Michele Banks, who also works under the name Artologica, is a self-taught Washington, DC–based artist whose watercolor and ink paintings bring scientific imagery into art. Viruses, bacteria, and plant and animal cells appear in work exploring subjects such as memory, connection, the microbiome, neuroscience, and climate change.

Who is Michele Banks?
Banks describes herself as a self-taught artist inspired by science. Her public practice is visual art, not scientific research: she uses scientific forms and ideas as material for paintings about the living world and human experience. The scientific imagery is not merely a catalog of specimens. Banks has said that artists and scientists both seek ways to explore and explain the world. In her work, cellular and branching forms can suggest relationships and processes that are not immediately visible.
Why watercolor and ink?
Banks’s primary media are watercolor on paper and ink on Yupo, a synthetic paper. In a 2025 interview with Amy Stewart, she said, “I started out making watercolors more than 20 years ago and it’s still my primary medium.” She values the translucency of water media, which can suggest what lies beneath a surface, and the branching patterns created as the media flow.

That behavior suits imagery associated with cells and larger natural systems. As Banks puts it in her artist statement, “Watercolor and ink naturally flow into fractal patterns such as those seen in the nervous and circulatory systems, tree branches, and river systems – in fact, everywhere in nature.”
Exhibitions, residency, and public work
Banks’s official CV documents exhibitions at art and science venues, talks, awards, grants, and collection placements. Among its listed exhibitions are “Inspired by Science” at NIH Clinical Center Galleries in 2023 and “Microbiome” at the American Society for Microbiology’s annual meeting in 2022. It also lists a 2018 artist residency at Institut Jacques Monod in Paris and the National Academy of Sciences among selected collections.

The Neuroarts Resource Center reports that the National Academies of Science acquired one of Banks’s COVID ink paintings in 2021; the painting was featured in Convergence II, a book about the collection. The profile also says Banks spoke at the Kennedy Center in 2023. These details are reported by the Neuroarts Resource Center profile.
