Fair pay in the AI music era starts with a traceable human contribution, a clear licence, and a payout route that lets artists keep or share earnings on purpose. The three options below address different parts of that chain: LANDR Distribution for releasing and splitting income, Audiimax for a licensed catalogue that shares revenue with participating artists, and SOUNDRAW for generated music made from in-house recordings.
What Fair Pay Requires When AI Is Involved
- Record the human work. Keep project files, lyrics, melodies, arrangement decisions, edits and performance stems. The U.S. Copyright Office says entirely AI-generated material is not copyrightable; prompts alone do not make someone the author, while human-authored parts of a mixed work can be protected. - Use consent for identity and source material. Get permission before using a person’s voice or identity, and confirm the terms for covers, samples and commercial use on the service you choose. - Disclose realistic synthetic elements. Spotify supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits and has introduced an AI Persona badge for identities that may be AI-generated. - Leave a payout trail. Name collaborators, set splits before release, and save statements so every payment can be reconciled.

How To Build A Fair-Pay Workflow
- Write a contribution brief. Example: “Create a 90-second instrumental sketch for an independent artist. I will write the topline, replace the bass, perform guitar, arrange the final structure and mix the master.” Treat this as a production plan, and verify that the chosen service supports the input method you intend to use.
- Separate source and generated parts. Label your own recordings, licensed catalogue audio and generated passages in the session. Do not assume a generated output grants rights to a voice, melody or sample that you did not create or license.
- Choose the money route. Use LANDR when the main need is distribution, automatic collaborator splits and an AI-training opt-in or opt-out. Consider Audiimax when you need catalogue music under its stated location-based licence and want participating artists to receive its stated share. Consider SOUNDRAW when its in-house training statement, download formats and royalty terms match your release plan.
- Set credits and splits before upload. List human writers, performers and producers, record each percentage, and retain the agreement. Add AI disclosures where the destination supports them.
- Review the destination rules. For each exported file, save the date, tool, version, human edits, contributors, split percentages, licence confirmation and destination disclosure. This makes a later payment query answerable without guessing.
