The Faber-Castell 250th Anniversary set was a numbered, handcrafted wooden artist-supply cabinet released in 2011—not an ordinary pencil pouch. Only 1,761 cases were made, and the original set is no longer available from Faber-Castell. Its extensive collection of pencils and accessories made it a collector’s piece as much as a working art kit.
What is the Faber-Castell 250th anniversary pencil case?
Its full name is the 250th Anniversary Limited Edition Art & Graphic Wood Case Set, also known as the Art & Graphic jubilee cabinet. Faber-Castell released it in 2011 to mark 250 years since the company’s founding in 1761. The wooden case was hand-crafted to hold an expansive collection of artist materials and accessories.
How many cases were made?
Faber-Castell USA said the edition was limited to 1,761 cases, a number chosen to match the company’s founding year. Each case was numbered and certified. Those details are useful when assessing a secondhand set, but a serial number or certificate by itself does not establish that a particular listing is authentic.
What was inside the set?
The contents combined several major Faber-Castell drawing and painting ranges, along with tools and accessories:
#1 Best Overall
- Ideal for drawing students - artists and designers
- Superior leads made of finely ground graphite and clay
- Pure - premium quality pencils are smooth - never scratchy
- Ideal for sketching, drawing and writing
- 120 Polychromos artist colour pencils
- 120 Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils
- 120 Polychromos artist pastels
- 60 Pitt pastel pencils
- 15 Castell 9000 graphite pencils
- Brushes, a porcelain water pot, erasers and other accessories
The breadth of the assortment—not just the number of pencils—distinguished the set from a conventional pencil case. For someone looking for the materials rather than the collectible cabinet, the relevant product families are Polychromos, Albrecht Dürer and Castell 9000.
Is the anniversary case still available?
No longer through Faber-Castell: the company’s support information says the 2011 edition sold out and is no longer available. A case offered for sale now is therefore a secondary-market item, and its condition and contents may differ from the original complete set.

Faber-Castell USA has also warned about suspicious offers claiming to sell anniversary sets cheaply. Treat an unusually low price as a reason to verify the offer carefully, not as proof of a bargain.
How to assess a secondhand listing
Before considering a purchase, ask for current, detailed photographs and verify the specific case being sold. Check these points together rather than relying on a single claim:

- Contents: Compare the inventory with the listed pencils and accessories; ask which items are missing, used or replaced.
- Case and hardware: Look for damage to the wood, hinges, closures and interior fittings, and ask how the case was stored.
- Number and certificate: Request clear images of the case number and certificate, then check that the details correspond to the offered item.
- Provenance and seller: Ask about the set’s ownership history and assess whether the seller can substantiate it. Use a transaction method with appropriate buyer protections.
- Shipping: A large wooden case and its contents can be damaged in transit. Confirm the packing plan, insurance and responsibility for shipping damage before paying.
- Price: Faber-Castell USA recorded an original retail price of $1,700 in 2011. That historical price is a reference point, not a current valuation; the evidence here does not establish a present resale value.
What if you want the supplies, not the collector’s case?
Consider buying the relevant Faber-Castell ranges separately: Polychromos colour pencils, Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils and Castell 9000 graphite pencils. This avoids paying for a collectible cabinet when your priority is drawing or painting materials. The anniversary set’s past retail price should not be treated as a guide to the price of these separate products.
