If you mean sewing patterns for fabric storage bins, start by choosing the finished size and structure you need. The documented options below range from free, multi-size tutorials to padded bins with lids, windows, handles or dividers. Only five named patterns could be substantiated from the available publisher descriptions; the remaining six entries are feature-based directions to help you select or adapt a pattern without treating unverified listings as tested recommendations.
Five identifiable fabric storage-bin patterns
| Pattern | What the publisher describes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| MindyMakes fabric baskets | Free PDF pattern in three sizes; a paid PDF set adds six nesting sizes. The tutorial lists suitable fabric and standard sewing tools. | A basic basket set or coordinated nesting collection |
| Sweet Red Poppy fabric storage bins | Free pattern and step-by-step tutorial with multiple sizes. The instructions cover printing and assembling the PDF. | Readers who want a guided printable tutorial |
| SewCanShe fold-over-lid bin | A bin with a vinyl viewing window. The companion listing gives an approximate finished size of 15 inches wide by 10 inches deep by 10 inches tall and calls for quilting cotton, foam stabilizer and 12-gauge vinyl. | Covered storage where contents should remain visible |
| The Polka Dot Chair padded bin | Digital PDF and mailed printed-pattern formats are described, with an optional divider variation. | A structured bin for separating contents |
| Missouri Star nesting bins | A three-size pattern designed so the finished bins nest when not in use. | Storage that must collapse into a compact stack |
Availability, formats and prices can change, so check each publisher’s current listing before buying or downloading. These descriptions are not a quality ranking or a claim that the patterns were independently sewn and tested.

Six useful pattern directions when comparing other designs
1. Choose a single everyday size
A one-size pattern is often the simplest route when you already know the shelf, cubby or drawer dimensions. Measure the opening and compare it with the pattern’s finished dimensions, not the paper-piece dimensions.

- STORAGE SPACE: Each collapsible fabric cube storage bin is suitable for organizing a variety of items
2. Choose a multi-size set
Multi-size files are useful when several rooms need coordinated containers. Confirm whether each size is included in one download and whether the sizes share the same construction.
3. Prioritize nesting
Nesting bins taper or otherwise reduce in size so they store inside one another empty. This is a specific design feature, not a guarantee of every multi-size pattern.
Rank #2
- A practical yet stylish storage solution, this pack of 6 bins features a classic checkerboard pattern in white and black, offering a bold visual contrast
- Ideal for organizing essentials, the square shape and appealing hue fit seamlessly into any room's decor
- Can be used to declutter spaces such as closets, shelves, or offices, keeping items neatly stowed away

- 11” L x 11” W x 11” H
4. Look for a padded or stabilized wall
Interfacing, foam or another stabilizer gives a bin enough body to stand open. More structure usually means additional layers, bulk at seams and a need to follow the pattern’s pressing and seam instructions carefully.

How to print and assemble a PDF pattern
Sweet Red Poppy’s tutorial gives a concrete scaling check: set the printer to Actual Size or 100%, print the page containing the test square, and measure the square before printing the remaining pages. If it is not one inch, correct the printer or PDF scaling first. Assemble pages according to that pattern’s alignment marks, then cut only after the full template is positioned.

How to choose among the options
| Your priority | Start with | Check before cutting |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest upfront cost | A free tutorial such as MindyMakes or Sweet Red Poppy | Whether the current download remains free and what pages or signup steps are required |
| Compact empty storage | MindyMakes’ nesting set or Missouri Star’s nesting design | Number of sizes and the finished dimensions of each |
| Contents visible | SewCanShe’s windowed, fold-over-lid bin | Vinyl gauge, stabilizer and the stated finished size |
| Internal organization | The Polka Dot Chair bin with its divider option | Whether the divider is included in the format you are purchasing |
| Maximum rigidity | A padded or foam-stabilized design | Required stabilizer, layer count and sewing-machine clearance |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Printing a PDF with “Fit to Page” and then cutting fabric from a mis-scaled template.
- Using a fabric or stabilizer heavier than the pattern was designed for without checking seam bulk.
- Assuming a three-size pattern nests; nesting must be stated by the publisher.
- Buying a printed pattern when you expected an instant PDF, or vice versa.
- Substituting ordinary clear plastic for a pattern that specifies sewing-grade vinyl.
- Ignoring seam allowances when comparing the template with a shelf opening.
A practical selection checklist
- Record the maximum width, depth and height available.
- Decide whether the bin must stand open, close with a lid, show its contents or divide them.
- Choose free, digital-paid or mailed-print format according to how you work.
- Confirm current size count, finished dimensions and materials on the publisher’s page.
- Print and verify the test square before cutting.
- Make one prototype from inexpensive fabric if the fit is critical.
The Bottom Line
The strongest documented choices cover different needs: MindyMakes and Missouri Star emphasize nesting, Sweet Red Poppy emphasizes a printable guided tutorial, SewCanShe adds a lid and vinyl window, and The Polka Dot Chair offers padding with an optional divider. Select by finished dimensions and construction features, then follow that pattern’s own materials and printing instructions.
