A facecam overlay is artwork placed around or over a webcam feed in a livestream, recording, or video call. It can be a transparent border, animated frame, nameplate, logo treatment, glow, or other decorative layer. It changes the camera’s appearance in the scene—not the camera’s focus, exposure, background, or image quality.
The simplest reliable setup uses a webcam source plus a transparent graphic above it. A frame alone does not make a rectangular webcam circular; a separate mask is required for a circle or other custom crop.
Facecam overlay, mask, and background: what is the difference?
These terms describe different layers of a composition:

- Frame: visible artwork around the camera opening. It may include a border, labels, social handles, shadows, or animation.
- Mask: a crop that removes parts of the webcam image, creating a circle, rounded rectangle, polygon, or another shape.
- Background: artwork behind the webcam source.
- Filter: an effect applied to the camera itself, such as color correction, blur, chroma key, or background removal.
- Full stream overlay: a complete scene theme containing alerts, chat, panels, transitions, and other elements.
A circular border placed over an unmasked camera still leaves the camera image rectangular. A circular result normally requires both a mask and a frame.
Why use a facecam overlay?
- It creates consistent visual branding across streams and recordings.
- It makes the camera position obvious over busy gameplay or presentation footage.
- It can reserve space for a name, sponsor, social handle, or stream label.
- It adds polish without replacing the camera.
The trade-offs are equally practical: an oversized or animated design consumes screen space, can distract from the speaker, and may expose empty margins or black bars. No frame fixes poor lighting, focus, framing, or camera quality.
Choose the right file

Elgato’s overlay guidance identifies PNG for static transparent artwork, WEBM for animated transparency, and separate masks for non-rectangular designs: overlay documentation.
Add a frame in OBS Studio
- Open OBS Studio and select or create the scene.
- In Sources, click +, choose Video Capture Device, select the webcam, and confirm.
- Resize and position the webcam in the preview.
- Click + again and choose Image for a static file or the appropriate media source for an animation.
- Select the PNG or animation file.
- Move the overlay source above the webcam in the Sources list. Sources higher in the list appear on top.
- Align the camera opening with the artwork, then lock both sources.

Positioning controls that help
- Ctrl temporarily disables snapping.
- Alt crops while dragging a source edge.
- Ctrl+F fits a source to the screen; Ctrl+S stretches it to the screen.
- Ctrl+D centers a source; Ctrl+R resets its size and position.
Prefer cropping or matching aspect ratios over stretching. Stretching can distort faces and make the camera no longer fit the frame.
Create a circular or custom-shaped facecam
- Add the webcam as a Video Capture Device.
- Right-click it, choose Filters, and add Image Mask/Blend.
- Load the supplied mask and select the mask type specified for that file.
- Check the crop against both light and dark backgrounds.
- Add the decorative frame as a separate image source above the masked camera.
- Test head, shoulders, and side-to-side movement before locking the sources.
OBS also provides Crop/Pad, Color Correction, Scaling/Aspect Ratio, Color Key, and Chroma Key filters. The mask’s alpha channel and dimensions determine the exact result.

Align the camera without distortion
- Make the frame temporarily prominent or add it first.
- Resize the webcam until its visible edges fit the frame opening.
- Crop unwanted edges instead of stretching the source.
- Check the top of the head, shoulders, and both sides.
- Lean toward each edge to confirm the face stays inside the intended opening.
- Check the scene at the actual output resolution, not only the editor preview.
- Lock the sources after alignment.
Common layouts are 16:9, 4:3, 9:16, and 1:1. Match the camera and artwork where possible, or choose a frame with enough internal margin for deliberate cropping.
Add one in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open the scene or scene collection in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Add the webcam as a camera or video source.
- Add the PNG as an image source or the animation as a media source.
- Place the graphic above the webcam, resize both, and align them.
- Lock the sources when finished.
The concepts are similar to OBS, but source labels, import behavior, browser sources, and subscription features can differ. Streamlabs’ current getting-started guide is at Streamlabs Desktop setup. Older guides may call the application “Streamlabs OBS” or “SLOBS”; the current desktop branding is Streamlabs Desktop.

Remove the webcam background
A decorative frame does not remove the room behind you. For a physical green screen, right-click the webcam, open Filters, add Chroma Key, and tune similarity, smoothness, spill reduction, and opacity until the background disappears without cutting into hair or clothing. OBS describes this workflow in its webcam FAQ.
Software background removal may require a camera utility, plugin, or third-party application. Requirements and pricing vary, so verify compatibility for the specific tool. If you do not need background removal, a normal rectangular camera with a transparent frame is the least demanding setup.
Use an animated overlay safely
Before adding an animated asset, verify its transparency, loop behavior, frame rate, resolution, and whether it contains sound. An animation without an alpha channel can display a black, white, or colored rectangle. WEBM is commonly used for transparent animation, but support still depends on the file and application. If motion adds little value, a static PNG is simpler and usually lighter on system resources.
Send the composed facecam to Zoom or Discord
- Build the scene in OBS.
- Start Virtual Camera from OBS’s Controls dock.
- In Zoom, Discord, or another receiving application, select OBS Virtual Camera as the camera.
- Confirm that the receiving application has not cropped, mirrored, or reframed the image.
OBS Virtual Camera can output Program, Preview, a selected Scene, or a selected Source. Choose carefully: Preview can expose scene edits during a live call. See the Virtual Camera guide.

Troubleshoot the common failures
A black or white rectangle appears
The file is opaque or its alpha channel is unsupported. Inspect it on a checkerboard background, use a genuinely transparent PNG, or test a supported animated format with alpha.
The frame is misaligned
Different aspect ratios, internal padding, stretching, or a changed webcam resolution are typical causes. Match ratios where possible, then crop and reposition rather than distort.
The frame disappears behind the camera
Move the frame higher in the Sources list.
The camera disappears
Hide the frame temporarily. It may be opaque, covering the entire camera, or positioned over it without a transparent opening.
The circle still shows a square camera
Add an Image Mask/Blend filter. A decorative border alone does not crop the video.
Hair or shoulders are cut out
This is normally a chroma-key or background-removal issue. Improve lighting, separate yourself from the background, and tune the key conservatively.
The overlay is blurry
The asset may be too small, enlarged beyond its intended resolution, or being scaled by the output or browser source. Use artwork at least as large as the final camera window.
The camera is mirrored
Check mirroring in the camera properties, OBS, and the receiving application separately. Text and logos make an unintended mirror obvious.
The frame shifts after changing canvas size
Changing OBS’s Base (Canvas) Resolution can require sources to be resized or realigned. Recheck the composition after every canvas change.
A locked source will not move
Unlock it in Sources, adjust it, and lock it again.

Prices, discounts, regional taxes, and subscription terms change. A subscription may provide access rather than perpetual ownership. Read the vendor license for streaming, resale, redistribution, template creation, and client work before using an asset commercially. A browser-source widget is useful for live alerts or labels, but a local PNG or WEBM is safer for a purely decorative frame because it does not depend on a hosted service or network connection.
When no overlay is better
Skip the frame for minimalist streams, very small camera windows, or content where an unobstructed face matters more than branding. A simple transparent border is often preferable to a busy theme, and a better camera improves exposure and sharpness but does not replace sound scene composition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a green screen for a facecam overlay?
No. A transparent frame around a normal rectangular webcam does not require a green screen. Chroma Key is needed only when you want to remove a physical background.
