The three things most often singled out in practical feng shui advice are unused clutter (especially at the entrance), broken belongings you will not repair, and dead or artificial plants. Removing them is not a guaranteed way to change luck, income, health, or relationships. These are tradition-based recommendations, and feng shui schools disagree about methods and symbols. Use the list as a practical decluttering filter: keep what you use or genuinely value, repair what matters, and clear anything that blocks a usable path.
What this three-item list can—and cannot—tell you
Feng shui is not one universally standardized system. The Feng Shui Institute International explains that schools and sources differ, including whether a floor plan should be read from the front door or by compass directions. It also notes that many decorative “cures” sold as feng shui are not part of traditional or classical practice.

The three categories below summarize recurring housekeeping advice presented by the cited practitioners and guides; they are not a list endorsed by every school. Claims about qi, opportunity, prosperity, or relationships describe spiritual interpretations rather than scientifically demonstrated effects. You can follow the organizing principles without buying symbolic objects or adopting a particular school.
A useful way to apply the advice is to ask three questions about each item:
#1 Best Overall
- COMPLETE 5-PIECE BRUSH SET FOR EVERY PAINTING TASK — Includes 1 Inch Flat, 1.5 Inch Angle, 2 Inch Flat, 2 Inch Angle Stubby, and 2.5 Inch Angle brush giving you every size professional painters use daily. Get all 5 for less than the price of a single brush from hardware store brands — professional grade performance at a fraction of the cost. Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.
- ZERO BRISTLE LOSS — GUARANTEED BY PRECISION ADHESIVE BONDING — Every bristle is locked in place with precision-set adhesive that keeps them in the brush — not in your paint job. The coated steel ferrule provides structural support while the adhesive bond ensures clean performance on every stroke. Premium SRT synthetic filaments load more paint and release it evenly for a smooth streak-free finish on walls, ceilings, and trim. Works with latex, oil-based paint, primer, sealer, and wood stain.
- INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
- FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
- TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
- Is it used often enough to earn the space it occupies?
- If it is damaged, will you make a specific repair soon?
- Does it obstruct the front door, a walkway, a work surface, or another area you need to use?
Those questions turn an abstract idea about “energy” into decisions you can make in an afternoon.
1. Unused clutter, starting with anything that crowds the entrance
Why the entryway gets priority
Several practical guides put the main entrance first. Square One’s feng shui overview recommends a clean home and an unobstructed entrance. In a Livingetc feature published 19 February 2026, Feng Shui Master Marie Diamond advises removing shoes, deliveries, storage items, and dying plants that crowd the entry.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Diamond describes the front door as the “mouth of chi” and says it is the primary entry point for energy, opportunity, clients, relationships, and financial flow. Her statement that a crowded entrance signals “there is no space for new opportunities to enter” is her feng shui interpretation, not a measured physical effect. The practical point is still clear: a door that opens fully and a path that can be walked without stepping over possessions are easier to use every day.
What counts as unnecessary clutter
Start with objects that have no current job. Examples mentioned by feng shui experts include shoes no one wears, deliveries waiting to be sorted, storage boxes parked by the door, expired pantry food, old papers and to-do lists, worn door mats, and gifts kept only from guilt. Helen Ye Plehn’s recommendations are reported in Livingetc’s list of items to declutter, which you can read at Livingetc.

Do not interpret “remove” as “throw away immediately.” Sort each object into a destination:
- Keep: You use it, need it for a defined task, or value it enough to maintain.
- Relocate: It belongs elsewhere, such as seasonal footwear moved to a closet or paperwork filed in an office.
- Donate or recycle: It is usable but no longer useful to your household.
- Discard: It is expired, worn out, unsafe, or impossible to pass on responsibly.
A 15-minute entrance reset
- Open the front door as far as it normally needs to go. Note anything it strikes or anything that narrows the walking route.
- Remove every item that is waiting for a decision: parcels, returns, shoes, bags, and loose mail. Put each in a temporary sorting pile away from the doorway.
- Keep only the footwear and outerwear used in the current season. Move the rest to storage or a donation bag.
- Check the mat, light, and threshold. Replace or clean a mat that is worn enough to impede the door or track dirt inside.
- Finish the sorting pile the same day. A “temporary” pile that remains in the hall is still an obstruction.
The goal is not a sparse, showroom-style foyer. A coat rack, shoe tray, umbrella stand, or delivery shelf can stay if it is used and leaves the door and path clear.

Separate meaningful damage from deferred decisions
Broken objects often remain because they trigger one of two feelings: “I will fix this someday” or “I cannot discard it because it matters.” Diamond’s advice, as quoted by Livingetc, is to repair meaningful broken items and release items that are not meaningful. Square One similarly includes repairing broken things among its basic recommendations; its guidance is summarized at Square One.
Neither source establishes that a cracked mug, stopped clock, or damaged chair causes misfortune. The feng shui interpretation is that visible disrepair represents unresolved neglect. A practical reading is simpler: objects that are unusable occupy space, create visual noise, and force you to make the same postponed decision each time you see them.

Use a repair-or-release test
For every damaged item, write down the repair, its cost, and when you will do it. “Fix the lamp” is vague; “order a replacement cord by Friday” is actionable. Keep the item only if all three conditions are true:
- You use it or have a specific planned use.
- The repair is safe and realistically available.
- You are willing to complete the repair within a defined period.
If any condition fails, let the item go through donation, recycling, an electronics collection point, or household waste according to local rules. Do not donate something unsafe merely to avoid throwing it away.

Examples that need a decision
| Item | Keep and repair when… | Release when… |
|---|---|---|
| Chair with a loose joint | The frame is sound and you can schedule tightening or regluing. | It is unstable, unsafe, or duplicates chairs you already use. |
| Cracked dish or glass | It has genuine sentimental value and can be restored safely for display. | The crack makes food or drink use unsafe and it has no meaningful role. |
| Dead appliance | A qualified repair is affordable and the appliance fills a current need. | The repair exceeds its value, parts are unavailable, or you have replaced its function. |
| Damaged gift | You value the relationship or memory and want to preserve the object properly. | You are keeping it solely from obligation and do not want it in your home. |
Photographing a sentimental item before discarding it can preserve the memory without preserving the broken object. That is a personal organizing choice, not a feng shui requirement.
3. Dead or artificial plants
What the cited guidance recommends
Square One’s overview recommends live plants rather than fake or dead plants. Diamond’s entryway advice also calls out dying plants as items to clear. If you are following that interpretation of feng shui, remove plants that have died and artificial plants that remain only as neglected decoration.

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
This guidance should not be read as a demand to buy replacements. A home does not become more “correct” because it contains a certain number of plants. If you do not want to care for live plants, leave the space open, use another object you maintain, or simply keep the area uncluttered.
Decide what to do with each plant
- Revive: Keep a living plant with viable stems or roots if you can identify the care problem and change its light, watering, or potting conditions.
- Compost or discard: Remove a plant that is fully dead, diseased, or attracting pests, following local green-waste rules.
- Relocate: Move a healthy plant away from a doorway or walkway if its pot blocks movement.
- Release: Donate an artificial plant that is in good condition if you no longer want to dust or store it.
Do not keep a dying plant at the entrance while searching for a “feng shui cure.” The practical remedy is to clear the obstruction and decide whether the plant will be cared for.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to choose between keeping, repairing, and removing
When several categories overlap—such as a broken planter blocking the door—use this order:
- Clear the path first. Move anything that prevents the front door, stairs, hallway, or essential work area from being used normally.
- Remove items with no current use. Unused objects are easier decisions than meaningful possessions because their function is already absent.
- Set a repair deadline. Keep a broken item only when the repair is safe, affordable, and scheduled.
- Assess living things honestly. Revive a viable plant, compost a dead one, and do not add replacements to fill an empty corner.
- Choose a responsible exit. Donate usable goods, recycle materials where accepted, and dispose of unsafe or contaminated items correctly.
This sequence prevents a common failure: rearranging clutter instead of reducing it. Feng shui advice about flow cannot make an overfilled storage area usable if every item remains.

A room-by-room reset that follows the three categories
Entry and hall
Keep the door swing, threshold, and walking route clear. Limit shoes and bags to those in active use. Move deliveries and returns out of the hall as soon as they arrive. Check whether a mat, plant pot, or storage basket creates a trip hazard.
Kitchen and pantry
Remove expired food and utensils that no longer work. Repair an appliance only when you have a defined plan and the repair is safe. A clear counter is useful because it restores preparation space; it is not proof that a particular qi pattern has changed.

Gather unfinished repairs, old papers, and gifts you do not want. Decide item by item rather than creating a larger box of postponed decisions. Keep plants that are healthy and positioned where they will not be knocked over.
Bedrooms and storage
Look for clothing, footwear, and equipment that has not been used in the current season. Broken items hidden in a closet still consume storage capacity. Label a repair box with a date; anything still untouched at that date should be reconsidered.
How literal should you be about feng shui?
Readers often encounter conflicting instructions because schools use different maps, terminology, and priorities. The Feng Shui Institute FAQ even reproduces a reader asking whether to overlay a Bagua on the floor plan from the front door or to use compass directions. There is no single answer accepted across all schools, so do not treat this three-category list as a universal test or combine it indiscriminately with every online rule.
If you follow a particular practitioner or lineage, use that method consistently. If you simply want a calmer, more functional home, the same actions stand on their own: remove what you do not use, repair what you value, and keep paths open. You do not need talismans, crystals, mirrors, or other decorative cures; the Feng Shui Institute notes that many such products are absent from traditional and classical practice.
What to do today
Begin at the front door, because the cited advice repeatedly treats a clear entrance as the first priority. Take out anything blocking the route, then choose one broken object to repair or release and one dead or neglected plant to address. Stop when the space is usable and the remaining possessions have a clear purpose. That is a complete decluttering decision, whether you view feng shui as a spiritual tradition, a design philosophy, or simply a prompt to maintain your home.
