The Facebook logo usually means the social network’s product mark—the familiar lowercase “f” icon, Facebook wordmark, or an approved combination—not the separate Meta corporate logo. For a current project, start with Meta’s own brand resources and check the asset’s label and usage rules; a logo file being downloadable does not make every use unrestricted.
What the Facebook logo looks like
Facebook product branding appears in more than one form: a standalone “f” icon, the Facebook wordmark, and, in some contexts, a combined lockup. The icon’s surrounding field can vary by asset or application. These forms are not interchangeable in every layout, so choose the one intended for your use rather than treating any image found online as the universal current logo.

Facebook is a product; Meta is its parent company’s corporate identity. In 2019, Facebook announced a separate company brand and said the Facebook app would retain its own branding. The announcement explains the distinction: Meta’s 2019 company-brand announcement.
For the compact product identifier, an archived copy of Facebook’s 2019 brand guide describes the “f” as representing Facebook the product. Because that guide is an archived third-party reproduction, use it as historical guidance, not proof of current rules: archived Facebook Brand Assets Guide.

Where to get a Facebook logo
- For a current project: look for Meta’s current Brand Resources and choose an asset explicitly labelled for Facebook and for your intended use. Meta’s terms refer users to its brand resources and restrict use of its marks to what is expressly permitted or covered by prior written permission: Meta terms.
- For a press or corporate-history reference: Meta’s 2019 announcement provides context for the company-brand change and included official corporate-brand assets. Do not mistake a corporate asset for a Facebook product icon.
- For historical comparison: Wikimedia Commons maintains archived files, including a wordmark labelled as used approximately August 2005 through July 2015, a 2019 “f” logo, and a 2019 PNG. These are archival references, not confirmation that a file is currently approved for your use: historical wordmark, 2019 “f” SVG, and 2019 logo PNG.
A search result or third-party mirror may be compressed, recolored, cropped, or unofficial. Prefer the brand owner’s asset where possible. A screenshot is generally a poor substitute for design work because it may include interface elements, be low resolution, or show an older version.
Choose a file format for the job

Choose the file format after identifying the correct asset. Format alone does not establish that a logo is official or that its use is permitted.

How the Facebook logo changed
- Early identity: Facebook used a wordmark as the service grew; historical files document versions from earlier periods.
- Approximately 2005–2015: Wikimedia labels one commonly circulated wordmark as used from approximately August 2005 to July 2015. The dates describe that archive’s file label, not necessarily every regional or interface use.
- 2015-era refresh: The wordmark received a cleaner type treatment. Do not assume every visual change was a formal worldwide rebrand; assets and product interfaces can vary.
- 2019 distinction: Facebook announced separate corporate branding while the Facebook app kept its product identity. The Facebook product mark should not be confused with the later Meta corporate logo.
- Later icon variations: App and platform assets can differ in presentation. Use a current first-party asset for a present-day interface rather than inferring a universal design from an archive.
Wikimedia’s labels are useful for historical comparison, but they are not a complete official change log: wordmark archive and 2019 icon archive.
Use the logo without implying an endorsement
Meta’s terms say its trademarks, logos, and related marks may be used only as expressly allowed by its brand guidelines or with prior written permission. Check the current Meta Brand Resources before publishing. The archived April 2019 brand guide advises using approved assets and not modifying the mark’s design or color, but it should not be treated as current policy without checking newer guidance.

- Use the Facebook mark only to identify Facebook, and make the context clear.
- Do not present Facebook as a sponsor, partner, certifier, or endorser unless that relationship is real and you have authorization to make the claim.
- Do not make the mark part of your own business logo, or stretch, rotate, recolor, or add effects to it unless applicable current guidance expressly permits the treatment.
- For a link to a Facebook page, use an appropriate approved product asset and make the destination evident.
- For merchandise, packaging, promotional campaigns, or other commercial branding, seek permission rather than relying on a downloadable image or an old guide.
Meta’s open-source trademark policy describes a general nominative-use principle—use only the mark needed to identify the product and do not imply sponsorship or affiliation—but it applies to Meta’s open-source trademarks, not as a complete Facebook-logo policy: Meta open-source trademark policy.

Some Wikimedia file pages include public-domain assessments, but those assessments do not grant blanket permission to use Facebook as a brand or imply affiliation. The file pages themselves distinguish copyright from trademark concerns: 2019 SVG file information and 2019 PNG file information. The legal outcome for an editorial, advertising, or commercial use depends on the facts and jurisdiction; for a consequential campaign or merchandise, obtain legal advice.
