure the complete lining and ask the supplier whether the model permits correction. Do not bury a proud edge under extra compound; it will remain visible and may compromise the rebate.

The reveal is wider at one end

Likely cause: the opening or jamb is out of square, or the door is not centered on its hinges. Fix: check plumb, level and diagonals before sanding more compound. Correct the mechanical alignment first, then refinish the edge.

Paint flakes at the corner

Likely cause: incompatible primer, contamination, excessive coating thickness or a sharp damaged edge. Fix: remove loose material, clean the substrate, use the compatible primer specified for the coating and feather the repair into the surrounding finish.

The door rubs after painting

Likely cause: the pre-finish fit was not checked, or paint has built up in the rebate. Fix: identify whether the interference is at the hinge side, head, latch or floor. Remove only the excess coating first; hinge or strike adjustments should follow the door and hardware instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The selected hinge does not fit

Likely cause: a concealed hinge was assumed to be compatible because it appeared in a project photograph. Fix: verify the exact EzyJamb model, hinge pocket dimensions, screw locations, door thickness and load rating with the supplier before cutting or drilling.

Ordering and project handover checklist

  • Country and current product edition confirmed.
  • Model identified as EZC Classic Adjust or SRC Single Rebate.
  • Left- or right-hand handing recorded.
  • Door width, height, thickness, weight and swing recorded.
  • Finished wall thickness measured after all lining layers are selected.
  • Frame height selected, including whether 2040 mm or 2340 mm is available for the project.
  • Hinge, latch and strike compatibility checked.
  • Rough-opening dimensions and stud reinforcement issued to the framing crew.
  • Current installation instructions supplied to the installer.
  • Paint, primer, compound and masking materials checked for compatibility with the jamb coating.
  • Door fit inspected before mudding and again after the final coating cures.

Availability, pricing and approvals

Current price, stock, lead time and local code approval are not established in the available product information. Treat EzyJamb as a specification-led building product, not an off-the-shelf door casing. A distributor or project supplier can quote the selected configuration, but the order should remain conditional on written confirmation of model, region, dimensions, handing, wall thickness, door and hinge compatibility, and any required technical approval.

When EzyJamb is the right design choice

Specify a trimless EzyJamb when the project values an uninterrupted painted wall, crisp square-set openings and a concealed-frame aesthetic enough to justify early coordination and higher finishing discipline. It is especially suited to contemporary interiors where visible casing would compete with the wall plane.

Choose a conventional architraved frame instead when the wall build-up is still changing, the door and hardware are not selected, access for careful finishing is limited, or the project needs a readily replaceable trim detail. EzyJamb’s clean appearance is a consequence of integrating the frame with the wall; that same integration is why late changes are expensive and conspicuous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every EzyJamb frame adjustable?

No. EZC Classic Adjust is the two-piece adjustable option described by Studco. SRC Single Rebate is a one-piece jamb made for a specified wall thickness, so its dimension must be established before ordering.

What standard heights are listed for EzyJamb?

The Lattira Source catalog lists 2040 mm and 2340 mm entries. Confirm current regional availability, handing and the complete frame dimensions with the supplier because catalog codes and options can vary by market.

Can the reported 10,000 door-slam result be treated as certification?

No. It is a durability claim published by Studco. The reviewed overview does not provide an independent report or test protocol, so project teams should request documentation for the exact configuration when certification matters.

The Bottom Line

EzyJamb delivers the clean contemporary doorway by making the steel jamb part of the drywall finish rather than adding visible casing afterward. Select EZC or SRC from the actual wall build-up, lock in handing, door and hinges before framing, follow the model-specific installation instructions, and treat the paint finish as a precision edge—not a cosmetic cover for framing errors.
