Figma temporarily disabled its AI interface-generation feature in July 2024 after repeated tests produced designs that appeared strikingly similar to Apple’s Weather app. Figma denied that the tool had been trained on Apple’s app and attributed the result to a poorly curated, insufficiently varied design system. The capability later returned as First Draft and, as of August 18, 2026, is being incorporated into Figma’s AI agent.

What happened to Figma’s AI design feature?

Figma introduced its AI tools at Config 2024 on June 26, 2024. One feature, initially called Make Designs—also referred to in some coverage as Make Design—was intended to turn a plain-language description into an editable first draft of an interface.

The feature was designed for rapid ideation: a user could describe a product or screen, and Figma would assemble layouts and components that could then be edited in Figma Design. It was not primarily presented as a finished-app generator or a replacement for product design decisions. Figma’s launch announcement described it as a way to explore ideas and reduce repetitive early-stage assembly.

On or around July 1, designer Andy Allen publicly showed that repeatedly prompting the tool to create a weather app produced results that appeared very close to Apple’s Weather app. The example circulated widely and prompted a more serious question than whether an AI mockup looked generic: had Figma’s system memorized, copied, or been trained on an existing commercial application?

On July 2, Figma said it would temporarily disable Make Designs while it investigated and conducted a broader quality-assurance review. The company published a fuller retrospective on July 17. The contemporaneous account from TechCrunch records the public test, the allegations, and Figma’s initial response.

Did Figma train its AI on Apple’s Weather app?

There is no verified evidence in the available record that Figma directly trained Make Designs on Apple’s Weather app. The test established that the output resembled Apple’s app; it did not establish why.

Figma CEO Dylan Field rejected the claim that the feature had been trained on Figma files, Community files, or app designs in the way critics alleged. Figma said the system combined third-party large language models with commissioned design systems. In its retrospective, the company attributed the similarity to assets and examples contained in those systems.

That distinction matters. A similar result can arise from several different causes:

  • memorization or reproduction from model-training data;
  • a hand-built component library that contains overly recognizable patterns;
  • prompt wording that steers a system toward familiar conventions;
  • common visual conventions in weather applications; or
  • a combination of these factors.

Figma’s design-system explanation is the company’s official account, not an independently established forensic finding. The available evidence does not prove that Figma copied Apple’s proprietary source code, trained directly on Apple Weather, or produced an output that a court would deem infringing.

Figma’s explanation: the design system was the problem

According to Figma’s retrospective, the company had commissioned two extensive design systems: one for mobile and one for desktop. They contained hundreds of components and examples showing how those components could be combined.

Figma said some assets were too similar to aspects of real-world applications. When Make Designs received a weather-app prompt, those assets could appear in the generated result. The company also said the system did not provide enough variation and that its QA process failed to detect the issue before launch.

This makes the incident relevant beyond model training. Generative design systems do not produce results from a model in isolation. The libraries, examples, component names, visual defaults, and assembly rules supplied as generation context can strongly influence what users receive. A narrow library can make a general-purpose model repeatedly converge on a familiar-looking product.

Figma’s vice president of design later accepted responsibility for the inadequate QA process and linked the rushed launch to the Config 2024 deadline. The company said it identified and removed the problematic assets, paused Make Designs, and began a wider review before restoring the capability.

Figma did not shut down all of its AI tools

The July 2024 action applied to the interface-generation feature, not to Figma AI as a whole. Figma said other AI features—including Visual Search, layer renaming, and text translation—remained available in limited beta at the time.

That distinction is easy to lose in headlines describing Figma as having “disabled its AI.” The more precise description is that Figma paused one AI-assisted design-generation workflow after a quality and originality failure.

Was Make Designs permanently cancelled?

No. Figma later re-enabled the capability under the name First Draft. The name change was not merely a guarantee that the original interface and workflow remained unchanged. The product’s access rules, entry point, and relationship to other Figma AI tools have evolved.

Current status in 2026

As of August 18, 2026, First Draft functionality is being incorporated into Figma’s AI agent. Figma says that beginning May 20, 2026, the agent became the new entry point for First Draft, with the agent rolling out in beta.

Figma says the agent is available on Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans when AI is enabled. Users on other seat types may be able to try it in draft files, and access can vary by plan, seat type, administrator settings, account category, and beta rollout. Figma says agent use is free during the beta and does not consume AI credits during that period. See Figma’s Config 2026 update and its AI-tools documentation for current conditions.

Figma’s pricing page currently lists a free Starter plan, a Professional Full seat at $16 per month, an Organization Full seat at $55 per month billed annually, and an Enterprise Full seat at $90 per month billed annually. Those prices and included AI-credit allowances can change, so readers should confirm them on Figma’s pricing page and pricing FAQ. Figma’s published guidance says AI tools generally require a paid plan and a Full seat, subject to feature-specific exceptions.

Why the incident matters for originality and intellectual property

The incident did not settle whether Figma or its users infringed Apple’s rights. No available source establishes that Apple sued Figma or that a court ruled the generated designs illegal.

It does illustrate a practical risk: an AI-generated interface can look polished while still being uncomfortably close to a recognizable product. The legal analysis would depend on the specific output, what was copied, the intended use, and the applicable jurisdiction. Different issues could involve copyright, trademark, trade dress, design patents, licensing terms, or other restrictions.

A visual resemblance alone does not automatically establish copyright infringement. Conversely, the absence of direct model training on a particular app would not by itself make every output safe to ship. A human-authored design system can also contain assets or examples that create originality and licensing problems.

Figma’s own warning says AI outputs may be misleading or wrong and should not replace expert review. That warning is particularly important when generated work is intended for a commercial product competing with a major platform.

A practical review checklist for AI-generated UI

Designers can reduce the risk by treating generated screens as exploratory material rather than production-ready work.

  1. Inspect the whole composition. Review layout, hierarchy, navigation, cards, controls, iconography, typography, colors, wording, and interaction patterns.
  2. Compare distinctive patterns. Check the result against prominent products in the same category, especially when it resembles a recognizable platform.
  3. Replace suspicious elements. Do not merely change a color if the layout, symbols, labels, and interaction model remain distinctive and similar.
  4. Use your own design system where possible. Organization-owned components and documented rules provide more control than a generic library, though they still need review.
  5. Keep an audit trail. Save prompts, iterations, edits, source libraries, and the human decisions that turned a draft into the final design.
  6. Review brand and legal risk before release. Escalate high-risk work to brand or legal counsel, particularly for consumer apps that compete directly with established products.
  7. Check vendor and workplace rules. Confirm the applicable Figma terms, administrator AI settings, data policies, and internal requirements for AI-assisted work.

What the Figma incident actually proves

The strongest conclusion is narrower than “Figma copied Apple” and broader than “nothing went wrong.” A repeated Apple Weather-like result was a real quality warning. Figma responded by pausing the specific feature, removing problematic assets, and reviewing its QA process. The company denied direct training on Apple’s app and blamed its commissioned design-system inputs.

The episode shows that originality failures can enter an AI design product through curated components and examples, not only through opaque model-training data. It also shows why a feature can be useful for fast exploration while remaining unsuitable for unreviewed production output.
