FabPod is a meeting-room enclosure at RMIT Design Hub that was engineered to reduce echo without making the room acoustically lifeless. Its designers used hyperboloid geometry to scatter reflections, then refined the form through computer modelling, acoustic simulation and physical tests. Woven Image Echopanel appears in the project’s sponsor credits, but the available project account does not identify the exact panel type, quantity or location installed in the pod.
That distinction matters: FabPod is a documented acoustic-design experiment, while EchoPanel is a separate PET decorative acoustic-panel product whose suitability can be discussed from its published specifications. The project demonstrates a design method, not a retail kit or a quantified product test.

What FabPod is and what is actually documented
FabPod is a prototype meeting-room enclosure built inside the open-plan workplace environment of RMIT Design Hub in Melbourne. Daniel Davis’s project account records completion in March 2013 on Level 9 of Building 100. Sapphire Aluminium’s project record likewise describes an enclosure for meetings within RMIT’s open-plan office and identifies a digitally driven, custom-fabrication process.
| Question | Documented answer |
|---|---|
| What is FabPod? | An acoustically tuned meeting-room enclosure and design prototype. |
| Where is it? | Level 9, Building 100, RMIT Design Hub, Melbourne. |
| When was it completed? | March 2013, according to the project accounts by Daniel Davis and Sapphire Aluminium. |
| What was the acoustic objective? | Minimise echo while retaining a lively, usable room rather than creating an acoustically dead space. |
| What is EchoPanel’s verified connection? | Woven Image Echopanel is listed in the project sponsor credits. Exact installation details are not stated in the accessible project account. |
The Architecture & Design page dated 20 July 2018 carries the headline about EchoPanel panels minimising echo at FabPod, but the accessible page extraction exposes the headline and page shell rather than the article body. Installation-specific claims therefore should come from the project records that actually describe the work, not from assumptions based on that headline.

Why the designers did not simply absorb every reflection
Echo is a timing problem: a voice reaches a listener directly, then arrives again after reflecting from hard surfaces. In an open-plan workplace, large parallel surfaces and irregular background noise can make speech less intelligible. The conventional response is to add absorption, but covering every surface with highly absorptive material can produce a room that feels unnaturally dull. Davis describes FabPod’s brief as finding a middle ground—less prolonged reflection, but enough acoustic life for conversation and occupancy.
Absorption and scattering do different jobs
Sound absorption converts part of the incident acoustic energy into heat within a material, reducing the energy available for later reflections. Scattering, or diffusion, redirects reflections in many directions so that no single strong echo dominates. A room can use both approaches, but they are not interchangeable. A porous panel can reduce reflected energy; a shaped surface can redistribute the reflections that remain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFabPod’s design emphasis was scattering. Davis says the hyperboloids were positioned to maximise sound scattering and characterises the resulting acoustic as warm and diffuse. That wording describes a qualitative design outcome, not a published reverberation-time measurement or a laboratory rating for a particular panel.
How hyperboloid geometry was used
Curved forms break up strong, repeated paths
A hyperboloid is a doubly curved geometric form. In an enclosure made from flat, parallel walls, a reflection can bounce back along a predictable path and reinforce an audible slap or flutter. A field of curved, angled surfaces changes those paths. Instead of returning as one concentrated wavefront, sound is spread across directions and locations, reducing the chance that a listener hears one dominant delayed copy of a voice.

The geometry was not selected as decoration added after the fact. Davis’s account says the FabPod form grew from earlier investigations into sound scattering by hyperboloids. Workshops in 2012 explored how to minimise echo while preserving a lively acoustic, so the shape, panel layout and practical construction constraints were developed together.
Positioning mattered as much as the shape
Identical curved elements would not automatically produce the same result in every room. Their orientation and spacing determine which reflection paths are interrupted and where energy is redirected. Davis reports that the hyperboloids were positioned specifically to maximise scattering. The account does not publish a general formula that can be copied into another room, nor does it provide a quantified FabPod-versus-baseline acoustic result.
From digital model to assembled pod
Parametric modelling and acoustic simulation
The project team used parametric modelling, allowing geometric relationships to be adjusted systematically rather than redrawn manually for every iteration. Sapphire Aluminium describes a workflow combining digital modelling, acoustic simulation and mass-customised CNC prototyping. This is important because a theoretically effective curve still has to be divided into manufacturable pieces, joined accurately and fitted inside the available footprint.
Computer predictions were checked physically
Davis describes both software-based and physical sound tests. The team iterated the design instead of treating a single computer model as proof of performance. Physical tests can reveal effects that a simplified model misses, including gaps between parts, joint tolerances, furniture, occupants and the way real surfaces reflect at different frequencies.

Panelisation and fabrication constraints shaped the result
The project account says the enclosure was divided into 180 assembled bricks. Five-axis routing was used to produce the required forms, and Davis reports that final assembly took roughly a week. These details show why FabPod should not be read as a standard acoustic-panel installation: its appearance and behaviour depended on custom geometry, digital fabrication and a substantial assembly sequence.
Sapphire Aluminium’s project page lists spun aluminium as a product in its own project record. That material entry belongs to Sapphire Aluminium’s description of its contribution and should not be conflated with EchoPanel. The sponsor credit for Woven Image does not, by itself, establish that every visible brick or a particular aluminium component was made from EchoPanel.

The documented sponsorship
Woven Image Echopanel is named in FabPod’s sponsor credits. That is a real, editorially relevant connection between the product family and the project. The accessible account does not state which EchoPanel format was used, how many panels were supplied, where they were placed, or what share of the pod’s acoustic behaviour can be attributed to them.
Consequently, “EchoPanel acoustic panels at FabPod” is a useful search description for the documented sponsorship, but it is not evidence that the bespoke pod is sold as an EchoPanel kit. Nor does it establish a current retail listing, seller, price or installation specification.

Published product descriptions
Hurford’s product page describes EchoPanel as a decorative panel substrate with acoustic performance and a fabric-like finish. It identifies the material as 100% PET and says it contains up to 60% post-consumer content. Those are claims attributed to that product page; they are not independent lifecycle findings.
ArchDaily’s product catalogue describes EchoPanel as a PET acoustic panel available in 12 mm and 24 mm products, with uses including walls, ceilings, screens, partitions and custom installations. The same catalogue describes recycled-fibre content as 60%–80%. Because the two sources present different recycled-content descriptions, they should not be merged into one universal percentage. A specification should identify the exact product version and source date.
| Product detail | Source-specific description | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Material | 100% PET, according to Hurford’s product page. | Attribute to that page and product description. |
| Post-consumer content | Up to 60%, according to Hurford’s page. | “Up to” is a maximum claim, not a guaranteed percentage for every panel. |
| Recycled-fibre content | 60%–80%, according to ArchDaily’s catalogue entry. | Keep this range separate from Hurford’s wording and verify the specified version. |
| Thicknesses listed | 12 mm and 24 mm in the ArchDaily catalogue. | Thickness affects stiffness, absorption and detailing; it does not identify what FabPod used. |
| Architectural applications | Walls, ceilings, screens, partitions and custom installations. | These are application categories, not proof of installation at FabPod. |
Development history in the product record
Hurford’s page attributes product development to Woven Image and RMIT’s Centre for Design and says research began in 1997. ArchDaily’s catalogue says EchoPanel launched in 2004. Those dates describe the product’s reported development and launch history, not the date of FabPod’s completion.

Start with the acoustic brief
“Make it quiet” is too vague to guide geometry or material selection. FabPod’s brief was more precise: reduce echo while retaining a warm, diffuse and lively room. A different room might prioritise speech privacy, music playback, concentration or reverberant energy. The target determines whether scattering, absorption or a combination should lead the design.

Separate the reflection problem from the material problem
Before choosing a panel, identify whether the dominant issue is excessive reflected energy, a few strong flutter paths, poor speech intelligibility or sound entering from outside. Absorptive PET panels can be part of a treatment strategy, but they cannot substitute for geometry when a room’s problem is a concentrated reflection. Conversely, scattering alone does not remove energy from the room.
Model, prototype and listen
FabPod’s documented workflow combined computational work with physical tests and iteration. A practical project should follow the same logic: model the proposed surfaces, build a representative section, test it with the furniture and occupancy conditions that matter, then revise the design. A small sample that sounds effective in isolation does not prove that a complete room will meet a target.
Check the buildability early
FabPod’s 180-brick assembly and five-axis routing demonstrate the cost of bespoke geometry. For a conventional room, compare the acoustic benefit of custom curves with simpler options such as angled surfaces, suspended baffles or wall panels installed with a deliberate air gap. The right choice depends on space, budget, fire requirements, cleaning, access to services and the desired visual language.
How to specify PET acoustic panels responsibly
- Define the room use. Record whether the priority is speech clarity, privacy, reduced flutter, lower overall reverberation or a combination.
- Map hard surfaces and reflection paths. Note parallel walls, glazing, ceilings, doors and large desks before deciding where treatment belongs.
- Set the frequency objective. Ask the supplier or acoustic consultant for performance data across the frequencies relevant to voices or other sound sources, rather than relying on a generic “acoustic” label.
- Specify thickness and mounting. Compare 12 mm and 24 mm options where those products are available, and document any air gap, backing or frame because installation changes performance.
- Request compliance documents. Check fire classification, emissions information, cleaning guidance and installation details for the exact product and region.
- Verify sustainability claims. Record whether a recycled-content statement applies to the named product, a product family or a particular production version; do not combine percentages from different pages.
- Test the finished room. Confirm the result after furniture, lighting, occupancy and doors are in place. A panel catalogue cannot predict the acoustic outcome of a custom enclosure by itself.
Limits of the available evidence
No named statistic with a clearly established publication year is available for FabPod’s acoustic performance. The documented descriptions support the design intent and process, including hyperboloid scattering and the reported warm, diffuse result, but they do not establish a numerical echo reduction, reverberation-time change or speech-intelligibility score.
Likewise, the sources do not provide a matched performance test comparing EchoPanel with another panel in the same FabPod geometry. Any ranking of acoustic products would therefore go beyond the evidence. A fair comparison would need the same room, coverage, thickness, mounting, frequency range and measurement method.
Bottom line for readers researching FabPod or EchoPanel
FabPod’s achievement is its integrated method: a clear acoustic brief, hyperboloid geometry arranged for scattering, digital and physical testing, and fabrication detailed enough to produce 180 custom bricks. EchoPanel’s documented role is sponsorship, while the product references establish a PET decorative acoustic-panel family used for architectural applications. If you are studying the project, treat the geometry and iterative testing as the transferable lesson. If you are specifying panels, verify the exact product, thickness, mounting and compliance evidence instead of inferring them from FabPod’s appearance.
